To Bill Gates' credit, he periodically announces that some education reform fad boondoggle he has credulously financed has failed empirically. For example, in the 2000s he dropped a huge amount of money on "small learning communities," but then in 2009 came the news: And now, from Education Week: So good for Bill for hiring RAND...

This article applies to soccer. Bad decisions really hurt a soccer team* and you can't "coach up" stupid. So keep paying for bright players (especially on defense) and don't spend too much on the coach.

    * very low scoring sports mean less room for overcoming a single mental error.

In the games I’ve watched, half the scores were fluke rebounds off of shots on goals. Something wrong with a game that goes on for 90 minutes and the lone score was the result of an accident.

They need to get rid of the offside rule in soccer and open the game up to long range bombs and stealth raids.

On the plus side, soccer is a game you can watch on TV while reading a book or trimming your toenails and not miss too much.

  • David Lynch is the "Eagle Scout from Missoula, Montana" who has directed Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, one of the more distinctive bodies of work in movie/TV history. Now, at 72, coming off a long fallow period followed by a successful sequel to his famous Twin Peaks TV series, he's promoting his...

Is it a ruse? Or a Burkean veil that protects us from horror….

So much of 'conservative' norms and aesthetics are a ruse. They are amnesiac and 'family-friendly'. The opening image of the perfect idyllic suburb in BLUE VELVET lulls one into believing that there was no history, no struggle, no conflict. Everything is just so sunny and bucolic. It's as if this Nice Ideal America had always existed.

This is why so many 'conservatives' were ill-equipped for the Struggle. They were complacent in their beliefs and convictions. They took things for granted. They believed in Nice America of Nice People doing Nice Things. So, we just need to be Nice and More Nice and all will work out. But in fact, the US was founded through massive violence on other peoples and on nature. It was not some dream but a reality created by struggle and violence. But the ruse of Nice Conservatism makes one naive and simple-minded. It's like how Buddha was raised in the false Eden by his father. So, when he saw real reality, he freaked. And so many 'conservatives' who were raised on Nice Myths either remain simple-minded or become so disillusioned that they turn hard-radical.

It's like we take health for granted, but illness can hit us at any moment. So, the man collapses in the Nice Suburbs in the opening of BLUE VELVET. And then we see the Dali-Bunuelian-Kafka-Burroughsy ants crawling all through the grass, reminding us that humans too are organisms caught in eternal struggle and conflict... something that soon involves the young hero in lust, fear, dominance, revenge. He has to save a woman from a man who is a 'baby who wants to f***'. Milius went there too but with more mythology than psychology.

Lynch is part of counter-culture that used drugs. But if some people went flaky and new age with the experience, Lynch found something dark and morbid from the experience. In this, he shares something with David Cronenberg who is also ideologically ambiguous. Cronenberg fears the 'Aryan Right' but is also intensely tribal and paranoid. And very pessimistic and skeptical about human nature. David Mamet is the same way. Being oddball and bohemian, they obviously have liberal tendencies because creativity, especially following modernism, is about originality and strangeness, which have been more welcomed by Liberals than by Conservatives who are, culturally, either traditionalist or totally philistine. It's a fact that even profoundly conservative artists will have a bigger audience among Liberals than among Conservatives. Many more Liberals than Conservatives care about Bresson and Tarkovsky.

Unlike Nice Conservatives, Lynch is fascinated with the 'degenerate'. He sees it part of existence. Our bodies are filled with germs and decay and rot. Niceness is necessary as a ruse but is a ruse just the same. Delve into reality, and it's a chaotic mess. And religions are the same way. Conservatives prefer a 'family values' religion, but read the Bible closely and it's one hellish tale.
Scorsese's LAST TEMPTATION isn't very good, but it gets to the heart of something that borders on the Lynchian. If Jesus was Man(as well as God), then he had to overcome all the biological processes of man that is filled with lust, hate, anger, and terror. Christians take for granted that Jesus is the holy Son of God whose image and story should be handled with respect. But before Jesus became the Holy Myth, what did he have to go through to rise above biology? Such question puts off many Conservatives. It's like Pat Buchanan just dismisses LAST TEMPTATION as satanic. He did like PASSION by Gibson that is bloody and gory but still a very conventional telling of Jesus story. It's all about Jesus was so tough he could take one hell of a beating. There is little in the sense of inner struggle.

Which is the definition of true conservatism….

What is true conservatism according to most people who profess to be 'conservatives'? It's usually confused. Most 'conservatives' in the US want to keep it Nice, which is why people who ask deeper and uncomfortable questions like Richwine and Derbyshire have been fired by Heritage and National Review. It's gotten so ridiculous that the socialist George Orwell now seems more conservative than most people who call themselves 'conservatives'.

ANIMAL FARM should be re-read as HBD tale. Humans are so much like farm animals. Humans differ according to ability and personality. Some people are more able in certain areas than in other areas. And people have wide range of personality from passive to aggressive. And we see these differences not only among individuals but among races and ethnic groups.
In the end, why do pigs come out on top in ANIMAL FARM? It isn't so much because they are evil. It's just their nature that favors them. Without humans to maintain control, the logic of biology plays out and favors certain animals for domination and control. Pigs are highest in mental ability and more obsessive in appetite. Pigs are the smartest farm animals and the most hungry/voracious. In the end, nature takes over and favors certain groups over others. End of History is the same way. It's no surprise that globalism favors those with the most hunger and most ability, those who are most piglike in IQ and ambition, those for whom enough is never enough; they want more and more and they got the brains and cunning to get it.
And this return of biology is something Lynch dealt with too. Sperm and stomach dictate behavior in ERASERHEAD. Elephant Man cannot escape what he is. The main character's heroism in BLUE VELVET is inspired by lust, revenge, and pride. He enters the Minotaur's cave. Selywn cannot escape biology in MUL DR. Despite her fantasies, she is less talented and less attractive.

    Provocative essay, as usual.

“Our bodies are filled with germs and decay and rot.”

Comments here, interesting as always, speak of the terror, the discord and emotional upheaval that lies just below the veneer of civilized life. This is our 20th-century, Freudian insight into psychic life.

But what constitutes health and subdues the “germs, decay and rot”, what spins the veneer–and the veneer is not just a coverup–is the harmonic integrity of the organism. Well-being is a verb. There is no protection, no safety except in strength. Strength is health. Health is good habits. Good habits = square = fundamentally conservative since conservatives believe there is something worth preserving and are willing to act on that belief.

Liberalism is all about living in the moment. Eliminating the gap between knowing subject and self as object. It is a reaction against consciousness because consciousness implies responsibility and that entails accepting guilt for having caused suffering in the other. The Liberal is tormented by anxiety of condemnation and seeks to live a guilt-free existence. A conservative recognizes that guilt is implicit in being human; that to live is to eat, to eat is to murder. And we all need a place to live and that means that someone else isn’t going to get to live in that place. A cannot be both A and non A. It’s simple Aristotelian logic. The basic Law of Identity. So scram, buddy. There’s just some guilt involved in being an organism going about its own business of living.

Liberals favor psychic experiences that erase the conscious Self. They’re into rowdy partying, drugs, trances, rock concerts, anything that puts the self into the Eternal Now. Conservatives recoil from the Eternal Now because they don’t want to forsake control; they fear that “germs, decay and rot” will take over if they let go. Liberals trust in life itself, like a concert goer who throws himself into the air, trusting that the crowd will catch him before he falls to the floor. Conservatives trust and protect their hard-earned integrity.

