From the New York Times: Why America’s Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis The answer to the disparity in death rates has everything to do with the lived experience of being a black woman in America. By LINDA VILLAROSA APRIL 11, 2018 When Simone Landrum felt tired and both nauseated and ravenous...

Infant and maternal mortality rates in the US are scandalously high for a developed country. From talking to people who follow the statistics (mostly obstetric nurses), the bad outcomes seem to be correlated not so much with race as with poverty. While black people are more likely to be poor than white people, last time I checked there were still more poor white people than poor people black people in the US. And I presume that even if black women are more likely to be battered than white women, there are still more battered white women. So if people really care about American babies and mothers and want to improve their lives, then they should start by looking at the real causes of problems. But even then, solutions to the problems might be hard to come by.

Whenever I read something like this I’m reminded of a comment my girlfriend made one day after work. It seems like she had a 26-year old patient who was 5 months pregnant, had five kids spread out among a host of foster families, was HIV positive and addicted to heroin.

“Her reproductive license needs to be revoked!” said the girlfriend.

But it’s the big, bad US medical community responsible for her poor outcomes.

  • AJ says:

I’m astounded by the author’s implication that microaggressions (arguably a post Civil Rights Movement era phenomenon at most) are doing more harm to black babies than slavery did since they state that infant mortality rates were lower then. So we’re to believe that remarks like “If you work hard you can succeed” cause more stress than being a slave did? What did they need whips for then?

According to the article, two full term pregnancies also one still born and one on the way, all by age 23. Two male sexual partners mentioned, maybe more. A boy friend (surprised they didn't refer to him as her fiance') who uses her as a MMA sparring partner and somehow, Joe in Buffalo is partially responsible for her health problems. Is she obese ? Does she smoke, drink alcohol and abuse drugs while pregnant ? Headaches and sensitivity to light? Try not letting your BF use your head as a speed bag. The optimum word missing in all these stories is responsibility.

    Say it ain’t so, Joe.

    Po thang.
Knocked up … knocked down ….now

    “the real causes of problems.”

It appears that the cause of the problems is pre natal trauma. This trauma could be due to stress brought on by emotional reactions to the enviornment, the vital experiences of black bodies in America. But is most likely due to medically defined trauma which is often administered to pre natal black bodies, in America. Again, the vital experiences of black bodies. You just don’t understand.

You do know the difference between pregnancy and childbirth and ricketts don’t you?

That’s the UK, not the USA. And yes, tickets was eradicated in the US long ago with Vitamin D added to baby formula milk and other foods decades ago.

There are other diseases caused by vitamin D deficiencies. A common one among older N Europeans and N Asians is osteoporosis.

The article is about childbirth problems amongst American black women, not about tickets in new immigrants to the UK.

As a nurse I can tell you that vitamin D deficiency has nothing to do with problems in pregnancy, childbirth or infant diseases.

Do you even know what rickets is? Or are you just putting bits of information together?

    Hmmm? https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20100504/high-doses-of-vitamin-d-may-cut-pregnancy-risk

It is generally accepted that light skin is better at using sunlight to produce vitamin D. I don’t see any reason why white people would be more likely to be deficient than black people – or any evidence that this is the case.

Mohammed is relatively recent. English Irish and others were in bondage long before Mohammad. Get your dates right.

    “Mohammed is relatively recent. “

    What, 700 AD?

There’s little evidence of slavery in pre-Islamic Africa (Egypt excepted, slavery back to the Pharaohs), but then they didn’t write history books so we just don’t know much about anything from that time. Slavery seems to have been present to a greater or lesser extent in all farming societies, so what evidence is there to assume African absence?

By the time people who did write history books turned up, the West Africans were definitely enslaving each other, and East Africans had been being enslaved by Muslims for centuries.

    http://local.droit.ulg.ac.be/sa/rida/file/2011/10.Korporowicz.pdf

“Slavery was a common social institution in antiquity. All ancient civilizations recognised a group of people whose rights were severely limited by law or custom. When the Romans arrived in Britain in 43 A.D. slavery was already known among the native (Celtic) inhabitants of the island. Celtic slavery differed from Roman slavery. It is hard to determine, however, to what extent slavery was a common institution in Celtic society. “

Yeah, I knew i was being a bit unfair when I wrote that. I recall a movie that Joe wrote (and possibly directed) that starred Kevin Bacon as a charismatic radio DJ who had taken a young protege under his wing. The film was semi-autobiographical as the protege was meant to be the young Joe Eszterhas. As I recall, the film received stellar reviews, but less than stellar box office receipts.

Telling Lies in America (1997). The young-Eszterhas character was played by the late Brad Renfro, who also starred in Bully (2001).

... to be clear, sub-Saharan Africa. I mean, I think Scipio had heard of Africa.

Obviously Scipio Africanus had heard of Africa. He went there in the Second Punic War to fight at Zama. You meant that Scipio didn’t you or did you mean Scipio Aemilianus of the Third Punic War. We want to be clear don’t we?

"The irony is that blacks have experienced less slavery than almost any other people."

Not really. The Muslim slave trade had been in existence, with big slave markets at Marrakesh and Cairo, for centuries before Westerners sailed the African coast. And when Westerners found West Africa they found that Africans themselves were big on slavery.

    What, 700 AD?

There's little evidence of slavery in pre-Islamic Africa (Egypt excepted, slavery back to the Pharaohs), but then they didn't write history books so we just don't know much about anything from that time. Slavery seems to have been present to a greater or lesser extent in all farming societies, so what evidence is there to assume African absence?

By the time people who did write history books turned up, the West Africans were definitely enslaving each other, and East Africans had been being enslaved by Muslims for centuries.

"Slavery was a common social institution in antiquity. "

    good point.

Mestizo hispanics actually have lower infant mortality than non-hispanic whites....When you exclude the black hispanics and Puerto Ricans it demonstrates that hispanics from mesoamerica have infant mortality of 4.9 verse 5.1 for white Americans.

