From the Washington Post: In the past, Hollywood figures could get away with more diversity of opinion. Considering the 1939 movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." The star (Jimmy Stewart), director (Frank Capra), and mogul (Harry Cohn) were all Republicans, while the screenwriter (Sidney Buchman) was a Stalinist. But by the 1960s or so, Hollywood...

It's too early to say, but as far as sitcoms go, there's some interesting stuff going on in the new TV reboot of the movie Heathers:

    https://youtu.be/Ct_lrDNvxoA

This is weirdly fresh in the way it inverts and disrespects the cult classic original. Probably gonna be lots of Gen-X/millennial butt hurt expressed.
The truth is that in modern Weimerica the conservative Heathers would end up being the picked on odd balls.
Kinda shocked to see the fat activist punk as the nasty bully, and the vapid school board as catty homos.
I predict this will crash and burn, but in 10 years it will be some beloved Gen Z cult thing as they’re all growing up being annoyed by millenial libtards.

  • From the New York Times: Women’s Accusations Follow James Franco After Golden Globes By DAVE ITZKOFF JAN. 11, 2018 For the actor and filmmaker James Franco, Sunday’s Golden Globes victory for his performance in “The Disaster Artist” was meant to propel him into Hollywood’s annual awards season with a shot at an Oscar nomination later...
  • Franco’s statement on the matter is pretty lulzy. As it is the CUURENT YEAR he has to #listentoher and thank her for #speakingout!, but also deny he would do these sexist things.
What’s even more hilarious is that Franco was all set to direct and star in a movie on the girly pickup book “The Game,” with him playing PUA guru Mystery and his buddy Rogan as the schlubby nerd writer he fashions into a jerk woman can be attracted to.
Looks like those plans are being shelved!

  • "The Disaster Artist" is actor/director James Franco's fairly good movie about the making of a belovedly bad movie called "The Room" that has achieved cult status and nurtured a bunch of "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-type customs among audiences at midnight movies, such as throwing plastic spoons at the screen. Franco plays the international man of...
  • The rumor is he illegally imported “flawed” i.e. mistakenly sewn jeans straight from the alleys behind Asian sweatshops to America. He started with a kiosk and moved to a few crappy strip mall outlets. The company/store was called American Street Fashion. Made a mint over a decade before NAFTA allowed big retailers to copy his strategy.
Always thought he had some slight autism. He desperately wanted to be an actor, so he ripped off a bunch of scenes from serious dramatic films without understanding them or humans. The Room is entertaining as it’s like peering into a parallel universe where God has autistic logic.

  • I'm shocked, shocked to hear that Bryan Singer, director of Kevin Spacey's The Usual Suspects, the extremely metaphorical-sounding Apt Pupil, and several X-Men films, is having trouble. From the Hollywood Reporter: Comedian Matt Oswalt tweeted:
  • @Buzz Mohawk
It's too late to come for Allen Ginsberg.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fR2qHmxyjQ

Just completed reading the William S. Burroughs bio “Call me Burroughs” from the library. Mainly recognise the name from it being branded about by David Bowie/Kurt Cobain as the main influence on their enigmatic cutup lyrics. There are excerpts from B’s truly vile letters to Ginsberg detailing his gay sex tourism in the middle east and G replying with his own sick tales in the states. The two of them should have been locked up.

  • Pixar's animated movie "Coco" about a boy in Mexico who visits the afterlife on the Day of the Dead is another nice effort from the Northern California studio. On the other hand, it's a little dull and repetitious: Did you know that Mexicans care a lot about their families? If not, you'll learn that from...
  • @njguy73

The story is about an entrepreneurial family of shoemakers who are the only family in Mexico, or maybe the world, who abhor any and all music, and their rebel little boy who, you’ll be shocked to learn, likes music.

I knew nothing about Coco before reading this. Then I read that paragraph. I thought, Mexican family, parents not into music, kid who is. Why does that sound familiar?

    Then it hit me.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0149921/

It was the plot of a 1958 cartoon from Walter Lantz Studios.

I’ve long had a theory that Pixar’s process is taking an old forgotten children’s film with a great premise, and sitting down with a football team of creative’s to re-dialogue it and add a few weepy scenes.
See the Christmas Toy for Toy Story.
Of course the real odd thing about Pixar is how Christian the top brass were in its creative heyday.

