Guns. In a country with more than 300 million of them, a country that’s recently been swept up in a round of protests over the endless killing sprees they permit, you’d think I might have had more experience with them. As it happens, I’ve held a gun only once in my life. I even fired...
  • If you think we’d have peace in the absence of nuclear weapons, you’re nuts. The only thing that kept the Cold War mostly cold was the fact that the decision makers in DC and Moscow would have died themselves, immediately, if they had dared to go to war. The fact that Russia is armed with nukes is probably the only thing keeping NATO from attacking them. We should all thank God that the thermonuclear bomb has made war intimate for people in power, because those people have no compunction sending other people to kill and die for them, when they have no skin in the game. They kill people all the time when they personally have nothing to lose. The bomb means they die too, which means millions upon millions of people have also been allowed to live. Thank God for it.

As for guns in the house, I grew up in rural Maine, and almost everybody has guns. In the eighties and early nineties kids came to school with rifles and shotguns in our cars; we would go hunting after school. Kids come to school on 4 wheelers and snowmachines, too, it is that type of place. We used rifles and shotguns all the time; my family stored them in the basement unlocked with their shells.

I no longer live there, but they’re all still mostly armed and hunting. It’s a part of our culture. In the history of my town – roughly 1,200 people over a hundred and fifty years – I’m aware of one gun homicide, and that was when the State Police shot a mentally ill woman in what was likely suicide by cop. The State of Maine has had an annual homicide rate of roughly 2 per 100,000 for decades now, which means we usually have a couple dozen homicides a year in the entire state of a million and a quarter people, and usually only a half to three quarters of those are death by firearm. The entire country has had an annual rate of ten to six per 100,000 during that same period, but much of that is in the African American community, which is in melt down.

Healthy communities do not resort to violence to solve problems, and Maine for all its faults is still a pretty healthy place to grow up, and the guns are a part of that. Guns are tools, powerful tools. We grew up in a pretty healthy community with mostly intact families and general respect for each other. We respect our weapons, and we respect eachother. No one shoots anybody else, because that would be utterly crazy, and we are just sane enough not to hurt our neighbors.

Taking our guns away would be to infantilize us. That’s what you do to people who are irresponsible and cannot govern themselves. But we are responsible, and we intend to govern ourselves.

Asking any of us whether we have guns in our houses would be pointless, not to mention rude. The answer would probably be yes, if we felt like telling you. You might as well ask if we had a chainsaw, snow mobile, four wheeler, power tools or accelerants; all of which are just as potentally dangerous to idiots who do not know how to use them properly, and equally as common as twelve gauges and rifles in Maine homes.

You fear what you do not understand. Just assume that in rural New England people you visit have firearms. Don’t worry about it, nobody is going to shoot you or your children so long as you behave yourselves. If the big scary guns bother you, stay in the suburbs where you belong, where only criminals and cops have guns and people are significantly more likely to be violent, and hence are treated with growing condescension and contempt by the nanny state.

  • The writer’s family name does ring a bell from the Vietnam era. To be touting it like a badge of authority in pacifism is a bit much though. Does she really want her clan moniker to become eponymous for the fantasy idealism of a cult that will get its followers killed when sooner or later the real world crashes in on them in the form of a criminal, his gang, or a tyrant. If that happens I’d rather be in the company of the family Lynch. Even the Shenanigans would be safer company.

  • What a load of sentimentalist drivel. Let’s be nicer to the fuzzie-wuzzies and maybe they’ll be nicer back to us, too. That’s the message I get from this possible Darwin Award nominee’s second last paragraph. It’s this kind of mendacious fallacious liberal thinking that has made a mess of America and our libtard &@€?! wants to double down on it.

There’s only one real reason to own firearms and that is if someone wants to steal your lawfully held property; so that, you have the means to place that miscreant under arrest and to use deadly force, if necessary, if that felon resists arrest.

  • As a mother and an activist, here’s what I’ve concluded as 2018 begins: it’s getting harder and harder to think about the future -- at least in that soaring Whitney Houston fashion. You know the song: “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way...” These days, doesn’t...

  • In the wake of Donald Trump’s inauguration, George Orwell’s 1984 soared onto bestseller lists, as did Sinclair Lewis’s It Can’t Happen Here and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which also hit TV screens in a storm of publicity. Zombies, fascists, and predators of every sort are now stalking the American imagination in ever-greater numbers and...
  • Ms Berrigan is sadly misinformed if she thinks that hate and violence is a hallmark of Trump supporters – it seems to be much more a hallmark of Bernie and Hillary supporters.