The Hispanic paradox, also known as the "epidemiologic paradox," refers to the epidemiological finding that Hispanic and Latino Americans tend to have health outcomes that "paradoxically" are comparable to, or better than, those of their U.S. non-Hispanic White counterparts, even though Hispanics have lower incomes and education.

One hypothesis for the Hispanic Paradox proposes that living in the same neighborhood as people with similar ethnic backgrounds confers significant advantages to one’s health....In a study of elderly Mexican-Americans, those living in areas with a higher percentage of Mexican-Americans had lower seven-year mortality as well as a decreased prevalence of medical conditions, including stroke, cancer, and hip fracture. Despite these neighborhoods' relatively high rates of poverty due to lack of formal education, residents do not suffer from the same mortality and morbidity levels seen in similarly disadvantaged socioeconomic neighborhoods. Social network support structures are especially important to the health of the elderly population as they deal with declining physical function. Another reason for this phenomenon could be that those Hispanic-Americans that live among those of similar cultural and social backgrounds are shielded from some of the negative effects of assimilation to American culture.

For some reasons, Evans hasn't been MeTood yet.

Yes, that is an interesting question. In addition to being a well-known debaucher, Evans is also a convicted cokehead. (He’s 87 now, going on 88.)

In his autobiography, he claimed that Sharon Stone used to spread rumors about him:

    http://ew.com/article/1994/08/19/robert-evans-drops-names/

Evans says that the femme fatale of Sliver told others this damning story: that a friend of hers had been held prisoner at his house for more than three years and forced to wear a dog collar. In The Kid, Evans offers Stone $250,000 to produce any proof that the incident took place. ”If you can’t, down on your knees you go — only to apologize, I wouldn’t want anything more!” Stone’s publicist did not respond.

A few more excerpts about Evans from Joe Eszterhas’ book Hollywood Animal. Again, these are from his wife Naomi*’s diary.

    February 25, 1992

Every few months at Evans’s house there appears a new “honeybee,” a term I use to describe a very young, pretty girl flitting around. Evans will soon start to talk about how “important” she is to him and how he couldn’t have imagined life before she came along, and she then becomes the “Queen Bee.” Sometimes Helmut Newton even takes nude pictures of her.

She then is the “lady of the house” and attends all functions with Bob, helps with dinner parties, decorates the tree (depending on the time of year) and becomes a permanent fixture. Before long, a new honeybee appears.

The Queen Bee accepts cohabilitation with this new beauty, a little wary but still thinking her position is sound.

Suddenly the Queen Bee is gone, the new honeybee assumes her role, and the cycle starts again. It never fails. Anytime I go up I can usually spot the new one.

One time Margaux Hemingway became the Queen Bee (she never entered as a honeybee, she just swooped in as Queen). Bob even redecorated the guest bedroom for her. But then, alas, a honeybee buzzed in one day (I think her name was Brandy).

Bob was frantic. He said to Bill, “I just don’t know how to get rid of Margaux…” Then he had a brainstorm. He sent her to New York to have all her teeth done. He was very pleased with this bit of ingenuity.

She left for New York happy and starry-eyed, her cozy guest room awaiting her return. I never saw Margaux again.

    March 12, 1992

He is meeting every day with Charles Michener, the ghostwriter of his autobiography. Michener is a Princeton grad and a historian and Bob hadn’t read a word he’d written before he hired him. He hired him because he was told that Michener was “a hot ghostwriter.”

When Bob read what Michener had written, he called Bill in and said, “What is it with this guy? He writes like some stuffy Harvard graduate.”

    Bill said, “Princeton, Bob.”

Bob said, “Well, I told him that when I was sixteen, I used to hang out in bars in Harlem because the waitresses there could pick tips off the table with their c***s. He changed it! He uses the word ‘vagina’ all the time. I’ve never used that word in my life. Now I’ve got to go back and change all of Michener’s vaginas to my c***s.”

    June 6, 1992

When Bill arrived in the morning to pick him up for work, Bob was meeting some “potential investors.” Apparently they are also very religious.

They suggested that perhaps it would be good to pray for guidance. So there is Evans (in his slippers) kneeling with his head bowed in the living room with these holy rollers.

As they pray, two bimbos come out of Bob’s bedroom and go tiptoeing past behind them. One is wearing only a pajama top, the other only the bottoms.

They hold their fingers to their lips and stifle giggles as they pass by Bill. They get a glass of juice from the kitchen and go tiptoeing back, as God is invoked by the investors.

*Keep in mind that Naomi is his *second* wife. When they met on the set of Sliver, she was still married to her first husband (Hollywood producer Bill MacDonald) and he was still married to his first wife Gerri. (At the time, Gerri considered Naomi a good friend.)

The sequence of events: Sliver star Sharon Stone, who had been sleeping with Evans, dumped him for MacDonald. Naomi turned to the Eszterhases for support. In short order, Joe Eszterhas dumped Gerri for Naomi. In divorce court, Gerri took Joe for everything he owned. Naomi then married Joe, who went on to write such flicks as Showgirls and Jade.

For the main character in Showgirls, produced by Bob Evans’ brother Charlie, Joe came up with the name Nomi Malone. Nomi was played (badly but memorably) by Elizabeth Berkley, then best known for her stint on Saved by the Bell. (Upon meeting her, Eszterhas described Berkley as a “blow-up f*** doll.”) She was hired after Charlie auditioned her in his New York hotel room.

Jade, directed by William Friedkin, was one of two movies that David Caruso made in the wake of his heavily-publicized departure from NYPD Blue. After both movies flopped horrendously, the much-hyped Caruso’s career crashed and burned. It remained all but dead until CSI: Miami premiered several years later.

George Clooney later cited Caruso’s misfortunes as his main reason for staying on ER for several years even after he achieved breakout stardom.

(Incidentally, Eszterhas claims that Friedkin completely rewrote his script.)

"Black population come out with similar theories of vague and invisible forces that are oppressing people, like ‘institutional racism’ and ‘white privilege’.”

This brings to mind something I've wondered about for a long time, yet seems to have never occured to anyone else.