I’ve long had a theory that Pixar’s process is taking an old forgotten children’s film with a great premise, and sitting down with a football team of creative’s to re-dialogue it and add a few weepy scenes. See the Christmas Toy for Toy Story.

I've watched the original TOY STORY enough times with my kiddos (now it's too 'babyish' even for the youngest one *teardrop*) that eventually I started reading the credits and- holy cow!- did that one need some script-doctoring! Of course, when even 'ringer' Joss Whedon whiffs and you have to call in the Coen Brothers (the Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz of this little Hollywood sideline) to do the real clean-up hitting work, it's no wonder it was by far the wittiest and best written of all Pixar's films ("You are a toy! A child's play-thing!" "You are one sad, strange little man.")

Honestly, Pixar has had about as many whiffs as solid hits in my opinion. UP I found bizarre (the villain was a nonagenarian 30's pulp adventure-style explorer? For what reason other than having the showdown scene on an art deco Spruce Goose airplane?) . ZOOTOPIA was not just ideologically repulsive to me ("Hey, hey- only we bunnies get to call each other 'cute'!") but the noir crime elements scared a lot of kids including my youngest who could not finish watching itt. And CARS 2 was stupid, disjointed, and highly-offensive for a kids film, with a very drawn-out torture-to-death scene (even if it was just anthropomorphic cartoon cars getting/doing the business).

No thoughts on CARS 3? It's interesting because coming out when it did (2006, the doldrums of the Dumbya/Tamerlamer Presidency) it could be seen as a sort of olive branch by the Left Coast to Red State America (a movie about NASCAR and its fans that was almost wholly respectful and loving). In the latest one, though, the stale pale male hero of the series passes the baton to a vibrant Latina cartoon car. And because, as you say, anyone can get on social media exclaiming J’accuse

Okay, but is that really happening with, say, Weinstein?

Weinstein went down because of traditional reporting in the New York Times and the New Yorker got sources to go on record.

    Kevin Spacey accused on twitter
Ben Affleck ran his mouth virtue signaling and people posted old videos edited together on twitter
    Likewise that Kimmel guy
    Al Franklin accused on twitter
George H.W. Bush accused on instagram
    Matthew Weiner accused on twitter
Lockhart Steele accused in blog post
Now that Girls writer accused on twitter, Dunham defending him and getting destroyed on twitter for hypocrisy…
    …ummm, I’m probably missing a few.
Weinstein remains the outlier. We do know the NYT and New Yorker were sitting on stories for a while that young partial Jews Ronan Farrow and Megan Twohey had collected. I seem to recall twitter breaking that the info was collected and would probably be released. Maybe it would have been buried like every other time except for this revelation forcing the old media’s hand?

  • There is no plan behind this. I feel like the hysteria we see now could be appended to the end of that Jewish Century book, in a chapter called “It all falls apart.”
What exactly explains why this is happening now and not in the past? Two things: social media and diversity.
It’s mainly due to the rise of social media. Anyone can disseminate info (including accusations) and bypass the old media gatekeepers. A million people can comment and share something before the day’s news even begins and the old media merely plays catch-up now. You saw that with the video of Hillary passing out. Imagine in the early 90s if Sally Thot gets it in her head she was harassed by Sheckleburg the producer. She maybe gets as far as a sympathetic reporter, but the producer/network head/conglomerate board would shut it down every step of the way if the perp is a good Dem. Today she merely writes “j’accuse!” on his twitter account and his fans share it.
As far as diversity goes…most of the millennial “Jews” starting their careers in media today are the result of intermarriages. They don’t have the extreme ethnocentrism and clannishness of the previous generations working the media; they really do see feminism as a universal moral code for all and not just a weapon to use against enemies. Powerful Jews were uniquely privileged in that the media did everything in their power to protect them if they promoted leftism, but the deals off guys! You now get denounced by a chorus of hysterics if your a dirt bag.
The real shock with all this is seeing all these masters of the universe types who clawed their way to the top bowing and scraping and begging forgives. I can’t believe none of them laughed and said “Why the hell do you think I got into entertainment? To make art?!” Looks like the old establishment was only a rotten door that only needed a tiny kick to disintegrate.

Yup. Social media changed not only the rules of the game, but the game itself. People playing the old game, or by the old rules will lose out.