Still, growing and eating your own veg is good for the soul as much as the body, and I hope this sister moves toward the light. Whether you’re left or right, you are precious in God’s sight.

  • After all Frida’s existential dread of late, this is almost a pleasure to read. It’s good that she has found comfort in wasting money pretending to be self-sufficient. Who cares if civilization is crumbling, we have rediscovered subsistence farming, just without the life or death aspect that made it so compelling. Ooorah.

  • It is popular to count the number of self-references (I, myself, mine) in Hussein Obama’s soliloquies as a reflection on his pervasive narcissism. Regardless of what he is talking about, it is always about him it seems.

Did the same for Frida Berrigan in the above blog posting and counted 56 self-references … and I’m sure I missed a few. That’s a self-reference every 41 words.

It’s not surprising that leftist SJWs seem oblivious to the impact of their virtue signaling on the population at large or the common good. Consequences be damned, it’s all about them … especially how they feel about themselves and how they feel about things. Self-justification as a lifestyle.

From Wikipedia: Self-justification describes how, when a person encounters cognitive dissonance or a situation in which a person’s behavior is inconsistent with their beliefs, that person tends to justify the behavior and deny any negative feedback associated with the behavior.

  • A good example why “patriotism” and “love for your country” doesn’t mean much and mustn’t be honoured – in most cases it only means “love for the country that belongs to me (us,our party)” like “I love this nice suit which belongs to me”. Or even worse: “I love this suit, so I’m entitled to get it for myself”.

A quite different thing would be “love for your people” which would include even the people who don’t belong to your party or didn’t vote for your candidate. But Ms. Berrigan doesn’t care for “the other”.

The way she representats her grandfather is problematic. Was he really an early Cosmopolitan Colonialist which came to America in order to subjugate the inhabitant population and promote the rule of Cosmopolitanism? Or was he perhaps willing to integrate into the inhabitant population (or, horribile dictu, even assimilate to them)?

I have spoken to others with similar pictures. At 12, I progressed from a BB gun to a .22. Much the way Atticus Finch describes acquiring his first gun in To Kill a Mockingbird. Many of my friends , of the same age, also had a .22. On slow Saturday afternoons, we would “shoot cans”. Ammunition was obtained at the local hardware store, albeit, with a note from my mother.

To the best of my knowledge, none of us has ever killed anyone as a civilian. Nor, even thought about it.

  • Hey Frida, why no mention – not even one (in your forty plus paragraphs) – about the industry that will have the most impact (according to studies) on kids with regards to violence? Yes, I’m talking about the entertainment industry.

The amount of violence on television is on the rise (20). The average child sees 12,000 violent acts on television annually, including many depictions of murder and rape. More than 1000 studies confirm that exposure to heavy doses of television violence increases aggressive behaviour,

This statement was taken from this PMC site:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2792691/

I’ll tell you why you didn’t mention it: because the left is in bed with the entertainment industry, and vice versa. Just like some elements of the right were in bed with the tobacco industry back in the 1970′s.

The entertainment industry is the fourth largest industry on the planet, and dwarfs the firearms industry by a factor of 25 to 1. THAT’S why hypocrite leftists and pacifists like you rarely mention the violence portrayed in media – because the media and entertainers are on your side, generally, and have far too much power for you to criticize in any meaningful way. Ever since Bob Dole made an issue of movie and music violence during his presidential campaign, every politician of either political persuasion has come to the conclusion that you don’t criticize the entertainment industry with regards to the violent message it portrays. (Tipper Gore learned this the hard way, as well.)

And that’s why the firearms industry is singled out as the “perpetrator” of violence in the US. And now the toy industry, apparently. They’re small potatoes and easier targets. The fact that advertisers spend billions on media advertising proves that people are influenced by what they see on tv, and on the screen, but when it comes to violence, the left and media producers swear up and down that isn’t the case.

I scanned several pages of your past news columns to see if you had any meaningful criticism of the media, but I found nothing of any substance. I found an article about why your son should wear a dress, and I found and article you wrote justifying the violence perpetrated during the Baltimore riots, but nothing about the entertainment industry.