Liberalism is fun, a kind of dream, but it is no place to spend a lifetime if one wants to accomplish much. Accomplishing much requires concerted effort and the tyranny of concerted effort is precisely what liberals want liberation from. They want to be in the NOW and concerted effort involves foresight, a downer. “I don’t want to hear that” or “I don’t have to listen to this” are liberals’ defenses against anything that threatens their taking child-like pleasure in the moment.

    .

how does it make China a 'hostile entity',

“how does it make China a ‘hostile entity‘”

Human nature. It’s sad but true that when one party is dependent upon the other, the one with the upper hand exploits that to their advantage.

Making stuff requires not just IQ and talent. There’s a positive feedback loop involved where those who make stuff become ever more proficient while those who don’t face a formidable cliff if they hope to catch up; which is precisely why the USA, Germany and Britain enjoyed hegemony over the 2nd and 3rd world countries for so long.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. But more interesting, Veblen pointed out that the workforce in a technical society is forced to deal with measurement, standards and critical evaluation, all of which force the worker to attend to the world on its terms. The workers in a technical economy, dragged out of their nativist subjectivity, acquire an adult understanding of their place in an orderly world. They are less easily fooled by bulls*t and hype, less prone to superstition and fantasy, their understanding more grounded in the Laws of Nature and the world as it is.

Now if this is true–and recent event suggest that it is–then we in the USA are in for some tough times ahead. There’s already evidence that our people are increasingly swayed by superstition and fantasy, viz, belief in myths surrounding e.g. Trayvon Martin = sweet innocent black boy, Barack Obama = greatest president in American history, white men = slave drivers whipping black males, “millions” of black males lynched over the last 100 years, war on transgender amounts to holocaust and so on.

People this deluded can’t be reasoned with. This does not bode well for the nation.

in fact, since the DC Treason Gang began signing on to massive FT deals, U.S. has accumulated:

a $2 trillion trade deficit with Europe,

and a $150,000,000,000/year trade deficit with Mexico.

Exactly. Her entire argument is predicated on a wrong assumption; that the U.S. has balanced trade relations with these nations.

And, like a typical woman, she can’t understand why the men of one nation (USA) would feel uncomfortable with relying on another nation (China) for the manufacture of its everyday consumer products.

For women today stuff just magically appears. They don’t care how it works, the science behind it or about how to maintain or repair it. They don’t realize that men think seriously about how to make the world what it is. In fact, they despise or pity serious-minded men, accusing them of “mansplaining” when he tries to tell her about checking the oil in the car while he’s gone for three months, working abroad. They like men who don’t bring up such downer subjects as maintaining machines. Carefree men, like her Father was (hah!, if she only knew how hard he thought and labored to insulate her from stress while she was growing up).

Bollocks. Derb wrote about MacDonald's work what he deemed to be necessary. My opinion is that JD does not know or care about historical nuances tendentiously presented in MacDonald's magnum opus, so he didn't bother to address them point by point.

Anyway, this all is tiresome. I'll just c/p what I wrote some time ago on MacDonald's work, I don't think the issue deserves nanoanalysis...

I’ve already said that most MacDonald’s claims were bogus. Since I am not too interested in the topic (Peterson, Jewish conspiracy, IQ, Ivy League over/under-representation,..), I’ll just copy-paste what I’ve posted on his magnum opus & that would be it.

To analyze most of his specific claims is as useless & boring as are most of his grand assertions.

    * Jews “follow group evolutionary strategy”. He didn’t prove that such a strategy exists at all, apart from a trivial observation that any human collective wants to preserve its identity & to thrive. No “strategy” in such a behavior.

    * also, the author’s description of “Jewish movements” is non-verifiable & actually difficult to describe. From what I know of Marxism, psychoanalysis or Leninism- these were not “Jewish” movements, neither in intellectual genesis nor with regard to their proponents.
What about other intellectual currents, prominent in 20th & 21st C? Do these movements or cultural currents qualify as “Jewish”: anarchism, free-love leftism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, German phenomenology in philosophy, cultural critique (Derrida & Foucault following Heidegger), New Left with its post-1968 ideology, multiculturalism as ideology, Jungian archetypal psychology, New Age ideologies, radical Feminism, “New Atheism”, evolutionary psychology, sociobiology, various schools of economics (Austrian, Chicago,..), structuralism in humanities, ..?

    * what about areas where ethnic Jews are over-represented in 20th & 21st fields: theoretical physics, all branches of mathematics, chess masters, computer science, violin virtuosi, philanthropists in arts & curators of museums, film directors & producers, ..? Are these areas somehow driven by Jewish interests, whether conscious or not? How can we ascertain this?

Although I admire MacDonald’s work in demolition of maudlin myth the core American Jewish community has over time built about it (eternal victims & universal humanitarians), I don’t see his work as dispassionate analysis that would be close to even such a non-exact “science” as evolutionary psychology claims to be. With its broad sweep of generalizations, MacDonald’s work on historical traits of Judaism (as cultural-historical identity) is not unlike other historiosophies, similar to St. Augustine, Gioacchino da Fiore, Hegel, Marx or Spengler.

There are insights in these works- but they are basically an imaginative construction, not more.

Jews are ethnic religious tribalists who had, many of them, lived in Europe for most than 2000 years. Somewhere during the Nero’s rule, they constituted ca 10% of Roman Empire, i.e. 5-6 million people. Have they had an opportunity for natural growth, there would have been ca. 250-400 million of them now. But, most of them assimilated, vanished into greater Pagan & then Christian communities. So much for stubborn insistence of religious-ethnic pride.

There is no “group evolutionary strategy”, only if it stands for something trivial: any ethnic-national group wants to exist ad infinitum & prosper.
This applies to every single human community.
As for Jews being particularly ethno-centric, this may be the truth in comparison with some other groups, but they didn’t differ from Zoroastrian Iranians or Hindu Brahmins; there is no way to empirically verify whether their ethnocentrism is rooted in ancient religious texts older than 1500 years (Babylonian Talmud, 250-600 AD) or something else. No causal connection can be made & all this is bogus.

With regard to MacDonald’s thesis that Jews are culturally-generically predisposed to domination in host societies, this is an easily refutable canard: they lived harmoniously, peacefully & productively during Parthian, Zoroastrian, Abbasid empires, Cordoba caliphate, Ottoman Empire…as well as in the 17th-18th C Netherlands or 18th C Prussia.
They tried (and to a larger degree succeeded) to assimilate into British & German Empires, from the beginning to the end.

MacDonald’s theses are very simple & cannot pass the test of any rational & empirical investigation.

Jews are, according to him, essentially, due to a compound of genes, history, religious ideology,… eternal enemy of “white race”.
Not real. They lived among Europeans for almost 2 millennia & had virtually always been at the history’s receiving end. After their Enlightenment at the end of the 18th C, they avidly secularized themselves & were literally hungry for the riches of high European culture (arts, sciences, technology, ..), trying to assimilate as fast as they could. No “evolutionary group strategy” here, not anything that would preserve them as an alien dominant cultural-biological ethnicity..

