The latest in our series of translations of Russian national-conservative intellectual Egor Kholmogorov. This massive opus, which will be published in two parts, is the closest thing there is to a condensed historiosophy of Kholmogorov's. Translated by Fluctuarius Argenteus Original: *** The modern Russian nation grew out of the Old Rus people, whose identity had...

At the same time, we can see the the sources of the artificial separation of the Little Russian and Belorussian branches of the Russian nation. The cultural “Ukrainophile” movement in Galicia, beyond the borders of the Russian Empire, evolves into a cohesive Ukrainian separatism with its own version of history, its own purpose-built language, and political claims to all of Southern Russia. On a smaller scale the same reorientation happened with Belorussians. In both cases, one can easily see the interests of rival nations and empires, mostly Poles and Austrians, attempting to convert a part of the Russian population into a buffer between them and the Russian ethnopolitical core.

This strikes me as a series of half-truths. He correctly states that Poles and Austrians had their interests and acted accordingly, but ignored that Russians also had their interests and acted according to those. There was indeed a separation of eastern Slavs from each other but he calls it "artificial" (as if, it would be natural for people separated for centuries and with massive differentiating foreign influences to remain similar to each other in the end).

Ultimately there were a people in the territory we now call Ukraine, with their own language, their own shared experiences, their own common descent. The local elites had various ideas about who they were, and the three neighboring powers sought to mould these ideas in correspondence with their own interests, each by promoting certain factions whose ideas were amenable to their interests, from amongst the local "nation-builders."

Austria, allied with Russia, wanted to reduce the power of the local Poles and to prevent the Polonization of the entire Galician population, so it promoted Russophile activists from among the Galicians. When Austrian relations with Russia soured, it switched to helping Ukrainophiles (many of whom were exiles from the Russian Empire). Russia, in order to limit the power of local Polish elites and stop the process of Polonization, initially supported anti-Polish Little Russian activists in their nation-building activities. Later it turned on them, tried to force them to become Great Russians, and in reaction most of them became anti-Russian Ukrainophiles.

Success seems to have ultimately rested on the story that most corresponded to reality. Ukrainians are neither Poles nor Great Russians, and efforts to turn them into either of those groups failed. The Russian state strangled the mostly realistic Little Russian movement, the Ukrainian one was left by default.

BTW Ukrainians were not unique in this. In the Baltics, Russia did for Estonians and Latvians what Austrians did for Ukrainians. Wishing to reduce the power of local German elites and perhaps prevent Germanization, Russia provided help to local Latvian and Estonian national activists. I wonder if Russia played a similar role in Finland vis a vis Swedish or German elites there. This does not, of course, mean that Latvia or Estonia (or Finland) are artificial nations created by Russia.

I wonder if Russia played a similar role in Finland vis a vis Swedish or German elites there.

Partially , Yes. Not very aggressively, though. During the late 19th century Russian authorities supported Finnish nationalists (so-called Fennomans) against largely Swedish-speaking old nobility and bureaucracy. Some prominent Fennoman leaders were trusted with significant government positions and even ennobled (J.V. Snellman, Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen, Eliel Soisalon-Soininen…). In return, many Finnish nationalists (so-called “Old Finns”) were rather conciliatory towards Russian government. Younger generation of Finnish nationalists ( “Young Finns”) was much more hostile towards perceived threat of Russification of autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland (1899-).

  • One of the growing myths about American history is that white Southerners in the late 1930s were in sympathy with Hitler, when that's the opposite of the truth. A few years ago, I read an article about the regional patterns in Congressional support in 1939-1940 for FDR's hard line against Germany. In my memory the...

    That's interesting.
Wikipedia claims there was a reconciliation after the slaughter of the Finnish Civil War, and Left vs Right ceased to be an issue.

Well, Yes there was a sort of reconciliation.

Before the Civil War The Social Democrats (full name in Finnish: Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen puolue) represented all the left and was usually the largest party in parliament – sometimes with absolute majority.