All you teach a child when you teach him to be a pacifist is how to be a weakling who will look to others for his defense. You can only afford to be a pacifist when there are no individuals around willing to use force against you or when there are individuals around who will enforce your right to pacifism. Otherwise you lose every time. Either way, you are too weak both morally and physically to stick up for yourself and you deserve zero respect.
The “great pacifist” Ghandi knew that much violence that the authorities wished to avoid would be unleashed if he was killed by the authorities. In this way he used violence to agitate for what he wanted. Just as Michael Luther King Jr. did.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when I was growing up, violent crime in this country was at its lowest levels ever and in my neighborhood was non-existent. The USA had also, for the most part, avoided overt wars. President Eisenhower managed to end the killing in Korea, avoid a conflict over Suez, restrain the US from a military response to brutal, Soviet military repressions in East Germany and Hungary, and restrain US involvement in southeast Asia to a score or so of military advisors.

Despite this relatively non-violent period in our nation's history and the complete lack of violence in my neighborhood, every single boy in my neighborhood - and some of the girls - regularly received toy guns and various related paraphernalia as gifts at Christmas. birthdays and other special occasions. Mattel for several years running annually improved and augmented a set of firearms toys that sold particularly well. Evidently toy guns were a big item on the national market. Something confirmed by the shared experiences of me and my college room mates.

So toy guns were a universal childhood experience in a period characterized by very low levels of domestic and foreign violence. But now they are quite scarce on the ground when the country is riven by ever rising levels domestic violence and involved in a seemingly numberless and endless series of foreign adventures. Unless Ms. Berrigan can explain this apparent lack of correlation then her causal argument against toy weapons is dead in the water. Hint to Ms. Berrigan correlation is a necessary component of causation.

Like all "progressive" Ms. Berrigan also exhibits dictatorially totalitarian tendencies that would do a fascist or Stalinist proud. The natural tendency of her children - of all children, in fact -- is to act out aggressive tendencies in play. Ms. Berrigan's natural tendency is evidently to suppress her children's natural tendencies so that they will grow up with levels of repressed rage similar to her own. Could it be that Ms. Berrigan's unconscious hope is that this can then be channeled into further "progressive" aggression? I suspect that Ms. Berrigan's children will need professional counseling to deal with the problems she is creating for them. She herself might consider seeking professional help.

Finally, I'd point out that most of Ms. Berrigan's rage seems directed against boys. Anyone who's observed children realizes that boys are far more aggressive than girls. If denied toy weapons they will improvise them. The font of Western literature contains a recognition of this. Ms. Berrigan might wish to reread how Odyseus recruited Achilles for the Trojan War. Ms. Berrigan is striking deliberately at one of the roots of masculinity. She will probably emasculate her own sons; she may even already have achieved that goal. I don't want her to blight the lives of any other children.

  • “the number of households with guns is actually down from its peak in the late 1960s”

    Not true.

First of all, ever since the early 1990s, when then-President Bill Clinton pushed the Brady bill, the federal so-called “assault weapons” and “large” ammunition magazine ban, and regulations that drove many gun dealers out of business, many gun owners have not identified themselves as such during the surveys. For example, during the first three years of Clinton’s war on guns, Gallup surveys found that the share of people acknowledging that they had guns in their homes dropped from 51 percent to 38 percent.

Furthermore, CBS News poll, conducted right after the terrorist attack on a night club in Orlando, with President Obama and others calling for gun control, found that the percentage of households with at least one gun owner had declined 10 percent since 2012.

That’s a ten percent drop in four years, all the while firearm sales are skyrocketing. It doesn’t take a Ph.D. to know the reliability of these results should be questioned, if not discarded entirely.

And last but not least: surveys are NOT the only way to determine gun ownership rates.

This essay explains why lefties hate guns: they don’t trust themselves with guns, because they know deep down inside how warped they really are. So they project their own inadequacies on everyone else.

A neighbor of mine is a pacifist, feminist, psychologist and helicopter parent of a young boy. She fed him all that leftist anti-gun crap and never let him “play guns,” either. Omar Mateen publicly pledged allegiance to Islamic State while committing the Orlando massacre, there’s no ambiguity at all. And of course Islamic terrorists will use planes, trucks, anything they can to commit their atrocities. This article seems completely divorced from reality – and I see from the ending “I want so much more for, and from, my little boy than “Pow, pow, yous are dead now!” And that starts with taking the gun or the stick or the rainbow flag out of his hands, sitting him down, and having a hard conversation about what guns actually do to people– and how much killing hurts us all.” that it doesn’t get any better. An appetite for “benevolent” intervention in other human’s affairs (rather have aggressive intervention than no intervention at all)?
Or, as she rationalizes it, a physical repulsion against private property (“No, Madeline, in our family, everything belongs to everyone and we are proud of that” – until Madeline takes the last fifty bucks from Mommy’s purse?)

