From The Atlantic: Okay, but the lengthy text analyzing the reasons behind Trump's surprise victory doesn't include the text string "immigra" ... On the other hand, the article's own graph is clear on the immigration issue's priority: To update James Carville's good advice to Bill Clinton in 1992: "It's the immigration, stupid." Brownstein does offer...
  • @Larry, San Francisco
I think if Trump campaigns in the black community against immigration I bet he could get over 40% of black men voting for him (I don't think they like Hilary much and his style is certainly not unappealing to the urban set) and maybe 15% to 20% of the women.

That was my hope to begin with, but after a few conversations with people I know within the black community (the real black community, not black elites) I have to say I don’t see that happening. They’ve completely fallen for the ‘Donald Trump is Hitler’ meme – especially after the KKK stuff, since the KKK still features prominently in the urban imagination – and I don’t see more than the 10% who are already Republican voting for the Donald after the beating he’s taken in the media. Black Twitter confirms that impression. It’s a shame. On the other hand, black Republicans really, really like Donald Trump.

Well, there are some polls (linked by Drudge) showing Trump drawing upwards of 15% of the black vote. That total alone is enough to send BET and other black popular talk show leaders into a huff. If Trump can get 15-20% of the black vote, that's a major chunk of votes taken away from Hillary.

Honestly, no GOP candidate has gotten above like, 11-12% of the black vote since Eisenhower. That is a major deal to get 15-20% of the black vote. Almost as impressive as carrying ca.70% of the total white vote.

Also remember, blacks tend to watch reality TV as much as anybody. Some actually watched the Apprentice and would've seen several black celebs/guests/etc prominently featured on the show over the years. So the idea that Trump is racist simply won't wash as strong as it has over other past GOP candidates.

  • Brandeis historian David Hackett Fischer's 1989 book Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America is perhaps the most influential in recent American historiography. If you've been meaning to read it but haven't yet gotten around to its 900 pages, Scott Alexander provides a lively synopsis at SlateStarCodex.com that is at least an order of magnitude...
  • In Hackett Fischer’s scheme, Trump’s native New York City does not belong to any of the four major English traditions. It is supposed to have its own Dutch-influenced culture. This is how he describes it:

“This was a very conservative culture. Its old-fashioned Dutch dialect survived even into the mid-nineteenth century…Settlement patterns retained a special character, with homes built in distinctive irregular clusters around a reformed church. Rates of internal migration were exceptionally low, and Dutch households had a different demographic profile from those of English neighbors, with fewer children and more slaves…The culture developed its own special ways of dealing with other ethnic groups. It combined formal toleration, social distance and inequality in high degree. The result was an ethnic pluralism that became more atomistic than in the Delaware Valley and more hierarchical than in New England. The peculiar texture of life in New York City today still preserves qualities which existed in seventeenth-century New Amsterdam–and Old Amsterdam as well.” (817).

Later, in an overview of the existing regions circa 1988, he describes what he calls Greater New York — a region which is supposed to be distinct from Greater New England and Midland America — as “small in area but 10 percent of the national population, and a very heavy infusion of middle European and Jewish culture grafted onto the old Dutch root.” (887)

So if Hackett Fischer’s theory that Americans tend to identify in the first instance with the region in which they were reared rather than with the culture of their parents is correct, Trump should exhibit the characteristics of a person reared in a Dutch culture with white ethnic and Jewish traits grafted on.

  • As the disastrousness of Chancellor Merkel's decision last August to invite in a million Muslim mob becomes ever more obvious, globalist grandees like George Soros and John McCain have been casting about for an opportunity to blame Vladimir Putin. But it's increasingly clear that Dr. Merkel instead handed power to Putin's Turkish counterpart and rival,...
  • @NOTA
My not all that informed impression is that, as Ergodan's party has lost popularity, he has been increasingly hammering dissent at home, blocking social media, etc. Were I Turkish, I'd find the censorship and other governmental behavior around the terrorist attack on the opposition party a few months back scary as hell.

I imagine he’s also flexing his newfound muscles and seeing how far it’ll get him.

  • From Medium: Can a Dress Shirt Be Racist? by Moises Velasquez-Manoff A startup finds that asking for certain data improves the fit of its clothes — and lands the company in a cultural minefield. In 2008, an entrepreneur named Seph Skerritt was frustrated with the way he shopped for clothes. Then a student at MIT’s Sloan School...
  • @jJay

Why not improve on that concept, he wondered, with an online service that fitted your shirts by asking you questions, and then mailed you the garments?

Those "questions", I assume, are related to measurements - neck circumference, arm length, girth about about the shoulders and abdomen, etc.

He noticed an odd pattern. In that first batch of 30, the shirts fit best on testers who were Caucasians.

So... if my first assumption is correct, then I have to conclude that Caucasians are better at taking measurements than other racial groups. I am a bit surprised that Asians cannot measure as well as woodies.