The KKK after the Civil War wore those white sheets and the hoods, which now appears to just be its own thing - insofar as the KKK actually exists now.

    But from a wiki entry:

"The traditional story related to the creation of the Klan uniform is that the whites of the time observed the religions and beliefs of the Negros, including Santeria and Voodoo. From these systems they surmised that the Negros were obsessed with spirits, and the dead. From this came the original "ghost" costume, designed to terrorize the "superstitious" blacks. Most of the evidence for this is oral, however, so it is difficult to ascertain how much of this is apocryphal."

Wearing white sheets in a night attack is pretty dumb. Concealing your identity is pretty smart, but most robbers and n'er do wells don't wear anything like this.

So my take is, that it [email protected]#$ING worked, ie instilled superstitious terror in the targets.

It has no importance at this point in time, but I have literally never seen any discussion or the slightest hint that post Civil War blacks actually believed these were ghosts or "Haints."

But if I were involved in this whole thing, no way I'd wear that outfit if it didn't work.

Before Wikipedia, the print encyclopedias and standard histories of the KKK claimed that one of the post civil war founders had traveled in Spain.

There he saw the Holy Week before Easter services and processions. Worshippers wore pointed White hats and White robes. The outfit was supposed to be a continuation of the outfits medieval pilgrims wore.

That was the standard story 19th early 20th century. Maybe the story was changed to avoid associating Hispanics with the KKK?

In the UK rickets was eradicated UNTIL black and Asian people arrived.

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/rickets-and-osteomalacia/

"Rickets was common in the past, but it mostly disappeared in the western world during the early 20th century after foods like margarine and cereal were fortified with vitamin D.

However, in recent years, there's been an increase in cases of rickets in the UK. The number of rickets cases is still relatively small – less than 700 cases were diagnosed in hospitals in England in 2013-14 – but studies have shown a significant number of people in the UK have low levels of vitamin D in their blood.

Any child whose diet doesn't contain enough vitamin D or calcium can develop rickets, but the condition is more common in children with dark skin, as this means they need more sunlight to get enough vitamin D"

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/#supplement

"The Department of Health recommends that you take a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D throughout the year if you:

aren't often outdoors – for example, if you're frail or housebound

are in an institution like a care home

usually wear clothes that cover up most of your skin when outdoors
(now who might that apply to, I wonder?)
People with dark skin from African, African-Caribbean and south Asian backgrounds may also not get enough vitamin D from sunlight. They should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D throughout the year."

Is there any relationship between a woman's estrogen/testosterone levels and her probability of having pregnancy complications? I have no idea, I'm just suggesting that.

When I saw the headlines about Serena Williams problems with childbirth I wondered about that.

1 She’s a bit old for a first baby to be easy.

2 Childbirth happens because of a surge of a certain hormone when the time comes. If she’s been taking testosterone all these years that might have affected the birth process.

Actually, his books about Hollywood are very illuminating, if you can look past his boilerplate leftism. They give you a glimpse into the dysfunction and depravity so prevalent in the "dream factory."

These are excerpts from Eszterhas' wife's diary:

    April 4, 1990

It seems Lotto has reached somewhere near $70 million. [Producer Bob] Evans, who is desperate for cash, has decided Lotto might save him. He bought hundreds of tickets hoping that some miracle would bail him out of the debt that keeps growing.

When we entered the screening room last night, there on the large round table were hundreds and hundreds of Lotto tickets. Daphne and several other visiting bimbos were gathered around the table reading off the numbers. (Daphne is Evans's latest fixture at the house. She told me they met in St. Tropez on the beach when he admired her tattoo.) Even Darryl the tennis pro, dressed in his whites with his racket leaning against his chair, had come in off the court to lend a hand. It sounded like one of those telemarketing calls with the hum of voices droning in the room.

"Can you f***ing believe this?!" Evans was shouting and pacing around the screening room. "Not one f***ing winning number in the bunch! I'm the unluckiest Jew that ever lived!" He was nearly spitting, waving his glasses around and screaming at the bimbos not to mix up the ones that had been rechecked with the ones that had been re-rechecked.

    On a somewhat creepier note:

    May 4, 1989

Over the weekend we went up to Bob's. I haven't been there for a while. There's a new girl at the house named Bridget. She is beautiful but looks about fifteen years old.

When we arrived, she answered the door sweetly. She was wearing a tiny black maid's outfit with a little ruffled white slip and white panties peeking out from underneath. It had a tiny white apron and she wore a white cap.

I said, "Oh, you should wear that at Halloween."

She looked at me sort of blankly.

As we headed to the screening room, Bill whispered to me, "She wears that every day--Bob likes her in it!"

    And:

    February 24, 1992

Evans was screaming at everyone in the office on Friday because he was trying to dictate a congratulatory letter to Jack Nicholson, who recently had another child. The letter made reference to the penis size of the baby.

A sheriff's deputy was at Bob's house inquiring about an unpaid florist bill. Bob thinks it was really the IRS taking a peek around at the furniture.

As a nurse I can tell you that vitamin D deficiency has nothing to do with problems in pregnancy, childbirth or infant diseases.

such as blacks living in a “food desert” because they have to walk more than two blocks to a grocery store.

Turns out burning down the neighborhood has negative consequences.

Off-topic, sort of: a number of summers ago I had a pilot job giving sight-seeing rides and towing advertising banners at the beach. NPR's All Things Considered was doing a profile of summer jobs at the beach and wanted to meet with us as well as some lifeguards, bartenders, etc.

Pilots, even those with bottom of the ladder flying jobs, tend to be a conservative bunch. We decided to fight NPR's fire with fire and tell them as many lies as we could, and to make them increasingly absurd and see if the reporters would ever bat an eye.

We started out by claiming that a French guy that worked with us was a "freedom fighter" from Quebec down in the states "training" and raising funds but to please not tell anyone. Our French buddy had never heard of NPR but went along with it, nodding and looking furtively about for "intelligence agents".

We said that because of the "death-defying" nature of our jobs, we ate and drank for free at every bar and restaurant in town and if we went to a night club, the DJ's would stop the music and inform the others of the celebrities among them.