Jews are far from a monolith existing in MacDonald fantasy.
It is true they, those of them who still possess Jewish identity, try to help their co-religionists if they are in trouble (which is a perfectly normal behavior). But, their primary loyalty is to their host societies, which can be seen from German Jewish behavior during WW1, when their military deaths were higher than their percentage in the population. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judenz%C3%A4hlung French Jews fought for France, British for Britain etc.

According to MacDonald, Jews are basically destructive to a host society, like a group of pathogen bacteria swarming & sucking life out their host-victim. They’re, actually, not unlike a cancer. Another example of dehumanization & antisemitic nonsense. What about good they’ve done to their host societies, in culture, wealth, inventions, development of commerce, journalism, agriculture, arts,..

Persistent MacDonald’s myth is about their extraordinarily high levels of endogamous practice. In reality, Catholic and Protestants didn’t mix much until the 20th C, and Jews (not converts) have been in mixed marriages with German Christians at the rate of 30-40%, during 1933 (Hitler’s rise to power); now, more than 60% of Jews outmarry and more than 80-90% of them do so in Russia. Where is this MacDonald’s grand “evolutionary strategy”?

Then, he is tendentious. MacDonald presents Spanish conversos/Marranos from 15th and 16th C as ethnically-racially homogeneous group. A part of them must have stayed that way- it is perfectly natural that forcibly converted people (who had already possessed their written culture & rituals) will adopt chameleon-like behavior. So did Moriscos, forcibly converted Muslim Arabs. So, it’s not about specific Jewish traits; it is about religious violence & natural resistance of people who had found themselves on the receiving end of pressure for religious conformity. MacDonald implies that many, perhaps most Marranos succeeded in surviving Inquisition in next 2-3 centuries. True, some Marranos have succeeded to retain their identity & emigrate later to the Netherlands or Ottoman empire, but most of them vanished into broader Iberian societies.

Conspicuously, MacDonald has glossed over the fact that most Jewish Germans in the 19th C had been assimilated with high percentage of intermarriage.
Marranos in 16th C did-at least a part of them-tried to retain their separate identity. Not so in early 19th C Germany, where many Jews had voluntarily been baptized & completely assimilated into German society-no Jewish separatism & tribal behavior. No “Jewish Christian” secret societies, clannish behavior, endogamous marriages…
Mendelssohn family simply disappeared among other Germans.

How so if they’re eternally alien ethnic group? Where I can see that famous survival strategy? This “strategy”, it seems, leads only to obliteration of a separate national identity.

Or, after all, Einstein (whose descendants are not Jews) was right: If it were not for antisemitism, Jews would have dispersed like leaves in the wind.

“also, the author’s description of “Jewish movements” is non-verifiable & actually difficult to describe. From what I know of Marxism, psychoanalysis or Leninism- these were not “Jewish” movements, neither in intellectual genesis nor with regard to their proponents.”

From the ground, clouds too appear to be separate entities, each going its own way. But from space, clouds are seen to be parts of a larger coherent system. Not understanding them to be such means not understanding them at all; it is to have the vision of a child.

It's apparent that the current liberal political philosophy goes something like this:

"Hey, let's massively overpopulate our country just so we can lock in a Democratic winning vote forever! Then we'll can vote ourselves all the social services that Sweden has! Whoop!"

Except that massively overpopulated countries don't have a proper social welfare safety net. They can't afford it because they're overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of poor people who can't pay anything in taxes, which is needed to fund the safety net. India has around 400 million people who are considered dirt poor, and they don't generate enough tax revenue for a safety net, and the Indian middle class doesn't generate enough tax revenue to provide a net for both themselves and 400 million poor people, who are a millstone around their society's neck and an unsolvable problem.

China does not offer social welfare benefits to people who live in rural areas, only those who are middle-class dwellers in cities. There are about 600 million in rural China outside the any sort of safety net. Their middle class cannot afford to pay for the burden of all those poor people. Yet American liberals, who have no clue, want to flood our country with lots of poor Hispanics and other third worlders, and liberals think we will benefit from this.

The US used to have better benefits, back when our population was smaller. Companies offered their workers healthcare benefits as a hiring perk. This was because labor was in high demand. When an employer really, really wants you, they will cough up. Smaller populations have more bargaining chips available to them. Larger populations have to take what they can get because they don't have leverage. If their boss tells them to work long hours for low pay and like it, that's what they have to do because they'll just starve to death with no job.

I know liberals have no grasp of Supply and Demand from Economics 101, but their feeble minds ought to be able to remember their lessons in Ecology and the whole concept of 'overstraining resources.'

When a city slicker like Bret Stephens drives through the countryside and sees a forest he doesn’t say “there’s a tree farm” (for the harvest of which we already have the necessary labor and machines). Instead he sees a potential 40 acres and a mule farm for an immigrant family.

Just what a modern, industrial nation needs, subsistence farmers.

America's only serious investigative journalism outfit, The Daily Mail, obtained an exclusive with the father of the child crying on the cover of Time:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5869829/Father-two-year-old-face-child-separation-crisis-speaks-out.html

TL;DR: He has a decent job. His wife paid $6,000 to smuggle their youngest child (leaving the other three back in Honduras) into the States against his wishes, was not separated from her child, and is now claiming "political asylum". That is, her asylum case is bullshit and she endangered her child to emotionally blackmail the authorities because her middle-class-for-Honduras existence just wasn't good enough.

So what didn't we already know?

Exactly. And next come the tearful pleas for “family reunification” which will bring husband with their three kids in tow across as well.

Oh, and husband claims that although he had heard her talk about leaving for the United States for a better life, he allegedly was not aware that she had left until he saw her picture in the news. Right. She traveled 1800 miles and forked out $6000–where did she come up with that kind of dough? And without his being aware that she had it?–for a coyote and he claims to have been ignorant of the whole scheme??? Bullshot.

These people are gaming the system and liberals, basking in their self-congratulatory smugness are either too gullible or traitorous to see through it.

And if, on the other hand, they don’t work and stay home to take care of their brood, then who will support them? And this is not a false dilemma. My wife works with these people every day. These is the real situation these people import with them. It’s compounded by the fact that the typical Meso American illegal immigrant cannot speak English.

    Feature, not bug.

Dolt wrangling is a lucrative industry. Gotta find jobs for all those studies studies and social work majors/AAs/BAs, ya know. And who better to pay the tab than you, taxpayer?

Why do you think the religious denominations lead the field in migrant trafficking? Today's $56K per head in taxpayer funding for importing a brown child will bring in countless millions of federal and state bling each year for the rest of that carbon unit's life.

And they can launder it all through the Altruism Factory.

This is the same strategy that colleges like The Evergreen State College are using. Not quality education, but the ideology-justified processing of low-intelligence individuals who bring fat panniers of federal bling. (IIRC a member of the BBQ posse told me that over 50% of Evergreen's students already arrive with Pell Grants, e.g.)

An interesting example, btw, given that Pugetopolis is also the home of The World's Richest Man and his consumerism-addiction business...that can't seem to run without huge tax subsidies from things like USPS or local construction incentives.

Agree with much of what you have posted here except that I think the quibble about causation is possibly a waste of time. Does physical strength lead to high IQs or is it the other way around? Hard to answer that, IMHO.

