My reading speed depends on what I am reading. I “read” a 700 page technical book in about 3 hours because most of it was not what I was interested in. I made notes and then went back and read the interesting parts more slowly. I am not sure who wants 500 page books, but it is not me. I recently read three fairly good spy novels but they were all about 350 pages long, and the same story could have been told in about 200 pages. The only thing I can think of is that publishers think longer books justify higher prices. Elmore Leonard knew how to do it in 200 pages.