We told them that from the air we frequently would see White sharks, Orcas, and even giant squid cavorting among the oblivious swimmers.

We even told them that it was very important to frequently alternate which fuel tank was being used (fuel tanks are typically in the wings) because if one wing got even a few pounds heavier than the other, the airplane would spiral uncontrollably into the ocean.

It was several weeks before the segment aired (and presumably with plenty of time to verify some of our whoppers) yet all but one of our absurdities was included: they covered for the Quebec freedom fighter, as we requested.

“such as blacks living in a “food desert” because they have to walk more than two blocks to a grocery store”

Nationally, the figure is currently about 10:1 and has been slowly declining over the past decade: https://www.cdc.gov/std/stats16/figures/s.htm

    Re: The Legacy of Slavery
Canada has little to no history of black slavery, but substitutes have been invented to focus white guilt and effect wealth transfers.
Canada has many aboriginals. To lift them out of the stone age, a generation or two were sent to boarding school in the mid 20th century.
It is now a P.C. article of faith that the 'Legacy of the Residential Schools' is the reason for current rates of alcoholism, incarceration, family dysfunction, child abuse, underachievment and poor diet .
The Residential Schools were closed around the 1970's, but the phantom legacy will be peddled forever to leverage reparations. Sound familiar?

And what is amazing is that it was the progressives of the age who insisted on the civilizing mission, on separating parents from children and sending them to schools. Not just Canada, but Australia also has a concept of “stolen generations”. Let’s not forget eugenics. Even the proselytizing fervor of Europeans in their expanding empires may be put down to a progressivist strain. Years later, it is converted by the new progressives into the sin of the legacy majority. I wonder which of today’s articles of faith will become our collective sins in the future and fuel for more progressive tut-tutting. My money is on indulging transgender fantasies, especially when it comes to mutilating children.

Bob said, "Well, I told him that when I was sixteen, I used to hang out in bars in Harlem because the waitresses there could pick tips off the table with their c***s. He changed it! He uses the word 'vagina' all the time. I've never used that word in my life. Now I've got to go back and change all of Michener's vaginas to my c***s."

    June 6, 1992

When Bill arrived in the morning to pick him up for work, Bob was meeting some "potential investors." Apparently they are also very religious.

They suggested that perhaps it would be good to pray for guidance. So there is Evans (in his slippers) kneeling with his head bowed in the living room with these holy rollers.

As they pray, two bimbos come out of Bob's bedroom and go tiptoeing past behind them.

For the main character in Showgirls, produced by Bob Evans' brother Charlie, Joe came up with the name Nomi Malone. Nomi was played (badly but memorably) by Elizabeth Berkley, then best known for her stint on Saved by the Bell. (Upon meeting her, Eszterhas described Berkley as a "blow-up f*** doll.") She was hired after Charlie auditioned her in his New York hotel room.

Jade, directed by William Friedkin, was one of two movies that David Caruso made in the wake of his heavily-publicized departure from NYPD Blue. After both movies flopped horrendously, the much-hyped Caruso's career crashed and burned. It remained all but dead until CSI: Miami premiered several years later.

George Clooney later cited Caruso's misfortunes as his main reason for staying on ER for several years even after he achieved breakout stardom.

(Incidentally, Eszterhas claims that Friedkin completely rewrote his script.)

Given his , ummmm, creative output, it's a shame those 'benign polyps' weren't wrapped around his typing fingers.

Actually, his books about Hollywood are very illuminating, if you can look past his boilerplate leftism. They give you a glimpse into the dysfunction and depravity so prevalent in the “dream factory.”

These are excerpts from Eszterhas’ wife’s diary:

    April 4, 1990

It seems Lotto has reached somewhere near $70 million. [Producer Bob] Evans, who is desperate for cash, has decided Lotto might save him. He bought hundreds of tickets hoping that some miracle would bail him out of the debt that keeps growing.

When we entered the screening room last night, there on the large round table were hundreds and hundreds of Lotto tickets. Daphne and several other visiting bimbos were gathered around the table reading off the numbers. (Daphne is Evans’s latest fixture at the house.

“Can you f***ing believe this?!” Evans was shouting and pacing around the screening room. “Not one f***ing winning number in the bunch! I’m the unluckiest Jew that ever lived!” He was nearly spitting, waving his glasses around and screaming at the bimbos not to mix up the ones that had been rechecked with the ones that had been re-rechecked.

    On a somewhat creepier note:

    May 4, 1989

Over the weekend we went up to Bob’s. I haven’t been there for a while. There’s a new girl at the house named Bridget. She is beautiful but looks about fifteen years old.

When we arrived, she answered the door sweetly. She was wearing a tiny black maid’s outfit with a little ruffled white slip and white panties peeking out from underneath. It had a tiny white apron and she wore a white cap.

I said, “Oh, you should wear that at Halloween.”

She looked at me sort of blankly.

As we headed to the screening room, Bill whispered to me, “She wears that every day–Bob likes her in it!”

    And:

    February 24, 1992

Evans was screaming at everyone in the office on Friday because he was trying to dictate a congratulatory letter to Jack Nicholson, who recently had another child. The letter made reference to the penis size of the baby.

A sheriff’s deputy was at Bob’s house inquiring about an unpaid florist bill. Bob thinks it was really the IRS taking a peek around at the furniture.

The irony is that blacks have experienced less slavery than almost any other people.

There have been cases of hunter gatherers taking slaves but not many. Chattel slavery is largely a result of the Neolithic Revolution invention of agriculture. So slavery came in about 8,000 BC in the fertile crescent. Those people were Caucasians. Black Africa got agriculture considerably later.

By the 17th century there wasn't much slavery anywhere because traditional slave populations like the Germans and the Slavs had thrown off their masters. They had achieved military competence.

Africans were too weak and primitive to resist the slave raiders, so after the 15th Century they became exploited as slaves the way Europeans, Asians and the Middle East peoples had been for thousands of year earlier.

“The irony is that blacks have experienced less slavery than almost any other people.”