After the Russian Revolution(s) of 1917 and Finnish Declaration of Independence party was divided between “revolutionary wing” and “moderates”. “Revolutionary wing” was larger and had the support of most Social Democratic MPs. They wanted to make a revolution (with the help of Lenin and his Bolsheviks). After the “Reds” (i.e. revolutionary Social Democrats) lost their attempt of revolution (i.e. Finnish Civil War of 1918) most of the revolutionary leadership and many ordinary “Reds” fled the country and went to e.g. Soviet Russia, USA and Canada. In Soviet Russia and later Soviet Union they (e.g. Edvard Gylling, Kustaa Rovio) practically ruled Soviet Karelia until the purges of Stalin in the 30s. Most famous of those refugees was Otto Ville Kuusinen, who managed to survive Stalin and was member of Soviet CP politburo and secreteriat and famous Marxist theoretician. The Social Democratic refugees in Moscow founded The Finnish Communist Party in 1918. Also those that had fled to USA and Canada mostly symphatized with them.

Those Social Democrats that stayed in Finland, however, were quick to realize the new situation and began work within the parliamentary system. Already in 1919 Social Democrats were again largest party in the parliament and staunchly anti-Communist Social Democrat Väinö Tanner became Finnish Prime minister in 1926

  • In the early hours of 28th September 1994, a pleasure ship, MS Estonia, sank in the Baltic Sea. Of the 989 people on board, a staggering 852 died. Bizarrely, some 650 were found below decks—unable to believe what was happening, they had made no attempt to save their lives Why? One possibility: humans used to...

Another oddity is the fact, that Harri never mentions in his text Russian immigrants when talking about immigration. Russian immigrants are after all one of the largest immigrant groups and the one that that causes significant amount of anxiety among the general population.

Sure, but this will not for much longer be the case. Mass third world migration will be something causing a lot, lot more anxiety in the coming years and decades with free for all welfare attracting them like flies. Eventually the system blows up leaving only exorbitant taxes and mass poverty behind. At least Russians don't throw grenades in town centers, shoot crowds, blow up police cars, attack emergency services and commit mass rapes or generally cause mass havoc in an organized manner. In that context, anxiety towards the Russians has been disproportionate, as they haven't yet had the really bad experiences of the temporary phenomenon dubbed as "multiculturalism" during peace time. Temporary, until it turns into monoculturalism.

Finland missed out on the "enrichment" for so long while not being part of the cultural marxist sphere of influence in the "west" and now they have catching up to do. This was the point of the article, which apparently many have missed. Whether the author of the article is real or not is irrelevant when the general message is a proven point.

Well, I think it is quite relevant whether someone is using his/her own name or someone else’s name. In the Finnish culture that is important. There actually are people in Finland called “Harri Honkanen”. If the writer is not one of them, this is an identity theft. If the writer is not even a Finn, well, that is at least dishonest.

Whether anxiety towards the Russian immigrants has been disproportionate or not is difficult to say. I would say, that most Finns don’t want to have Russian neighbors. We tend to find them a little bit too noisy and “colourful”. They are also very well represented in the crime statistics. Also, there is a constant fear of “Sword of Damocles”. One can never know when Russian government decides to use the Russian minority as an excuse to interfere into internal Finnish affairs. There are some famous (or rather infamous) examples of pro-Russian megaphones already. Dr. Johan Bäckman has been busy speaking to Russian media and accusing Finnish authorities of kidnapping Russian children. At least we don’t share 1000 miles of common border with Somalia (and the Somalis don’t have nuclear weapons). That is not to say, that I would like to have larger Somali minority either.

Who is Harri Honkanen, the writer of this article? The current Finnish prime minister’s family name is not “Sippilä” as the writer claims but “Sipilä.” A Finn, someone who knows Finnish, would never ever, under any circumstances whatever, commit an error like this (use a long consonant in place of a short one). Could UNZ please provide a bit more information about the writer, not just his name/pseudonym. I don’t find anything in the article, basically incoherent anecdotal gossip, that might jeopardize the writer’s life and limb should his identity become known. The only commenter here who seems to know anything about Finland is Jaakko Raipala.