The easiest example is how Trump trolls the ankle-biting media--and they take his bait every time, thinking to themselves, "Oh, he's stepped in it this time--we've got him." And then tomorrow it's something else. Meanwhile the media is out of breath from chasing down yesterday's story, and like a caged squirrel, they get right back on the treadmill to nowhere.

And because, as you say, anyone can get on social media exclaiming J'accuse, the gatekeepers of days past can no longer control The Narrative. They can only reinforce it, as the prior media oligopoly is over--done--kaput. The resident business revenue model is clickbait.

And as was seen during the primaries, media couldn't get enough of Trump--he was a ratings bonanza freak show. But they thought they could take him down in the election, because The Narrative was Hillary as first female president. Trump didn't play by the old rules, or the old game.

American media is so obsessed with race and porn ("identity", "gender") that it did not occur them to apply dialectical, Marxist methodology to analyze social reality. Who was expropriating the surplus generated by the working class? Some is consumed by a noisy non-working parasite class and the rest goes to a fantastically wealthy technical entrepreneur class. Marx said that religion was the opium of the masses, that was in Victorian England, today in America synthetic opioids, identity and gender are the opium of the masses and the media is the pusher.

Ironically for Marx, the CURRENT YEAR’s masses can afford actual opium (well, its synthetic cousins).

Any thoughts on the whole “Obama considered gayness” and yet choose the “difficult” path of being straight reveal?

I hadn't seen that, thanks. Here is a quote from The Daily Caller:

“Three years later, Obama wrote somewhat elusively to his first intimate girlfriend that he had thought about and considered gayness, but ultimately had decided that a same-sex relationship would be less challenging and demanding than developing one with the opposite sex,” Garrow wrote. “But there is no doubting that Goldyn [gay prof at Occidental] gave eighteen-year-old Barry a vastly more positive and uplifting image of gay identity and self-confidence than he had known in Honolulu.”

    Two reactions, perhaps related:

    1. This is now at least 7 days old, and hasn't yet been picked up by the "mainstream press". It's almost like they don't know how to deal with it.

    2. Sort of takes the wind out of the sail that gayness is something innate and has nothing to do with socialization pressures (gay teachers was a big debate as late as the 1990s, as I recall).
    , @Peter Akuleyev
I've met people who went to high school with Obama. They described him as very heterosexual, and a huge pothead.
    , @AnotherDad
I don't know the guy, Obama comes across as simply effete and narcissistic. Those things together may seem kind of "gay" but are "independent variables".

I'll grant he doesn't come across as having quite the desire to grab a handful of tail that some presidents have had. He doesn't give the impression of a guy who bends the intern over the table in the back office.

But as far as I can tell what he enjoys is getting away from the wife to hit the golf course with some bro buddies and imagining he's about a 10x better athlete than he is. Both of those strike me as pretty typical straight guy--heck straight well-to-do black guy--behaviors.

My theory is universe wanted to draw attention to Hollywood’s idiocy…Obviously, La La Land would be the perfect winner. Coastal types can feel safe liking it, and its subject matter is not offensive to Middle America. Likewise, industry workers love that you can hear actual music and lyrics composed with some skill, and that the camera doesn’t endlessly shake like an epileptic filmed it. You can see composed shots and portrait lighting instead of environmental lighting and randomness. Hell, it even let the dress and set people coordinate as they didn’t digitally suck all the color out. Maybe yes, maybe no. It might be like the case of the missing 28 pages from the 9/11 report: they contain damning information that was freely available to anyone spending an hour digging on the internet.

We already know the US initiated and armed the Syrian insurgency groups leading to the Islamic State, and that the US sponsored the Libyan coup. The US openly supported the Arab Spring, which was an Islamic destabilization of established dictators more-or-less friendly to the US and more-or-less hostile to intense Islamists.

Nobody care about her personal relationship to Huma Abadin. Huma is completely tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, and was Hillary's closest adviser as Secretary of State. Huma openly had open access to intelligence and policy-making. We know this already: who cares about a personal relationship?

I think the only circumstances that might be actually damaging to Hillary would be a smoking gun on her relationship with the Clinton Foundation and its influence on State Department policy decisions. Another potentially damaging area is if there is clear evidence that Hillary was perfectly aware of security requirements and the unsecured nature of her email server. These issues have gotten some traction in the press already, and she might be vulnerable.