But what is very apparent is that physically strong societies have tended to be high IQ societies. The correlation seems to be strong, regardless of what is cause and what the effect. Possibly there are other root factors here and there seem to be numerous to-and-fro linkages as well: Physically strong and healthy populations arise in healthy but at the same time challenging climates where hard work is necessary for survival; which in turn provide necessary diet, nutrition, physical effort, and mental effort for both the mind and the body to develop. Healthy bodies produce keen and inquiring minds, and strong minds in turn take better care of health, diet and life-style, thereby remaining physically strong generation after generation.

Where the climate and nature have been too easy or too harsh, the result has been physically and mentally undeveloped societies. The tropical climates with bountiful nature have produced lazy, easy-going, and undeveloped peoples, capable of neither mental nor physical effort. The very harsh climes have produced people who had to be physically strong, but those societies never really managed to accomplish anything beyond survival.

It is interesting that the scatter of physical strength (as estimated by grip strength here) correlates fairly well with high IQ and successful societies. Physical strength of population groups then becomes a matter not just of sporting contests but seems to lead to the very heart of measuring the success of races and civilizations.

I recall Jefferson’s quote when, as ambassador to France, he, upon looking around the room could tell those who were Americans because they stood a head taller than their European counterparts.

The high-quality protein diet of the Americans made them physically more imposing human beings.

Could America’s 19th century genius have come from the more intense selective pressure of competition between and amongst our really well fed people? Is our nutritional-wasteland diet today partly responsible for the decline in our intelligence and genius?

Mark Twain spends a paragraph or two describing the fresh wild game, fish and oysters available at good restaurants in Baltimore, New Orleans and NYCity; food we can only dream about today.

The class of Overlords has always reserved for itself exclusive access to meat. Vegetables and grains for the peons, who, consequently, as dullards, were deemed incapable of self rule.

The diet for the masses in the future will be color-coded bricks of soy, pulped chard, cornstarch and vegetable oil; green for vegetable, red for protein and yellow for starch. Consumers of such will be dopes, maybe literally since a la Huxley, the bricks will be doped with drugs to lull and sooth.

Anyway, this is the trend visible even today.

The average "American" of Sicilian or Jewish origin like Pacino or Hoffman does not stand a head taller than a Dutchman!

I once asked a German why, for example, German-Americans are taller on average than Germans and he told me that this was because most of the Germans who immigrated to America were of peasant stock.

A Frenchman told me the same thing about the Quebecois, who are more sturdy on average than a Parisian. They derive from strapping Breton country stock.

This is akin to what Jimmy the Greek stated about blacks. White Americans of Anglo-Celtic descent, for example, will tend to be from peasant labor stock and so taller and more muscular than the average Brit because in the US the white peasants bred with white peasants.

Remember that most Europeans came to America because the factories and farms needed strong backs. The white women willing to ride on boats for 4 weeks were the sturdier lasses.

Great examples of the "appeal to emotion" logical fallacy, sub-subject "think of the children."

Himmelherrgott, my immigrant parents and grandparents would simply not understand our contemporary Zeitgeist. For example, my father took me to visit the Statue of Liberty as a kid (and he was very proud about donating to its renovation during the '80s). He was so thankful: served in wartime, buried in a vet cemetery, etc. And he was very adamant about following US laws.

Everything's now para los niños ;) My heart goes out to South and Central American folks wanting to escape their bad situations -- some of them are my neighbors! But follow our laws if possible.

Exactly. The logical fallacy argumentum ad miseracordiam.

For the first time in my life I tuned into the broadcast of the House of Representatives the other day. What a circus. The Democrat ladies were tag teaming at the mike and the subject was the inhumanity of the child-separation debacle. After 15 minutes of anguish, anger and tears, the odious Rep. Guttierrez was allowed to speak. He promptly brought in a gaggle of hispanic Ninos for whom we were all supposed to feel compassion. They were, by his lights, the living proof of Trumps inhumanity to man.

Right in your own Chicago. I was driving around from Michigan to Wisconsin on the expressway and motorcyclists on crotch rockets were weaving in and around traffic that was going 65. They must have been doing 100 mph. It gave me shivers just watching them. They’re beside and around you before you even see them coming in the rear-view mirror. Now, I’m a risk taker, (have descended mountain passes on a bicycle at over 50mph) but these young guys were just literally accidents waiting to happen. No way they could do this for long without mishap. There must be a name for what they’re doing, weaving in and out at suicidal speed and risk.

There is wheat and chaff in this lane-splitting activity: it absolutely can be done for years a d years and years with not anything close to a mishap – but not by many. It's like flying for the Blue Angels that way. One thing: the talented absolutely at all times are aware cagers don't see them or heed them: we are operating in fact on the assumption that we are invisible at best, but more likely being proactively targeted for death with murderous intent by cagers. This mindset is crucial to survival. Experience, reflexes, not exceeding the limits of oneself or ones context and, above all, taking full advantage of the far greater speed, manoueverability, and situational awareness afforded by a motorcycle vs. a cage (someone else mentioned this phenomenon already regarding bicyclists better situational awareness) are the keys to survival.

Distances also matter. When I lived in Southern Mexinchifornia and Silly Valley I could do this every day. When I fled the Valley and took up the mega commute I had to switch to buses: the distance means mental and physical fatigue were too great for the stuff I just described (again, to use the fighter jet analogy: one can only maintain all that effort for relatively short periods of time, say, a half hour commute is about the limit). Plus too, environment and infrastructure matter: fog and rain on the shitshow that is the Altamont Pass (I think many rural roads in Cambodia are better paved) were another reason I had to forego the bike for commutes.

All that said, there's certainly risk even for the best of us, and there are certainly far more fools who wind up hurt or dead than otherwise. Remember: the majority of motorcyclists on the roads at any time are not even licensed to drive a motorcycle! They're driving illegally and without proper training and qualifications. This dramatically skews both anecdotal experience with "crazy motorcyclists" a son we'll ask quantitaive data about "accidents involving motorcycles...."

I rode a moped all around Corfu off the coast of Albania in 1980 for like a gallon of gas for an eight hour trip. It was a huge amount of fun, although no doubt noisy and smelly for bystanders.

Of course, Greek standards of public safety in 1980 were not all that high. At the beach I rode to on a moped, there was suddenly a vast eruption about a 100 feet offshore. My initial reaction was that it must have been a WWII mine detonating. But two guys who looked like fishermen brothers were standing impassively on the shore holding bags, then they waded out and grabbed the dead fish who floated to the surface. Then a scuba diver surfaced, holding his ears, and started screaming at the guys going fishing with dynamite.

    “I rode a moped all around Corfu…”

That’s funny, I did the same thing in 1990, girlfriend on the back. And probably rented the same motor bike which, likely, hadn’t been serviced since you rode it. The brakes barely worked and it coughed and sputtered. There were some great views from the bluffs overlooking the sea.

Signs are posted reminding cyclists to say “Passing on your left” before they pass pedestrians to give them warning and prevent startling them. Virtually every cyclist obliges. Far as I know, there have always been a percentage of natural blonde, light-eyed people in the Mediterranean basin.

They existed in Greece, the Balkans, the Italian peninsula, and Spain.

As for the Romans, they weren't north Italian, nor south. They were middle Italians, living in the Latium plain.

They probably were genetically similar to the Italians still in that region today, but with medium-dark brown hair and eyes. light skin and "classical" features (the strong, straight "Roman" nose, and so forth).

North Italians are more German-admixtured, due to the influx during the Germanic Migrations. More blue-eyed blondes, for one thing. Pre-German North Italians probably looked like Romans.