Well, later in the article it’s noted that various groups lie about similar things. I imagine Asians inflated their chest and arm circumference measurements.

  • In 2012-2013, the Republican Brain Trust came up with a great idea: the salvation of the GOP would be to team up with the Democrats to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. If you can't trust Chuck Schumer to save the Republican Party for you, who can you trust? Everybody agreed that the the perfect face...

Along the same lines I've come to see two types of immigrants, those who view immigration as a way to help their fellow co-ethnics and those who immediately reject allegiance to their co-ethnics and transfer their allegiance to America. The former are in favor of more immigration, of comprehensive immigration reform and want America to accommodate them. The latter are thankful to America for admitting them, have America's back with respect to stopping immigration, reducing it, and deporting illegals. The former group work to keep their culture alive, socialize/ghettoize into ethnic enclaves. The latter try their darnedest to escape the ethnic enclaves, they name their kids with good old American names, some Americanize/Anglicanize their names in order to fit in better. The former often come here because they want to better their financial prospects. The latter come here because they want to be Americans, like the people they read about in the news, in novels, see in movies or on TV in their native land - they want to be JR Ewing.

The former seem to constitute about 99% of immigrants. I've only known a few who are immigrants who have cast their lot with the people who invited them here and feel that their allegiance is owed towards those who want to keep America as America.

Rubio has too deep a public record demonstrating that he's in the former group. His whole damn identity, right down to the Rainbow Picture where he stood with Scott & Haley, is that he's a Cuban-American, intent on helping Hispanics in America and he has no damn interest in preserving and championing the historical American white identity.

In a who, whom contest, Rubio is championing for people who want to minimize white identity and influence in America and that's why he signed up to be the puppet for the Republican Hispanic Strategy. He wouldn't be credible and this would, rightly, be seen as another convenient flip-flop because his heart, and identity, simply isn't in it.

If immigrants who throw in their lot with their adoptive nation appear so rare, it’s probably mostly a consequence of the fact that Hispanics make up such a large percentage of the immigrant population in the US. I’ve encountered a surprising number of Trump supporters among Eastern European immigrants, for instance. Okay, okay, I guess that’s not actually surprising. Asian immigrants are pretty good about assimilation, too!

With the Mexicans it all feels quite different though. It’s honestly like Mexico has basically over a sizeable portion of the United States and is now trying to hijack its government. Weird stuff. Can we not be run by agents of foreign polities anymore, please?

Large portions of the southwestern United States were once Mexico--no portion of the United States was ever eastern European. That's not the whole answer, but don't overlook irredentism as a factor.

It really depends on where these Asians end up. Most major metropolitan areas in the US have Chinatown, Japantown, Koreatown, etc. There are individual churches that identify by ethnicity. In my hometown, there are Korean Baptist/Methodist (I don't remember which it is) churches. The Hmong in Michigan have not assimilated at all, as evidenced in ¡Adios America!

    If wishes were horses.

As someone who vacillates between Trump and Cruz, but is increasingly leaning toward Cruz, I'd like an explanation of how Trump intends to achieve the three goals you elaborated above. Furthermore, must one be "a bombastic asshole" to achieve such goals? Or is it just a calculated schtick to fire up angry blue collar whites? Or perhaps the rantings of a desperately insecure billionaire who craves mass adulation and validation?

or with an army behind him, he became vicious.

Any moron or thug can be "vicious" with an army behind him. Just ask all those Latin American or African dictators. It's the ones with armies behind them who can be judicious, deliberate, even-tempered, and, yes, magnanimous who build lasting legacies and bequeath societies worth living for their successors.

The key thing to keep in mind re: reliability of Donald Trump, is that the man is in over his head. He has to know that he does not have the resources or background to staff the departments and agencies, and that he will need to rely on someone with more political experience to do so. To date, he has relied extensively on the Senator from Alabama in all things policy (recently hiring top Sessions man Stephen Miller as his senior policy advisor). I suspect that would continue in a Trump administration, at least with respect to the policy areas where Donald hasn’t indicated that he would take a stance at odds with those favored by people like Sessions (e.g. in foreign policy). In those areas, I don’t have a sense as to what path he would actually take.

With Cruz, it is hard not to walk away with the impression that the policy issue he is most passionate about is reigning in the administrative state. That makes sense for a guy who came up through the conservative legal movement. But I don’t see the evidence that he really understands why anyone would be particularly worried about immigration. I do understand the argument for Cruz that nominating Trump might be too risky, but fortune favors the bold.