I’d really long to know. But “tomdispatch” doesn’t allow readers to ask questions, and Ms. Berrigan will never read this here.

  • So, you are against American business and individual success. I get it. Trump’s money-billions were stolen from you and your ilk. And you prefer the masquerading standard politician who’s in the game only for the ability to participate in America’s crony-capitalist system. Genuineness in political candidates is an abhorrence to you. Your indoctrination to the belief that only life-long politicians or bureaucrats possess the needed experience to manage America is complete. For you, refreshing outsiders who could really make a difference are anathema. Too bad.

  • Poor kids. While they are “not in the know” about Trump (way too early for her or any children to care about such things), they are also not in the know about their mother–a Xanthippe, something they should understand by puberty.

Shades of Aristophanes’ play ‘The Assemblywomen’

After all these years of campaign stumping, it would seem the intelligent person would maintain some retentiveness of history. Political campaigning has never been anything but a diversionary show to conceal what the real objectives are. Trump is smartly pandering to people’s passions–especially those of women–keeping them distracted from the really important issues few are talking about. But to identify and appropriately act upon them, we would actually have to look at our own expectations, delusions, and ignorance.

And that’s about as far as he gets in the art of storytelling. Sometimes I'll get something about "bim" (gym) or how "Bambi" (Jeremy) pinched him during...

The left is still harping on the Michael Brown case! Read the report on that case by Obama's Justice Department. Darrin Wilson did absolutely nothing wrong. The entire fault for the whole episode lies with Michael Brown, who after robbing a convenience store assaulted Darrin Wilson and attempted to grab Wilson's gun. Wilson's behavior in the entire incident was exactly what was his duty was as a police officer. Michael Brown got exactly what he deserved.

Here's Christopher Bischof's comment in response to a recent Wall Street Journal article about mass shootings.

"Okay. So 500 people were shot to death in mass shootings in the US over the previous 15 years. As if that's the problem.

The average total for homicides in the US over those years was 15,000 a year. At least 10,000 a year were committed with guns, almost exclusively hand-guns.

Therefore, the 15-year total of gun homicides was about 150,000. But for some inexplicable reason we're focused on 500 deaths that represent a fringe form of murder.

But wait. It isn't inexplicable. It's political. It's racist. It's racist because well over half of those 150,000 homicides were committed by blacks, who are only 13 percent of the population. As the FBI says, blacks commit murder at about 8 times the rate of whites.

But we can't say that. It's racist."

Keep things in perspective Frida, otherwise you run the risk of being confused with those people who can be fool(s) all of the time.

As inappropriate as it might be, I have two principal questions no one ever seems to have an answer to.

    1. Is it actually easier to get guns [including handguns] in the US now than it was 50 years ago?

    2. Are there more murders and more incidents of 'fringe murder' like mass shootings than there were then?

If the answer to 1 is yes, then is it not possible to go back to whatever legal regime existed then, which everybody seems to think was in a free country?

If the answer to 1 is no, but the answer to 2 is yes, then what other phenomena are the actual cause and should be addressed?

Actually, it occurs that from the perspective of a little kid I might also ask, why would these drills be any more alarming than fire drills, tornado or earthquake drills, or many other kinds of emergency that schoolchildren in various regions have had to practice for generations?

  • Madeline is in the swing, her face the picture of delight. “Mo, mo,” she cries and kicks her legs to show me that she wants me to push her higher and faster. I push, and push, and push with both hands. There is no thought in my head except for her joy. I’m completely present...
  • Your problem Frida is you actually believe all the BS you are bombarded with everyday. You need a filter, lady. First of all, there are no shortages of natural resources and AGW is nothing more than pure scientific fraud. The Earth isn’t being destroyed. We have plenty of coal and more and more oil is found every year while the technology to retrieve it becomes ever more efficient and effective. Everything you fear is money -driven. Nothing will ever get fixed, no matter how much better it gets, not cancer, not the environment, not racism, not war, etc as long as money can be made off it. Remember the leftist mantra, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” And then remember it is all just media hysteria and BS.

Stop listening to the fear mongers. They are all just lying to you anyway. And stop voting for leftists (including rinos). Maybe then things will improve enough for your grand-kids that they will have jobs and a good life too.