I found the same thing very odd.

Calling prime minister “Sippilä” is by far not the only error or very strange “interpretation” of the Finnish history.

Claiming that Finland was some kind of dictatorship until 1990ies is also very misleading. “Finland has never really been a democracy.” Really? Claim that post-independence Finland was some kind of crypto-fascist dictarorship is a page directly out of Soviet propaganda playbook. In reality, Finland has always been a multiparty democracy. The very same social democrats that fought as “the Reds” in 1918 were able to form a government a decade later. Hard core nationalists (Lapuan liike, IKL, partially AKS) were the ones that inter-War Finnish governments really found troublesome and they were never represented in the highest positions of power.

Also, I doubt that normal Finnish nationalist would so readily admit that our pampered Swedish-speaking elite is to thank for most of the innovation in Finland.

Another oddity is the fact, that Harri never mentions in his text Russian immigrants when talking about immigration. Russian immigrants are after all one of the largest immigrant groups and the one that that causes significant amount of anxiety among the general population.

Also, elevating Swedish-led fringe groups like “Nordic Resistance Movement” and “Soldiers of Odin” as the authentic voice of Finnish people is laughable, to say the very least. Even most Finnish nationalists and rightwingers find these clowns to be irrelevant and even damaging to the “cause”.

Therefore, I have to believe, that this “Harri Honkanen” -character is a Russian – or maybe Swedish – ultranationalist. If he really is a Finn, then he really is sadly out of touch of the political history and culture of his native land.

A Swede would hardly use the sinking of MS Estonia to prove some point about Finland, as most of the casualties were Swedes, and proportionally Estonians, Finns, Latvians and Russians had higher survival rates than Swedes in that incident.

The Finnish presidential election of 2012 is grossly mischaracterized by "Harri" as well. Niinistö, the winner, was not a "compromise candidate" but easily, overwhelmingly, the frontrunner through the whole thing. During the first round Haavisto did not win the popular vote in any Southern region. Niinistö won everywhere except in Åland Islands, where a Swedish-speaking candidate, at least as liberal as Haavisto, got the vote. The supposed "traditionalist" the North voted for was Paavo Väyrynen, a perennial candidate and a known opportunist who in the 80's plotted with KGB officer Viktor Vladimirov to get the Soviet-favoured Ahti Karjalainen through Centre Party's presidential primaries. The "rural conservative northern folks" who voted for him in 2012 were no right-wing nationalists but agrarian Centre Party stalwarts and old-school communists (admittedly both can be surprisingly socially conservative) who are abundant in the North. 2012 had no truly nationalist candidate of note.

  • Even after this evidence presented by Mr. Karlin, I would insist that “Lost in translation” is a real phenomenon when it comes to a field like literature that depends on the language and cultural background. Maybe Russian literature is just not the best possible example. There is, after all, a strong, old and established tradition of Western translation of Russian literature. This was helped by the influx of educated Russians after the revolution. Therefore, it is possible that great classics of Russian literature are, mostly, recognized as such by both the Westerners and the Russians themselves.

Situation is markedly different when it comes to the smaller literatures without such well-established tradition of translation. Finnish and Estonian are examples that come to mind. Swedes have their august academy with Nobel-prize granting superpowers to propagate their literature

Annexing the Baltic states would be a clear case of imperialism

My impression is that support for political integration into the Russian Federation by persons with four Estonian, Latvian, or Lithuanian grandparents (i.e. local ethnics with no 'Soviet' blood ties) would be at most, what, 1 or 2%.

If even that. Also quite a large proportion (probably a clear majority) of Est-Lat-Liths with one Russian/Slavic and one “native” parent support very much independence of their homelands. There are also many ethnic Russians, especially those who have been born in those countries, are relatively well off and/or educated and have local citizenship, who oppose very vocally – even to the point of overcompensation – the idea of annexing their countries to Russia.

@Boris N: Actually, I think that Thailand and Laos is a good analogy for this. After all, as far as I know, Laos was previously a part of Thailand and also has a language which is mutually intelligible to Thai. In this regard, Laos appears to be for Thailand something similar--but smaller (population-wise)--to what Ukraine is for Russia.