  • @tbraton
I noticed after the debate that Trump was quite friendly with Christie. I am just guessing, but I think they struck a deal. If you noticed, Christie did not attack Trump during the debate. I think Christie is smart enough to read the polls (NH was considered his best shot, and he is lagging rather than leading) and realize that he won't be getting the nomination and that there is a very good chance Trump will be the nominee. I think the deal is that President Trump will nominate Christie for Attorney General. I thought earlier that there was a chance that Cruz might get that post, but I think Trump got pissed at Cruz's attacks on him. He went out of his way to make it clear that Cruz won't be his VP choice (because of the "uncertainty" created by his "Canadian citizenship"). So, in exchange for attacking Rubio, Christie got promised the AG spot. Rubio got exposed as the total lightweight I figured he was back in 2010 when I refused to vote for him for U.S. Senate. Very glib but very shallow.

BTW I am not shallow at all, but I would vote for Trump just so we can have Melania as First Lady. She really is a lovely woman. But then I recently came across a picture of Donald Trump in his mid 30's to early 40's, and I was stunned by how handsome he was as a younger man. I guess I just wasn't paying attention all those years.

“Hey Chris, launch this attack on Marco Rubio in this primary debate and I will make you Attorney General of the United States!”

I don’t think that’s adequate consideration for Donald, and a certain Senator from Alabama probably has a good claim to the AG spot in a Trump administration, should he wish for it. I suspect the Governor from New Jersey was just trying to prevent establishment consolidation around Rubio, which would end his campaign. The fact that he doesn’t have a path to the nomination in any case is sort of beside the point: he has to try to make some kind of run, and he can’t do it if Rubio is bleeding every other neoconservative candidate.

Cruz isn’t the kind of guy you want in the AG spot. He is too ambitious and conniving to be trusted with the investigative resources of the United States, and he is committed to a dogmatic Federalist Society vision of constitutional law that is hostile to the whole structure of the modern American administrative state. President Trump doesn’t want to have to worry about that guy looking over his shoulder, nor does he want to deal with Cruz objecting to his policies on spurious constitutional grounds.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion, but I think Sessions would be much more useful to President Trump in the Senate pushing Trump's immigration plan than as AG. We'll see. I agree with your observations about Cruz, but I would add that I think Trump now dislikes Cruz for his attacks on Trump, whereas before he was willing to tolerate him. Removing Cruz from the Senate would just create another opportunity for the Democrats to pick up that seat in the 2018 election. If Julian Castro does become Hillary's running mate (as is widely speculated) and the ticket loses, Castro might gain enough press coverage to make him a threat for that Senate seat in 2018. I would rather have Cruz defending that seat against a possible Castro run.

Look at how liberals are acting. They seem to be able to reconcile being outright totalitarians, in line with their beliefs and values, and doing so in public and yet their opponents have to keep their heads down and keep their beliefs and values secret.

It's one thing to have an unpopular belief, say worshiping Stalin and the Gulags, and so keeping quiet for fear of ostracism, but when students are scared to stand up for free speech on a college campus because they believe that this will impact their careers, this implies that they believe that the larger world sees their belief as obnoxious and the beliefs of liberal zealots to be mainstream.

Look at the accolades directed at the Mizzou student journalist for standing his ground. If some Yale coward stood up in that "encounter session" and denounced the Maoists and this was caught on camera, I would think that future employers doing Google searches on this student would see this a a resume enhancer. This issue really boils down to how much shit students are willing to swallow in order to live a peaceful life and liberals show us that they have no compunctions against living true to their principles, so to paraphrase Mark Steyn, the future belongs to those who stand up for their principles. If it's too much of a burden to denounce Maoists, then the future will see continuing erosion of free speech rights. Who knows, one of those Maoists could end up on the Supreme Court - look at Sotomayor who appears to be fully on board with the "black lives matter" protests.

In Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU) is noisily criticizing Merkel. CSU is the “sister party” to Merkel’s CDU but fields candidate only in its home state where the CDU is not present. In theory, as a member of Merkel’s coalition government, they could withdraw from the coalition and call for new elections. In practice, it won’t happen.

CDU + SPD would still have a huge majority. Also, I very much doubt they'd want to "go nuclear" and potentially destroy their party (if CDU runs candidates against them in Bavaria).

Factions within the SPD are now starting to get freaked out by this whole thing also. People (including Germans) often overestimate the Germans’ ability to cope with cultural change.

"Note the amount of self-deportations far exceeded the number of apprehensions."

This point is never acknowledged by the nitwits saying we could never deport 11 million. They didn't all come here on the same day, we don't have to send them home on the same day. If a combo of deportation and self-deportation thinned the herd by half, I'd be doing handsprings on my front yard.

As always, this. During the worst of the recession didn’t net immigration approach zero or something? The second you eliminate economic incentives to stay in the United States (by, say, actually enforcing employment laws), a huge proportion of Mexicans et al. here illegally will be back over the border in half a second flat. What gets overlooked in this whole discussion is that the communities illegal immigrants live in in the US are basically indistinguishable from their communities back home. Whether you live in Texas or in Mexico, it doesn’t really make a difference if you’re Jose Garcia. It’s all Mexico to you anyway.