South Italians, for their part, have Moorish blood.

No, that's a myth peddled by people who like to portray Italians as somehow not European or colloquially, "not really white." Italians on the mainland, even the south, rarely have any substantial North African genes. They often have no North African genes at all, and almost never have sub-Saharan African genes.

My mother, who always considered herself "all Italian", took a genetic test and came out about 80-plus percent southern Italian and ZERO percent North African or any other kind of African.

My genetic test reported nearly 50% Italian, specifically pinpointed to regions in central-to-southern Italy (Lazio and Campania), and again, ZERO percent North African or any kind of African.

Do not confuse the typical genetics of southern mainland Italians with those of people in Sicily and Malta -- utterly different.

Southern Italians are much likelier to have appreciable Greek or Balkan genes than North African. Both my mother and I likely have "Balkan" ancestry, say the reports. Likewise, numerous cousins on the Italian side of the family (in two generations) have done genetic tests recently; most found Greek genes, more than ten percent in a couple cases. One cousin found one-point-something % North African genes at the most "speculative" level available for the report, and the others found zero African of any variety.

I'm sure that stats are available that comport with our personal experience, I'll look for 'em. In other words, I don't think that our family is atypical, i.e. "unusually white/European" for southern Italians.

Now the folks in Spain, I'm reading that they DO often have more substantial North African or Arab genes. Not mainland Italy.

  • Let a bunch of limp-wristed, Hindoo, disembodied, intellectual brains into your country to write the programming for girly-gossip devices that preoccupy the attention of our young people and you end up with a generation of confused geldings–who’da thunk it?

This is what I was talking about last week. We AmeroEuros are a nation of strong people. That wedded to our superior intellect was the recipe for success. Lynn’s IQ of Nations and many thinkers here are confused. They believe that high IQ creates great societies. Since Flynn, Lynn, et al. are only looking at cross sections and not long-term historical longitudinal studies, they have confused cause with effect.

High IQ societies arise out of strong societies because only strong societies can guarantee the security and stability which are prerequisites for the peaceful pursuit of purely intellectual and artistic ends.

A weak society, such as ours is today, dominated as it is by limp-wristed Jews and Hindoos cannot safeguard the borders, cannot maintain hegemony over institutions through which higher culture is disseminated such as elite universities and media, cannot protect women, cannot guard against assault by bullying minorities, in short, leave all civilized institutions open to attack and invasion by the barbarians at the gates.

We have put the cart before the horse. To be sure, high IQ is a leading determinate of progressive, advanced, technical societies, but that is a necessary not a sufficient cause. Strength and Unity matter just as much if not more.

Let’s flex some muscle and take back what is rightfully ours and in the process restore ourselves to our rightful position. We don’t need Hindoo programmers to program us. That they can do so solely in their characteristically weak-gripped way and that we should become weak-gripped ourselves in the process should come as no surprise.

Physical strength of population groups then becomes a matter not just of sporting contests but seems to lead to the very heart of measuring the success of races and civilizations.
    , @dfordoom

To be sure, high IQ is a leading determinate of progressive, advanced, technical societies, but that is a necessary not a sufficient cause. Strength and Unity matter just as much if not more.

    I'm inclined to agree.

You need not just strength, but moral strength (which we don't have). And not just political unity (which we don't have) but unity of purpose (which we also don't have).
    , @dfordoom

To be sure, high IQ is a leading determinate of progressive, advanced, technical societies.

High IQ in moderation is a strength. A society needs a very small number of high IQ highly educated people. Maybe one or two percent of the population.

But for most people high IQ is a weakness, and for a society a large number of high IQ highly educated people is a very major weakness.

A university education is necessary for a tiny proportion of the male population. It's not necessary for any of the female population. If you want to Make America (or any other nation) Great Again the first step is to start shutting down universities.

  • Too much emphasis on IQ has brought about our present condition in which Hindus and East Asians are elevated to positions of influence in America for which they are not suited. As John Calhoun’s behavioral sink experiments with rats showed, a society in which there is no physical striving for limited resources and no physical competition to activate hormones that masculinize males, such a stress-free society, will paradoxically, ultimately, when allowed to run its course, die out due to lack of sexual interest by males.

Today, with the gatekeeper role of admission to Ivy League colleges determined heavily by scoring on standardized tests, striving has been sublimated from the physical into the purely mental. Those admitted are disembodied intellects. They are neuters, dorkwad nerds i.e. East Asians and Hindus.

The healthy, balanced, physically imposing yet mentally competent males are left out. Not attaining the highest positions of power and influence, the fittest are not breeding at replacement levels.

Exclusive emphasis on IQ and g is suicide for any society. Physically imposing strength counts equally in a healthy male. The death of Athens, Rome and now us is due to the ascendence of a feminized crop of disembodied young males to positions of power.

Early Greek and Roman civil life extolled the necessity of balance in personality traits. Both Aristotle and Plato emphasized training the body with gymnastics, wrestling and music. Later Empires of Athens and Rome saw the rise of self-centered dandies and fops to top positions in politics. There were not men cast in the heroic mold of Socrates or Pericles who were soldiers as well as philosophers and statesmen.

Till the end of WW2, America admired and promoted the blend of good traits that characterized an integrated man of power. Now we have been sold a bill of goods by promoters of exclusively cerebral traits and are suffering the consequences. Not more brains, but more balls are needed. That the neutered Dorks have no interest in defending their own territory or fighting for hot babes is evidence that something is amiss.

You are assuming that war and conflict are inherently bad for the human race. John Calhoun's rats in a cage experiment demonstrated just the opposite. When the experiment was allowed to run it course all the rats died out but not because of conflict--just the opposite! They died out because of lack of conflict. There being no competition between males for females, territory or food, certain hormones were not secreted in young males which resulted in their losing their sex drive.

The colony died out because of disinterest in competition, combat and sex. Instead, the young males spent their time preening themselves--not unlike leftists in American colleges and young Swedish men today who engage in moral preening through their SJWism.

Combat releases hormones that make men protective and nationalistic, not the other way around. To become brave, you have to act brave. That's why social planners in the West today steer young men away from competitive rough and tumble sports and into girly sports like soccer. A society composed of weak, complacent, non-aggressive young men chattering like seventh-grade girls on their cell phones is easy to coerce.

Recently I was trying to watch an old movie in which Bruce Willis led a team of elite ranger types into deepest Africa to haul out some sorry assed nuns, priests and a nurse who were tending the walking wounded, victims of the mayhem and violence attending one of that continent’s interminable revolutions.

Of course, the nurse, as a classical liberal, responded to Willis’ insistence that they leave immediately before the rebels overran the church/hospital by saying she wouldn’t leave her patients etc., would stay and die with them before she left them and so on. Absolutely absurd logic, but that’s what passes for morality in Hollywood. Anyway, there it is. The white man being called upon to put his and the lives of his trained buddies on the line for the moronic self-defeating logic of the white chick.

Why? Why didn’t he just say, “As you like” and walk away? Why does the white man bother? White women have grown to expect this and hence, they take advantage of us.

So, they go out and screw around with whomsoever they please and then expect, demand, that the white man pick up the tab. “Do it for the children” is always the prelude to a request for a handout.

White women need to be scared straight. Today, they face no consequences for their acts. White men protect them and support their bastard offspring. We should refuse.