Not really. The Muslim slave trade had been in existence, with big slave markets at Marrakesh and Cairo, for centuries before Westerners sailed the African coast. And when Westerners found West Africa they found that Africans themselves were big on slavery.

Vitamin D deficiency has absolutely nothing to do with pregnancy, childbirth, infant and childhood deaths.

The races most affected by vitamin D deficiencies are Whites descended from N Europeans and Asians

100 years ago black children were sometimes affected by rickets, a vitamin D deficiency bone disease. But that disease was long ago eradicated by baby formula, milk and other food products enriched with vitamin D.

In the UK rickets was eradicated UNTIL black and Asian people arrived.

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/rickets-and-osteomalacia/

“Rickets was common in the past, but it mostly disappeared in the western world during the early 20th century after foods like margarine and cereal were fortified with vitamin D.

However, in recent years, there’s been an increase in cases of rickets in the UK. The number of rickets cases is still relatively small – less than 700 cases were diagnosed in hospitals in England in 2013-14 – but studies have shown a significant number of people in the UK have low levels of vitamin D in their blood.

Any child whose diet doesn’t contain enough vitamin D or calcium can develop rickets, but the condition is more common in children with dark skin, as this means they need more sunlight to get enough vitamin D”

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/#supplement

“The Department of Health recommends that you take a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D throughout the year if you:

aren’t often outdoors – for example, if you’re frail or housebound

are in an institution like a care home

usually wear clothes that cover up most of your skin when outdoors
(now who might that apply to, I wonder?)
People with dark skin from African, African-Caribbean and south Asian backgrounds may also not get enough vitamin D from sunlight. They should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D throughout the year.”

I occasionally listen to Washington DC-based NPR "talk radio". There was a piece the other day from a woman identified as a "race and ethnicity reporter" ... someone I imagine who is responsible for keeping track of all the racist things (omissions and commisions) that whites are doing to blacks in the Washington DC community.

    Incredible!

The whining covered all of the usual topics such as blacks living in a "food desert" because they have to walk more than two blocks to a grocery store. Then, the whining moved on to the lack of decent medical care in the black community. When the moderator pointed out that this was not true (lots of new free neighborhood clinics opening), the moderator and the "race and ethnicity reporter" agreed that real reason for declining health care was that blacks were not aware that the free clinics existed. Simple logic: If you don't know they exist, you don't go to them.

The transition to "white racism" was easy. Someone had failed to develop a program to properly inform the black community where the free clinics were located ... so it "appeared" that there was a dire lack of medical care in the black community, including, of course, medical care for pregnant black women.

The governing assumption in this discussion was that blacks lack agency and control over their lives. Someone is responsible for providing "services" to black communities to close disparate gaps with neighboring white communities. When problems arise in the black community, clearly those responsible for providing these "services" are not doing their job, even when the problems are attributable to blacks being unaware the "services" exist.

Shouldn't this be called a "plantation" mentality ... waiting and watching for the "MAsTuh" to take care of you and complaining when he doesn't?

such as blacks living in a “food desert” because they have to walk more than two blocks to a grocery store.

Turns out burning down the neighborhood has negative consequences.

Off-topic, sort of: a number of summers ago I had a pilot job giving sight-seeing rides and towing advertising banners at the beach. NPR’s All Things Considered was doing a profile of summer jobs at the beach and wanted to meet with us as well as some lifeguards, bartenders, etc.

Pilots, even those with bottom of the ladder flying jobs, tend to be a conservative bunch. We decided to fight NPR’s fire with fire and tell them as many lies as we could, and to make them increasingly absurd and see if the reporters would ever bat an eye.

We started out by claiming that a French guy that worked with us was a “freedom fighter” from Quebec down in the states “training” and raising funds but to please not tell anyone. Our French buddy had never heard of NPR but went along with it, nodding and looking furtively about for “intelligence agents”.

We said that because of the “death-defying” nature of our jobs, we ate and drank for free at every bar and restaurant in town and if we went to a night club, the DJ’s would stop the music and inform the others of the celebrities among them.

I prefer a different rhetorical device. Instead of blaming [current day] "racism" or "microaggressions", I blame "The Legacy of Slavery".

All blacks suffer from The Legacy of Slavery (it really isn't their fault!). They have suffered from it for hundreds of years. And sometimes it makes them do crazy, violent unpredictable things, right out of the blue, like shoot up their workplace, or engage in a school yard beat down, or shoot someone for looking at them funny, or shake their girlfriend's screaming baby until they break its neck. But, again, it really isn't their fault. They are the true victims.

They are like a pit bull that has been brutalized by a previous owner. It really cannot help itself, so you can't blame it. Just be careful not to get too close, or make sudden movements, or show your teeth, or turn your back. You never know how it will react.

If someone accuses you of racism, tell them you aren't racist, you are just careful due to The Legacy of Slavery.

  • They’re so fixated on racism that they are missing a very simple explanation for the higher infant mortality among black Americans – the very high rates of vitamin D deficiency among that population. Occam’s razor, if we’re still allowed to use it, suggests that it’s more likely to be the cause than microaggressions.

Unfortunately, it seems that they’re willing to sacrifice black children if they can use them to summon a weapon to attack white people with.

  • Black infants in America are now more than twice as likely to die as white infants — 11.3 per 1,000 black babies, compared with 4.9 per 1,000 white babies, according to the most recent government data — a racial disparity that is actually wider than in 1850, 15 years before the end of slavery, when most black women were considered chattel.

Meaning, the black infant mortality rate and the white infant mortality rate have both dropped since 1865, but the White rate has gone a bit too low.

This is actually a very serious charge that the NYT is making, they are basically saying Whites are responsible (at least partly) for the death of Black babies. This could have serious repercussions on the group they are vilifying.

Black infants in America are now more than twice as likely to die as white infants — 11.3 per 1,000 black babies, compared with 4.9 per 1,000 white babies, according to the most recent government data

What about other races? It would seem that going by the table in the link that Whites and Hispanics have a similar Infant mortality rate and Asians have the lowest rate. Now what could possibly motivate Linda Villarosa from omitting those groups?

    https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/infant-mortality-rate-by-race-ethnicity/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D

NYT articles like this, it’s hard to tell how much the story line is due to the author’s and editors’ race-driven animus, versus what’s due to laziness and innumeracy.