Very true. There actually existed (exists?) a “Pan-Thai” political movement, which was quite influential during and before WWII. It wanted to “return” Laos to Thailand. Laos was seen as a part of greater Thai nation (e.g. very similar language and same religion) that for forcibly cut out of national unity by the French.

The CIA and FBI and NSA have been fighting against each other for decades, duh, major, duh. This is a pivotal year for all factions to choose sides or: retire, or fall in line. SIMPLE. My grandfather had to deal with this in Finland in 1919. Choose....fracking choose: country or your petty self - should be easy.

And, if you can't chose...well, according to my Grandpa's memoirs: you and your family will forfeit your farm, your property, you existence (border moved west)...pack up and march to the eastern (Russian) border. You are now, on your own. Good bye.

Excuse me, but what are you talking about? What happened to your grandfather in 1919 in Finland? Are you referring to the Civil War of 1918 or Winter War (1939 – 1940)? During the Civil War border moved nowhere. During the Winter War practically nobody chose a side – nearly all men, including most communists, were in arms against the invader. If you are referring to the Civil War, I have never heard that anybody forfeited their landed property, not even those on the losing (“Red”) side. Then again, most of the Reds never actually owned land. They were mostly tenant farmers and agricultural laborers. Naturally there were criminal punishments for the rebellion and even executions (many of them of very dubious legal character).

You must have a very bizarre view of the history of Finland and the Baltics. Why even compare us to European peoples who had governments of their own while we were historically under Germanic regimes that were very interested in preventing any "Great People" from emerging among ethnic Finns?

If you were a smart ethnic Finn in the 19th century with the potential to become a scientist, lawyer, writer, politician, officer or whatever, what would you have done? You were more or less predetermined to a career as a socialist revolutionary since you'd be stuck with the frustration of being a high IQ ethnic Finn living in a Germanic colony where most smart ethnic Finns had zero chance at careers matching ability. Sure, the Grand Duchy of Finland had excellent schools.... for Swedes and Germans. Sure, the Grand Duchy of Finland had extensive political autonomy... for Swedish and German aristocrats. Sure, we had high literacy from Bible study... but we could only read the few selected books written by Swedes and Germans.

The Reds here were very much an ethnic Finnish rebellion and "avoiding going Red" meant that much of the better half of the ethnic Finnish bell curve was wiped out by the Whites while we had to wait for years for independent Finland to even give the Finnish language legal status. Avoiding the communist disaster was a good thing in most ways but certainly not when it comes to educational opportunities for ethnic Finns.

In fact, Germans and German-supported Swedes among "our" Whites took the opportunity to murder a lot of ethnic Finns (and Russians) who were simply prominent in some way to get rid of competitors to their power. When you step into hbd blogs you get to read lamenting about how "Northwest Europeans" are supposedly so universalist, altruistic and so lacking in will to act for group ethnic interests while Finns and Slavs are supposedly clannish but this is a totally ridiculous inversion of how different ethnic groups actually acted here for all of history.

Those gushing over Baltic German achievements are even more ridiculous. Most ethnic groups would achieve a lot if they got to keep another ethnic group as serfs for half a millennium so that their most promising sons don't need to work and can spend all their time and energy on political connections, philosophy and the like.

I partially agree with you, Jaakko, but I think you are severely exaggerating. By the late 19th century there already was an ethnic Finnish educated middle class. First Finnish-language schools leading to university studies were founded in the middle of 19th century. First doctoral dissertations written entirely in Finnish date back more than 150 years. Even before that there were educated ethnic Finns – they only had their higher education in Swedish (or German or Latin). Finnish literature (Kivi, Canth, Aho…) was already flourishing by the beginning of the 20th century.

Finnish became a legal language gradually during the decades following 1863 (Kielireskripti by Alexander II). By the beginning of 20th century Finland was for all practical purposes officially Finnish and Swedish bilingual country.