No white woman should receive a penny’s support for her child if that child is the offspring of a man of a non-white race. She made her bed, let her sleep in it.

Now who was it that just bought the largest debt pool in the world–the American mortgage market–with fictitious money created in the climate of the (((Fed’s))) low interest rates and the SEC’s lax enforcement and then turned around and used those mortgages as (basically) collateral for debt instruments which they then peddled around the world?

You have to understand the racial dynamics of integrated community centers to know why whites have run from basketball. If you're a good white player you risk being subjected to aggravated assault every time you show up some black guy on the court. A friend of mine got knocked out cold back in the early 90s for nailing three pointers over black defenders. I, personally, wouldn't even set foot in the community courts back then.

We white kids had the outdoors, but the indoor spaces belonged to the blacks (including my high school cafeteria -- we white kids ate outside even in winter). But this was in the Pacific NW. In sunnier places like CA the blacks probably had the outdoor spaces as well.

“If you’re a good white player you risk being subjected to aggravated assault every time you show up some black guy on the court.”

True. When there are no refs (police) around, black guys revert to the law of the jungle. I saw the same stuff in Ann Arbor at the outdoor courts. Went once, watched a white guy get beat up by a black guy for no reason at all and I never went back. Wasn’t that way before the 67 riots though. At least down in Indiana. When blacks realized that they had permission to riot and destroy property they metamorphized into subhuman monsters.

The EU was created by old fashioned capitalists and liberals to solve the problem that Germany was needed for economic recovery and Nato, but could not be allowed true independence again. Now Germany is dominating the European area by the very means that were supposed to keep them from doing just that. Far from fearing German power, greedy French hypercapitalists are awash in toxic debt because of loans to the Italians, and need Germany for mutulisation. Macron is their last hope. Starting with the architect of Italy going into the EU ( Giulio Andreotti) Italians never intended to fulfill their financial obligations. Now they are showing unmistakable signs of saying it openly , thus causing the collapse of the banks ofFrance

John Gray says the Western economy is now based on hypercapitalism and the values of an "alt.liberalism" are in the ideological driving seat. Alt.liberalism considers any restriction on immigration to be inherently racist. Thus Germany successfully invades France, and the Frence elite are not only in on the whole thing, they are depending on it. Britain has realized yet again it cannot win agaist the Germans on the continent and must withdraw to survive

It is proverbial among knowledgable Germans that “the Americans own everything”.

Under Hitler, Germany tried to reenact the Euro genocidal conquest of the American continent with Poland and USSR as her “frontier”. USA and Britain prevented this. Now Germany, chastened, tries once again to imitate America but this time by aping American masters in the arts of financial imperialism. Quick learners, those Germans.

To make China able to act as a counterweight to the Soviet Union, successive US governments since Nixon have allowed the build up of China's economy and industry at the West's expense economy Now China buys capital goods from Germany for equipping their massive economies-of-scale factories. China has a 200 billion trade imbalance with the US and instead of buying the advanced technology products of America it is spending money on replacing the US as no 1 in technology. China thinks it can buy a few billion in agricultural products from Trump's swing states and the US will be happy. Not a chance, China has got too strong; the free ride is over.

What about theological literalism? There are different ways of understanding Holy Texts. You can treat them as literally true (the earth was created in 6 days = 144 hours). You can also treat a Holy Text as a metaphor - God speaking to humanity in a way that humanity can unerstand (there's no reason to think that a 'day' for God is 24 human hours, a day for an omniscient all-powerful being could be millions and millions of years.

Islam has been stuck in the former school for about a thousand years which constricts intellectual life because nothing that seems to conflict with the text can be discovered or acknowledged.

When muslims societies were drifting apart and local varietes of Islam there was more tolerance for the occasional intellectual non-conformist but the ongoing global Sunni conversion toward Saudi salafist norms means intellectual stagnation as natural human competitiveness is channeled into conformity to the letter of the law - who can apply the koran to their daily life in the most painstaking way possible.

This is only reinforced by the alienation many muslims feel when confronted with the technological superiority of the West (and far East) and the reaction is doubling down on backwards dysfunctional behaviors.

    A well reasoned comment.

Spending all one’s intellectual energy reflecting on how novel, modern developments jive with hand-me-down strictures from one’s bronze aged, herding ancestors does not a progressive society make.

Until some Jews intermarried with Europeans, they were stuck on the same treadmill–as many of them (those who didn’t intermarry) still are.

It doesn’t surprise me in the least that the early colonists struggled to survive in a land in which they could not immediately enjoy a reliable yield of crops. All the Indians had to do to exterminate them was starve them to death by killing their free-grazing cows, pigs, chickens and ducks and trample their vegetable gardens underfoot (which makes the slaughter of the buffalo of the Great Plains a sort of revenge, I suppose).

So, contrary to the opinions of “historians” cited by Lawler above, I must disagree with the notion that the colonists didn’t have the requisite skills to survive and were therefore somehow helpless babes–a fairly common critique gleefully offered up by the Left (their intention being to make the whites appear not merely as merciless exploiters, but incompetent boobs as well–as usual, the Left tries to have it both ways).

It is generally a mistake to “misunderestimate” the capabilities of persons in the past. Whenever I encounter this argument I doubt the proponent’s capacity to muster anything more worth listening to. Just because the lifestyle of our forebears is a mystery to us doesn’t mean that it was a mystery to them.

Lawler is obsessed with suggesting that the whites genetically merged with native Indians because to acknowledge that the natives slaughtered the white settlers would be to admit that they were not the multi-cultural, diversity-loving, peaceful, children-of-the-Garden phantasm that Liberals imagine. It would mean seeing them as blood-thirsty savages defending their turf in the most nationalistic fashion imaginable.

Yeah, but in a world of limited resources, any coexistence is going to have a level of uneasiness; at some point it comes down to you or the other guy. Some people embrace this ethos sooner that others.

The modern West is a little slow to acknowledge the existence of a scramble for resources, choosing to think that cooperation and innovation will make room for any and all who show up on the planet.

“The modern West is a little slow to acknowledge the existence of a scramble for resources, choosing to think that cooperation and innovation will make room for any and all who show up on the planet.”

    So true.

Liberals don’t make stuff so they don’t have any appreciation for how much intellectual and manual labor is involved in transforming raw materials into finished products of civilization. For them, the stuff just “manifests” and will continue to do so in unlimited quantities forever. Empathy, their highest virtue, means sharing that bounty with everyone in the world less fortunate than they are, (except of course, the deplorable lower class whites in America who are expected to move over and welcome their competition). So while e.g. the Jews are allowed to threaten the world with annihilation if their existence is itself threatened, Liberals demand that the American white working class go quietly into the night.

It brings to mind the Samson Option, which isn't just a rational use of violence for political aims, but a vengeful attack against third parties and even the entire world:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson_option

Rosenbaum writes in his 2012 book How the End Begins: The Road to a Nuclear World War III that, in his opinion, in the "aftermath of a second Holocaust", Israel could "bring down the pillars of the world (attack Moscow and European capitals for instance)" as well as the "holy places of Islam." He writes that "abandonment of proportionality is the essence" of the Samson Option[dubious – discuss].[29]

In 2003, a military historian, Martin van Creveld, thought that the Al-Aqsa Intifada then in progress threatened Israel's existence.[30] Van Creveld was quoted in David Hirst's The Gun and the Olive Branch (2003) as saying:

We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: 'Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.' I consider it all hopeless at this point. We shall have to try to prevent things from coming to that, if at all possible. Our armed forces, however, are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.[31]

    ...