In 1850… the reported black infant-mortality rate [in the US] was 340 per 1,000; the white rate was 217 per 1,000… Black infants in America are now more than twice as likely to die as white infants — 11.3 per 1,000 black babies, compared with 4.9 per 1,000 white babies, according to the most recent government data — a racial disparity that is actually wider than in 1850, 15 years before the end of slavery, when most black women were considered chattel.

Expressing numbers as the percentage of newborns dying before their first birthday, and adding in life expectancy at birth:

    1850 — I.M. 21.7% white cf. 35.0% black. L.E. 38.3 yr white cf. 23.0 yr black
    1900 — I.M. 11.1% white cf. 17.0% black.  L.E. 51.8 yr white cf. 41.8 yr black
    2015 — I.M. 00.4% white cf. 01.1% black. L.E. 78.8 yr white cf. 75.2 yr black

Obviously, in 1850 and 1900, the influence of infant mortality on life expectancy at birth was enormous. Drop the 2015 I.M. rates to zero, and the life expectancy numbers will hardly budge.

As other have noted, CDC figures show that Asian/Pacific Islanders and non-black Hispanics do better than whites in both categories. Makes sense — the whites I know who work in healthcare are all hard-core racists, but they focus their powerful hate-rays exclusively on blacks. For the moment. [edit: /sarc]

Hey, Ms. Villarosa — bet you wish you were living the White Privilege life of 1850 or 1900, instead of suffering as a latter-day Woman of Color.

Actually the full article goes on to discuss a number of scientific research studies into infant mortality.

The study, conducted by four researchers at the C.D.C. — Kenneth Schoendorf, Carol Hogue, Joel Kleinman and Diane Rowley — mined a database of close to a million previously unavailable linked birth and death certificates and found that infants born to college-educated black parents were twice as likely to die as infants born to similarly educated white parents. In 72 percent of the cases, low birth weight was to blame.

Interestingly women from Africa and the Caribbean are delivering on average higher weight babies than women of African descent in the US--babies equal in weight to those of white women in the US. For example, women who were born overseas are delivering babies in the US that weigh less than their mother did at her own birth twenty odd years ago outside the US. Rather odd.

My own personal opinion, for what it is worth, is that there IS something very toxic to blacks in US culture, and particularly in black US culture, which seems to be surprisingly uniform in view of the vast geographical diversity of the black population in the US.

I have a friend in Florida who is an African guy born in Sierra Leone and who moved to London with his family as a child, and then came to the US as an adult. He seems indistinguishable in intelligence, speech, vocabulary, attitude and so on from other Londoners and quite different from local Florida blacks.

I also have a female friend (work acquaintance) in Florida who is of Asian Indian (Hindoo) descent and was born, like me, in London, and she also seems indistinguishable, except in external appearance, from other Londoners.

And yet blacks from New York do not seem to be culturally typical Noo Yockers. Why is this?

I don't really know what the toxic element is. It could be related to fast foodpoor diet, and excessive TV viewership, but I don't know. I have been in hundreds of black homes in my area on work-related activity. What one notices, other than many families are very poor, is a widespread lack of interest in cultural activities and a general deference to commercial culture, a complete lack of interest in visual or decorative arts or home improvement activities, automobiles owned that are more expensive than one would expect for the economic level, and a tendency to keep homes completely dark in the daytime. US blacks are family oriented, and tend to live close to a lot of blood relatives. They have large family reunions in the summer and most leisure activity revolves around family members.

There is very little interest in history, including Black History. Few know anything about Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong, or about Parchman Farm.

Of course these points do not apply to all.

“surprisingly uniform in view of the vast geographical diversity . . . He seems indistinguishable in intelligence, speech, vocabulary, attitude and so on from other Londoners and quite different from local Florida blacks.”

IKAGO. Blacks in London pretty much cause the same problems as blacks here. Or almost anywhere for that matter. Uniform indeed. It isn’t primarily cultural, it’s biological – a large percentage of their population has low I.Q.s, think 12 year-olds with guns, crack, booze, sex, cars, and the right to vote. What could possibly go wrong?

You'd have to compare African-American women's pregnancies to All The Rest. There was some mention of this in the article but as I recall nothing conclusive and I can't be bothered to re-read the article.

BTW it was from that article that I came up with the PubMed article that indicates that blacks are less likely to be prescribed pain meds, due to, well, you know. (Perhaps this is a tiny factor in the opioid epidemic?)

Zero mention of the extremely low Hispanic IM rate. I guess that would have forced the writers to do some thinkin' and that's always a problem.

My own guess, and it's just a guess, is that African-Americans really are under a lot of stress, and that creates pregnancy problems. (And Hispanics are a low-stress people, which is good for Mami.) But the stress is as much self-created as it is a reaction to the outside world and its stressors.

It's funny - Hollywood and pop culture would have you believe that being a black American is the greatest thing ever except for the constant macro and micro-aggressions of Wypeepo. But inside "The Community" it's a warm, wonderful bath of self-acceptance and You Go Girl.

    I have my doubts.

My own guess, and it’s just a guess, is that African-Americans really are under a lot of stress, and that creates pregnancy problems. (And Hispanics are a low-stress people, which is good for Mami.) But the stress is as much self-created as it is a reaction to the outside world and its stressors.

Living the Whurrrlll Star urban lifestyle is exciting, but probably generates excessive stress.

And just imagine the stress inherent in having three or more baby daddies, each with their own urban nonsense going on, without getting much in the way of support from any of them.

The KKK white robe costume, including the pointed hood, resembles some Spanish Christian traditions that date back hundreds of years. I don’t know if the early Klan leaders got the idea from the Spaniards.

It’s always been my opinion that the good health of Hispanics is because they are survivors of slaves of the Aztecs and Mayans serfs of the Spanish and bad treatment by the Hispanic elites.