Also, the majority of Anti-Bolshevik “Whites” were ethnic Finns – as the majority of Estonian “Whites” in 1919 were ethnic Estonians.

As for the relative lack of the “great men” among the ethnic Finns and Estonians, I am not completely convinced that this is true. There is of course this “lost in translation” phenomenon: e.g. most authors writing in Finnish or Estonian were never translated to other languages or at least they were not actively promoted. From the Estonian side, I would consider at least F. R. Kreutzwald, A. H. Tammsaare, Marie Under and Jaan Kross to be of international stature. From the Finnish side there were also many important names, that are not internationally well known (e.g. Juhani Aho was a perennial candidate for Nobel prize for literature, but remember SWEDISH Academy…). Same is generally true of the fine arts, a lot of good painters and sculptors that are not very well known internationally (J. Takanen, P. Halonen, J. Rissanen, W. Aaltonen). Some architects are rather well known (Alvar Aalto, Eliel and Eero Saarinen).

  • Here are the overall 2015 PISA scores (averaging the Science, Reading, and Math scores equally), with color coding to put the various American scores (red bars) in perspective. Keep in mind that some countries didn't do a good job of rounding up everybody who was supposed to take the test, which probably serves to boost...
  • @Curiousreader
Absolutely correct. The PISA-worshipping is completly illogical given the huge and unexplainable disparities that you've highlighted.

The Estonia-Lithuania divergence itself should disqualify anyone who still takes the test as a reliable proxy for IQ.

Well, I don’t quite see why this should be the case. Estonia and Lithuania are culturally, historically, religiously, linguistically, and genetically VERY, VERY dissimilar countries. Former is a Protestant, Finno-Ugric nation, that was earlier part of German and Swedish cultural and political sphere. Latter is a Catholic, Baltic-speaking nation, that was formerly part of Polish cultural and political sphere. Only thing they have in common is the fact, that for two centuries or less they were part of Russian empire and later they were annexed by USSR. And also, as a comment to one earlier commentator, neither can be described as “Scando-Slavic”.

Not really. While there are differences between the three populations, they are not as vast as you say. Certainly, Latvia is more similar to Estonia in the sense that it is largely Protestant, too. The truth is though that all of the Baltic countries have been predominantly secular the last 100 or so years. What makes Estonia stand out is not some genetic trait, but the fact that 25 years ago all three countries inherited the Soviet education which had put a huge emphasis on the so called "exact" sciences (to the detriment of social sciences, by the way). What most likely happened was that Estonia didn't dismantle the inherited system to the extent that the other Balts did - e.g., they didn't just replace it but took the best out of it and tweaked it to their own modern, innovative approach. Estonians tend to be slightly more pragmatic than Latvians / Lithuanians, and they have a slightly better living standard, but the difference is not huge. They also mix with Russians less. Also, genetically, Estonians and Latvians are very close (r1a and N) - there is a strong Finnic (Livonian) strata in both of those nations (even if they speak different languages). Having a common past in the USSR is definitely not the only thing these peoples have in common - for instance, all of those countries have equally high internet speeds and relatively similar pre-war cultural traditions (even though Estonia is more "northern" but Lithuania "central" European). None of them are Germanic or Slavic.
    , @little spoon
"Estonia and Lithuania are culturally, historically, religiously, linguistically, and genetically VERY, VERY dissimilar countries."

That's not a correct statement. As far as two different nationalities go, the Estonians and the Lithuanians are genetically very similar even though they don't have a mutually comprehenisible language. You can see this illustrated in this map-

    http://brilliantmaps.com/the-genetic-map-of-europe/

The Estonians are genetically very similar to Lithuanians and not similar to germans as far as white ethnicities go. Estonians are also more similar to Lithuanians than they are to the Finnish. You can see that the baltic countries form a clear cluster of genetically similar nationalities that can be obviously distinguished from all other groups including Scandinavians and other northern European slavs.

The fact that the Estonian score is closer to Portugal, multi racial Americans and Singapore than to either Latvians or Lithuanians does not lend credibility to the thesis that aptitude is heritable if one takes the PISA test to be a measure of aptitude.