In 2012, in response to Günter Grass's poem "Was gesagt werden muss" ("What Must Be Said") which criticized Israel's nuclear weapons program, Israeli poet and Holocaust survivor Itamar Yaoz-Kest published a poem entitled "The Right to Exist: a Poem-Letter to the German Author" which addresses Grass by name. It contains the line: "If you force us yet again to descend from the face of the Earth to the depths of the Earth — let the Earth roll toward the Nothingness." Jerusalem Post journalist Gil Ronen saw this poem as referring to the Samson Option, which he described as the strategy of using Israel's nuclear weapons, "taking out Israel's enemies with it, possibly causing irreparable damage to the entire world."[33]

The Samson option just demonstrates the hollow core of nihilism that is at the center of Judaism. The narcissistic Jew cannot imagine a world in which he doesn’t exist or rather, a world without him shall not be allowed to exist. At the center of every Jewish act is this irreducible self interest and when the Jew imagines a world in which his self interest ceases to exist then, for him, the world itself no longer deserves to exist. This is why the Jew is so intractable, cannot be reasoned with, cannot be bargained with.

  • A recent talking point for why it's okay to cast black actors as ancient Greeks in BBC series about the Trojan War is that it's anthropologically no further off than casting English actors. But do Brits really look all that different from Greeks? I'm reminded of this 2016 article in the Guardian by the fine...
  • If the Chinese want to stage a Shakespearean drama then we would expect them to cast Chinese actors in all the roles. The audience would have no problem in accepting this as an authentic presentation of a drama with universal human meaning in local garb. What would strike us and the audience as a discordant note is if in the midst of this, an African pygmy were cast as Hamlet.

Why? Because the essence of the theater is illusion. That’s why the Greek proscenium arch featured marble masks depicting a crying and a laughing face. Illusion. Masks and makeup. We are not supposed to see the actor as who he is in real life. We are supposed to be entering a different dimension. So, if Hollywood wants to cast a black actor in the role of Hamlet in a drama that is to be presented to a white audience then he should wear makeup to disguise his brown color. Likewise, if presented to a black audience, a white actor should be made-up to appear as a black. Otherwise, the illusion is lost and life outside the magic circle intrudes. A drama becomes a hectoring essay.

If you ever have the opportunity to attend a play presented in the theater located at the base of the cliff below the Parthenon, with the sun set providing the backdrop, you will find yourself inescapably drawn into the magic of the moment and the notion that you are entering sacred space and time. The feeling of entering a zone apart from the daily grind of the city is inescapable. But this feeling of being in a place apart from the quotidian is easy to miss when attending a theater at the local mall. Our problem today is that we don’t mark off the extraordinary with special rituals and ceremonies.

For the ancient Greeks, attending a dramatic presentation involved a entering a consecrated, sacred space. This phenomenon was studied by Nietzsche among others. Some of that drama is still present today in the expectant hush that follows the dimming of the lights but it is dissipated by the intrusion of commercials for popcorn and upcoming attractions and the like. As in most other areas, commercialism has destroyed the Sacred in our modern life.

    How to be David.

I made a sling like that and practiced till I got pretty good at it (in a gravel pit). It was fun. And, you can really put some mustard on a rock with one of those things. But you don’t twirl it over your head, You swing it like a softball pitcher delivers, underhanded. A 360 degrees swing begun with the rock dangling like a pendulum at your side then you loop de loop it along side your body clockwise (from the thrower’s persective) if you’re right handed.

It’s not that hard really. The end of one string you lasso around your middle finger. You hold the end of the other string pinched between thumb and forefinger. At the appropriate moment you release this end which allows the pouch to open, thereby releasing the projectile. The pouch needs to be just baggy enough to keep the rock from falling out when the sling is hanging by your side. Not too deep or it will hold on to the rock for too long. Once you start the swing, centrifugal force keeps the rock in the sling.

You will be amazed at the distance you can get with a sling.

If there's an earthquake in the middle of the night and your shed collapses, it tends to be less of a thing than if your dwelling collapses on you whilst you sleep... I'm sure there are other reasons, but that has to be at least part of it.

A stick-built framed house or shed, tiny or big, held together as it is with metal pins at the joints is very resistant to catastrophic damage by earthquake. Generally, they don’t collapse, bend but don’t break, with the sticks pivoting about the joints as they do. Persons in such homes survive while people in unreinforced masonry homes are found crushed in the rubble, which is why earthquakes result in high death tolls in places with inadequate or unenforced building standards such as Latin America.

The circumspection (pragmatism?) which necessarily attended Fred's time as a successful journalist still hovers over his shoulder as he writes here.

You have to form your sentences extremely carefully lest you step over the line which marks you as an anti-Semite - a ranting racist: your words thereby discounted. Now Israel's (and of course Netanyahu's) behavior has become so outrageous of late that none but the most extreme zealots can possibly defend it: it is astounding that so many of these still exist. Therefore it's increasingly possible to 'criticize Israel' and not become a known Nazi - although your name will probably appear on a list somewhere.

What we can say is that Jewish community encompasses more than its fair share of the above zealots - and it has seemingly always done so - eventually, through their excesses and the unwillingness of their fellows to renounce them, bringing down yet another holocaust.

This pattern has been repeated too many times not to happen again.

They’ve been such a model minority for so long and we’ve come to expect so much from them that we subconsciously hold them to a higher standard than any other group in our society. They are victims of their own success. Any deviation, no matter how trivial, from the stereotype of perfection we’ve come to associate with them, calls attention to itself and we pounce mercilessly on the transgressor. And for what? For just being a fallible human like the rest of us.

But they soldier bravely on, taking comfort in their Christ-like, all-encompassing wisdom and compassion for us, their inferiors, with the thought that “This too shall pass”.

You are right that talk is cheap. In fact talk is FREE, over the air-waves at least.

Caregivers and bystanders aside, LOTS more talk comes out of the idiot box TV than all the live people combined, if it's left on during most waking hours, as it is for many families. I think the situation would be much worse for a poor family, or at least the usual one-parent latchkey-kid one.

The kids are worse off hearing MORE words, if those words come from that idiot box. Do you really want your kid speaking like Megan Kelly or James Carville? It'd be better if they are seen and not heard, as in the old days.

I went to grade and high school with black girls and boys and I can say, anecdotally of course, that they never seemed to be at a loss for words. They’re the gabbiest people you will ever meet. Raucous chatter and lunch room hilarity.

It was fascinating to watch them square off and verbally spar in grade school, trading insults like modern rappers. The teacher would try to rein them in but once they got rolling the match wouldn’t stop until one of them was stung to silence by the other’s barb and their fellow black’s partisan hooting. Fascinating stuff. A subject worthy of an Anthropology PhD dissertation.

Being in the vanguard means, by definition, that the majority won’t be able to see clearly what you see, still less will they understand your motives and plan of action. Being somewhat out of step with the times has been the fate of the advanced guard everywhere.

“Are you of the opinion that your sacred elected representatives give two shits about your 401k?”

Yes, I am of that opinion; but not because I believe that they care about me personally. They learned a lesson from the bankruptcy of Germany’s middle class during the 1920-1930′s.