The weak died off. The strongest survived and came to America.

The good health of Hispanic infants and children can be explained by the crowded housing and extended family arrangements. In other words, there is always an adult or responsible teen ager around to see that the little ones don’t hurt themselves.

Black mothers are notorious for leaving little ones alone or in charge of a 7 year old. So they get injured. Ask anyone who ever worked in an ER or investigated child abuse and neglect.

Three months into her pregnancy, he became angry at her for wanting to hang out with friends and threw her to the ground outside their apartment.

Reading between the lines a bit: She was three months pregnant, sick, but still going out partying with her gal pals. Her baby-daddy gets a bit patriarchal (it's his kid, too) and tells her she can't go getting drunk and smoking dope with her friends. Being an opinionated, strong minded woman, she tells him to fsck-off and asks him why he's so damn sure its his baby anyway. He grabs her arm as she pushes past him to leave and she loses her footing and trips on the front step.

Whenever feminists tell their lurid victim stories to sympathetic feminist anti-racists/anti-whites I always wonder what they are leaving out--particularly when there are no photos, police reports, eye witnesses or videos.

The “friends” were probably other men. Just going by criminal assault and battery statistics the boy friend probably did beat her up.

In a "large part"? Really? If the "parts" were qualified, show the numbers. But that statement is a ridiculous opinion masquerading as scientific evidence. Racism and racial bias in the healthcare system is mythical.

A much more likely culprit for poorer pregnancy outcomes for black women is obesity. The stresses of pregnancy combined with the morbid obesity of many black women would naturally produce deleterious effects. That would be the literal and figurative "large part" missing from the analysis.

If the pregnancies were close together, there was no time to recover between them. Her health has probably been sub-par for years, compared to women from the same demographic who made different choices.

She also claimed she went back to the boyfriend because she couldn’t make enough to support herself and her kids; ironically, she could get benefits to cover herself and all her children, but she’d have to quit her job–and ditch the boyfriend. I wonder which she would find more onerous?

Will this crazy shit ever end? Unbelievable piece of insanity from another sick black lesbian. What she didn't mention in her Black Moron Nation article is that many black women are unbelievably fat which raises the risk of diabetes and hypertension and causes all types problems in pregnancy. Furthermore, black women have extremely high rates of STDs. Bacterial vaginosis, gonorrhea and other STDs increase the risk of premature labor and premature rupture of membranes and similar problems. Many black women have no idea how to act when pregnant. They drink, smoke and still want to party exposing their unborn to a host of toxins and more sexual diseases. Black women typically have the highest rates of vaginal problems including cervical cancer, caused by the sexually transmitted HPV.

And something that will not be mentioned in medical journals blacks seem to be predisposed to certain diseases caused by certain environmental conditions when combined with their life style. Evolution is a real bitch isn't it. Perhaps they should be more concerned about these things instead of tearing down statues. How many of your children did you save with your last history riot?

Friend who was a nurse in the local juvenile hall told me that virtually all the black teen age girls including the 12 and 13 year olds had STDs.

In the penultimate sentence, "like" should be "lie".

"... this young woman’s troubles are caused by the poor decision-making of herself and the men with whom she chooses to conceive babies."
Is she in fact choosing to conceive babies? It sounds more like she just can't be bothered to use contraception, so she's repeatedly impregnated due to her apparent lack of agency. Of course it's all the fault of the blue-eyed devil.

60 years after women began taking the birth control pill, many black women still believe it will harm them somehow.

    Evil Whitey juju you know.

For years in the 1970s I rented an apartment from a liberal Ivy League professor. He used to give me his copies of the New York Times when he was done with them. He once told me that people who were conservative weren't sufficiently well-informed, that they would be liberal if only they would read the New York Times. But it was reading articles like this in the copies he gave me that made me right wing.

I too became right wing because of reading all my parents lefty newspapers and magazines.

The more anti White crap I read, the more pro White I became.

Which indicates that about 6% of Americans will, at some point, die from medical errors.

"The article implied that even in the case of [Serena] Williams, who is undeniably famous, and incredibly rich, the medical care was allegedly not as good as it might have been, for example scant attention was paid to her past medical history of pulmonary embolism and I am sure she must have the best medical insurance that money can buy."

Being rich and famous didn't save the distinctly non-minority Joan Rivers from fatal medical incompetence. Going back further, medical incompetence was a contributing factor in the death of rich, famous, non-minority Andy Warhol.

I went to the weddings around 1990 of a couple of middle class black woman with college degrees and good jobs who went on to have pregnancy problems. They would have made far more sympathetic characters in this kind of article.

My assumption 25 years ago was that blacks tend to have more troubles with pregnancy than other races.

You’d have to compare African-American women’s pregnancies to All The Rest. There was some mention of this in the article but as I recall nothing conclusive and I can’t be bothered to re-read the article.

BTW it was from that article that I came up with the PubMed article that indicates that blacks are less likely to be prescribed pain meds, due to, well, you know. (Perhaps this is a tiny factor in the opioid epidemic?)

Zero mention of the extremely low Hispanic IM rate. I guess that would have forced the writers to do some thinkin’ and that’s always a problem.

My own guess, and it’s just a guess, is that African-Americans really are under a lot of stress, and that creates pregnancy problems. (And Hispanics are a low-stress people, which is good for Mami.) But the stress is as much self-created as it is a reaction to the outside world and its stressors.

It’s funny – Hollywood and pop culture would have you believe that being a black American is the greatest thing ever except for the constant macro and micro-aggressions of Wypeepo. But inside “The Community” it’s a warm, wonderful bath of self-acceptance and You Go Girl.

    I have my doubts.

Why is it always, always a binary analysis? blacks and whites! There’s millions of others in the mix: Indian (dot and redskin), Mexican, etc... I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Many many (South Asian)-Indians have skin every bit as dark as the average African-American yet they make more money per capita than the average WHITE. That proves that the theory of skin color deciding EVERY OUTCOME a priori (cited ad infinitum by SJWs) is utter codswallop.