    From GlobalSecurity.org

“From the prosperity of the empire during the Wilhelmine era (1890-1914), Germany plunged into World War I, a war it was to lose and one that spawned many of the economic crises that would destroy the successor Weimar Republic (1918-33). Even the British economist John Maynard Keynes denounced the 1919 Treaty of Versailles as ruinous to German and global prosperity. The war and the treaty were followed by the Great Inflation of the early 1920s that wreaked havoc on Germany’s social structure and political stability. During that inflation, the value of the nation’s currency, the Reichsmark, collapsed from 8.9 per US$1 in 1918 to 4.2 trillion per US$1 by November 1923. Then, after a brief period of prosperity during the mid-1920s, came the Great Depression, which destroyed what remained of the German middle class and paved the way for the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler.

Had it not been for the economic collapse that began with the Wall Street stock market crash of October 1929, Hitler probably would not have come to power. The Great Depression hit Germany hard because the German economy’s well-being depended on short-term loans from the United States. Once these loans were recalled, Germany was devastated. Unemployment went from 8.5 percent in 1929 to 14 percent in 1930, to 21.9 percent in 1931, and, at its peak, to 29.9 percent in 1932. Compounding the effects of the Depression were the drastic economic measures taken by Center Party politician Heinrich Brüning, who served as chancellor from March 1930 until the end of May 1932. Brüning’s budget cuts were designed to cause so much misery that the Allies would excuse Germany from making any further reparations payments. In this at least, Brüning succeeded. United States president Herbert Hoover declared a “reparations moratorium” in 1932. In the meantime, the Depression deepened, and social discontent intensified to the point that Germany seemed on the verge of civil war. In times of desperation, voters are ready for extreme solutions, and the NSDAP exploited the situation.

Hitler’s rise to power in Germany was about as directly Depression-related as any historical event can be. German industrial unemployment was even worse than in the United States.”

They should remake 40 Year Old Virgin and rather than being quite a sweet and affecting if degenerate comedy that sympathised with the main character and his struggles, it could be a horror story where the eponymous virgin is a creepy, malevolent freak who eventually gets hunted down by the chick from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as played by Ellen Pao.

Amd while doing that they could make a movie where the bad guy is homeless, or disabled or just the Elephant Man. Then again, maybe Ellen really is implying that the tech company should hire some prostitutes - obviously that is what this incel lot should do for themselves. It is the traditional remedy for acute male sexual anxiety.

“maybe Ellen really is implying that the tech company should hire some prostitutes”

Maybe Ellen should offer herself up on the altar of inclusion. After all, if that woman were truly interested in being a social worker, then she would voluntarily give herself whole heartedly to any guy out there who isn’t getting or can’t get laid. Tiny says “No wonder white women are in dreading it preferring Men of Color”.

    But do they really?

This from Ron Paul’s site….(my bold)

    “November 20, 2013

The data shown above come from the Facebook dating app, Are You Interested (AYI), which works like this: Users in search of someone for a date or for sex flip through profiles of other users and, for each one, click either “yes” (I like what I see) or “skip” (show me the next profile). When the answer is “yes,” the other user is notified and has the opportunity to respond. It’s very similar to another dating app, Tinder.

The graphic shows what percentage of people responded to a “yes,” based on the gender and ethnicity of both parties (the data are only for opposite-sex pairs of people). Unsurprisingly, most “yes’s” go unanswered, but there are patterns: For example, Asian women responded to white men who “yessed” them 7.8% of the time, more often than they responded to any other race. On the other hand, white men responded to black women 8.5% of the time—less often than for white, Latino, or Asian women. In general, men responded to women about three times as often as women responded to men.

Unfortunately the data reveal winners and losers. All men except Asians preferred Asian women, while all except black women preferred white men. And both black men and black women got the lowest response rates for their respective genders.

Perhaps most surprising is that among men, all racial groups preferred another race over their own.

AYI analyzed some 2.4 million heterosexual interactions—meaning every time a user clicked either “yes” or “skip”—to come up with these statistics. Its users skew older than Tinder’s—about two-thirds of AYI users are older than 35, according to a spokesperson.”

White women responded most to white men and least to black men. In fact, black men got the lowest response from women of all races except black women.

Here’s the link if you want to see the graphics.

I would have preferred they had gotten rid of the Boy Scouts entirely.

Lets face it, the whole purpose of the Scouts is to take young boys out in the woods and toughen them up, ultimately as preparation to be soldiers. It teaches them to have an adversarial relationship to nature, to want to conquer it. It favors machismo as well as groupthink and submission, a dangerous combination.

Of course abuse has been rampant in the Scouts, just like in the military, or any other situation where you have a power dynamic and a bunch of vulnerable young men at the mercy of all-powerful commanders.

Enough of bundling kids off to the wilderness to learn how to be tough and unfeeling. If we want a better society, we need to teach our children to be sensitive, caring and responsible from a young age. This is a step in the right direction.

Why don't boys and girls forgo the Scouts and participate in 4-H?

You might think it is a hayseed version of the Scouts, but it has always welcomed both boys and girls while not being embarrassed by traditional gender interests. Instead of make-work Merit Badges, 4-H involves children in activites marking the passage into the adult world such as raising a calf, planting a crop, baking a cake, sewing a dress, or rebuilding an engine.

Dare I suggest that a Citizenship project in 4-H could involve participating in the "conversation" with iSteve? https://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/projects

    “Instead of make-work Merit Badges…”

Maybe things have changed, but when I was a scout I earned merit badges that taught me how to canoe, row, shoot a 22, shoot a bow, tie half a dozen useful knots, pitch a tent and tarp, build a fire, swim, lifeguard, navigate with a compass and topo map etc. I guess I’m a weird guy because I don’t regard them as make-work and still enjoy doing those things.

Nothing against the 4-H, it’s commendable, but they have a different emphasis compared to scouting.

Great comment. I thought she was funny too. Comedians have a saying that a joke will wound according to the truth content. Those jokes wounded deeply. Comedy should be a blood sport and needs to be enjoyed live as both the context and dynamics are altered when televised.

His crimes include ‘assault with a deadly weapon’ and ‘having sex in public’, indicating extremely low future-orientation. An arrest per month in 2015, and now two in six months.

The Dems do not expect to find any incriminating evidence that will tie Trump to Moscow

Trump already is "tied to Moscow." Just like Capone was 'tied to murder(s).' "Incriminating evidence" was not what put the Chicago mobster in 'the joint' though. It was his tax problem. What will prevent Trump from a second term? How would I know? It could be a plethora of charges. But it's going to happen if he doesn't just resign on his own. So Trump either resigns, is impeached, or faces a Republican challenger (Niki). Mueller will take the easiest route to ridding the Executive Dept. of DJT.
Anybody who doesn't expect Sater, Manafort, Cohen, et al. to flip is living in a dream world. The DNC suit is the least of the GOP's problems.

I believe that he has come to the realization that even a Manhattan real estate developer is a choirboy compared to the vile scum who occupy the snakepit that is D.C. politics. Having to associate–even as an adversary–with the Clinton and Obama claque is so toxic that it isn’t worth the price of playing the game.

I believe that Trump has a certain sense of dignity which is affronted by even having to deal with the likes of Hillary’s people–sort of like being accosted by a bleary-eyed, toothless drunk who, while trying to shake you down on the public sidewalk, spits on your shirtfront.