    IT’S SMOKING

It’s all the factors that go into blacks’ lives being more chaotic and unhealthy.

I’ve related part of this before, but we had a large, black, welfare family move into our suburban neighborhood. (remember, suburbia is supposed to increase the future generations earnings!) and they were calling the police on each other constantly. Over 25 times in two years, according to the cop. The older sisters would fight, physically, in the street. One of them got pregnant and the other sister kicked her in the stomach and chased her down the street. The cops came for that one, but nobody went to jail. As a family, they ate like crap, drank, smoked cigs and pot and got very little exercise. It was so pathetic it was almost funny; fortunately they didn’t last on our street.

Based on an analysis of prior research, the Johns Hopkins study estimates that more than 250,000 Americans die each year from medical errors. On the CDC's official list, that would rank just behind heart disease and cancer, which each took about 600,000 lives in 2014, and in front of respiratory disease, which caused about 150,000 deaths.

Medical mistakes that can lead to death range from surgical complications that go unrecognized to mix-ups with the doses or types of medications patients receive.

One issue is that black women generally have narrower hips, or narrower passage between the hip bones for the baby to traverse during birth. What makes blacks superior runners makes them inferior child bearers. Ultimately this is because blacks have smaller heads, than Eurasians and a slightly shorter gestation. But–guessing–if you throw in some mixing of white DNA and allow for modern (white) medical care and modern American (white) nutrition you can have some issues with size.

Then there are all the pregnancies issues just associated with conscientiousness–from being overweight (to grotesquely obese) to proper nutrition to drugs and alcohol.

I remember reading a column by Pat Buchanan that made the point that if you compared various American racial groups to their originating countries (blacks to Africa, whites to Europe, Hispanics to Latin America) on academic performance, America did better than the rest of the world.

I haven’t seen that article but I’ve made a similar point:

If you don’t look at “America” but look at the performance of the individual ethnic groups in America, then contra all the leftist b.s. America does really well across income, education, life expectancy, etc. etc. For example Japanese women are the longest lived national/sex demographic. But–last i checked–Japanese American women just edged them out. Swedes in the US do a bit better in income/education/longevity than Swedes in Sweden. Irish do better than Irish in Ireland. Chinese do way better than Chinese in China. Indians do way way better than Indians in India. Mexicans way way better than Mexicans in Mexico.

And of course the absolute champs blacks in the US do way, way, way, way, way, way … way better than blacks in Africa.

Blacks are the people who really really benefit incredibly for being in America. American blacks are the great beneficiaries of slavery.

Henry Harpending’s observation that whereas in Africa a large fraction of all individual misfortunes or illnesses are blamed on “witchcraft,” in America “racism” serves much the same purpose…

This is a great observation, but I have never been able to track it down. Anyone have a URL or reference?

    A little google-fu, and:

“Among Herero there is no such thing as an accident, there is no such thing as a natural death, witchcraft in some form is behind all of it. Did you have a gastrointestinal upset this morning? Clearly someone slipped some pink potion in the milk. … Our [African] employees were so adamant to show me the truth that they pooled their money so they could take me to the local witch doctor, who would turn me into a frog. ‘Of course he can do that, it is easy for them to do, even to white people’ they said. … A colleague pointed out a few weeks ago, after hearing this story, that if it is nearly pan-African then perhaps some of it came to the New World. Prominent and not so prominent talkers from the American Black population come out with similar theories of vague and invisible forces that are oppressing people, like ‘institutional racism’ and ‘white privilege’.”
—“My friend the witch doctor,” West Hunter blog

“Black population come out with similar theories of vague and invisible forces that are oppressing people, like ‘institutional racism’ and ‘white privilege’.”

This brings to mind something I’ve wondered about for a long time, yet seems to have never occured to anyone else.

The KKK after the Civil War wore those white sheets and the hoods, which now appears to just be its own thing – insofar as the KKK actually exists now.

    But from a wiki entry:

“The traditional story related to the creation of the Klan uniform is that the whites of the time observed the religions and beliefs of the Negros, including Santeria and Voodoo. From these systems they surmised that the Negros were obsessed with spirits, and the dead. From this came the original “ghost” costume, designed to terrorize the “superstitious” blacks. Most of the evidence for this is oral, however, so it is difficult to ascertain how much of this is apocryphal.”

Wearing white sheets in a night attack is pretty dumb. Concealing your identity is pretty smart, but most robbers and n’er do wells don’t wear anything like this.

So my take is, that it [email protected]#$ING worked, ie instilled superstitious terror in the targets.

It has no importance at this point in time, but I have literally never seen any discussion or the slightest hint that post Civil War blacks actually believed these were ghosts or “Haints.”

But if I were involved in this whole thing, no way I’d wear that outfit if it didn’t work.

The KKK white robe costume, including the pointed hood, resembles some Spanish Christian traditions that date back hundreds of years. I don't know if the early Klan leaders got the idea from the Spaniards.
    , @Nurse
Before Wikipedia, the print encyclopedias and standard histories of the KKK claimed that one of the post civil war founders had traveled in Spain.

There he saw the Holy Week before Easter services and processions. Worshippers wore pointed White hats and White robes. The outfit was supposed to be a continuation of the outfits medieval pilgrims wore.

That was the standard story 19th early 20th century. Maybe the story was changed to avoid associating Hispanics with the KKK?

That may be the most impossibly long and unreadable screed the NYT has ever published.

Linda Villarosa directs the journalism program at the City College of New York, in Harlem, and is a contributing writer for the magazine. She last wrote a feature about the H.I.V. epidemic among American black gay and bisexual men.

Truly a source a sage wisdom that one is.

Crappy article. “Societal racism” “black babies dying”–no specifics. It says nothing about how we drain their babies blood to make our ketchup, grind up their soft tissues for our meatloaf, or crush their bones into the flour to bake our Wonder bread.

Only A or A+ students get into medical school.

Excepting quota cases. Thanks to affirmative action and the preferences of med school administrators, black doctors’ undergraduate GPAs range down to B- or lower.

Black doctors’ patients are disproportionately NAM.
