From the Chicago Tribune: Chicago police want to question 'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett after questioning and releasing 2 brothers Tracy Swartz, Jeremy Gorner, Annie Sweeney Chicago Tribune Chicago police said Saturday they have reached out to the attorney for "Empire" star Jussie Smollett because they still want to speak to Smollett after releasing two brothers...
  • Systemic racism is about effect, not intent. So while the intent of the Chicago PD was to gather evidence and seek to uncover the truth in pursuit of justice, the effect was to discredit a black man who paid two associates to fake a hate crime on the coldest day of the year. Consequently, I condemn the actions of CPD. Their behavior has no place in a civilized society.

  • One trend we've been tracking at iSteve recently is Tiger Children taking over the social justice jihadi racket. You might think that just because you are poor and black that you'd get a leg up in the struggle for, say, a leftist NGO job, but ... look out! The hardest-charging immigrants are coming from 10,000...

He describes the goal of his company is to “profit off of our own narrative”.

Well, wasn’t that Barack Obama’s career plan? And he made it all the way to the White House. How many countries have you been president of?

  • From the New York Times: Black district attorney, black mayor, black judge, black cops, black corpse, black rioters, black Attorney General, black President ... white people to blame.
  • You forgot “black female lead detective” who is now being blamed for sabotaging the case.

  • From Janet Maslin's review in the New York Times of Becoming Richard Pryor by Scott Saul: A big difference between Cosby and the late Pryor is that Cosby held on to much of his money (his net worth is estimated to be in the mid 9 figures), so he's a deep-pocketed target for lawsuits. I...
  • Cosby was also not keen on self-immolation. Another love interest came home to the ghastly smell of Richard on fire.

  • The New York Times routinely runs articles about how the Obama Administration isn't encouraging rioting and illegal immigration enough. These are obvious media set-ups with the Administration to justify the Administration moving even further to the left. Here's the latest: Obama's life story remains
  • When they said their voices were not being heard, Mr. Obama replied, “You are sitting in the Oval Office, talking to the president of the United States.”

Say what you will about Obama, but he’s pretty good at off-the-cuff one-liners.

By the way, isn’t it racist of these protestors to be so dismissive and disrespectful of our first black president?

    • Replies: @pyrrhus
Wait, I thought that was Clinton!?

  • From my new column at Taki's Magazine: Read the whole thing there. By the way, before I linked to Richard Bradley's November 24th post expressing skepticism about the Rolling Stone article here on November 29th, virtually nobody in the press was expressing any d

Yup, Sabrina is definitely nursing a grudge of some sort.

The student body is just 'overwhelmingly blonde' down in those parts...something MUST be amiss!

UVAs fraternities are essentially just Nazi rape camps to Sabrina and her ilk.

I guess we know why she didn't put her microscope on Harvard or Yale, why those schools 'just didn't feel right'

Erdely is clearly an Ivy League homer, having worked with Stephen Glass in college at the UPenn newspaper. Better not let those 2nd tier schools get uppity.

    • Replies: @Anonymous
I'm sure that was part of it, but the frats and the frat parties at the Ivies are also much milder than at places like UVA.
  • From Jezebel: 'Is the UVA Rape Story a Gigantic Hoax?' Asks Idiot Anna Merlan Ever since journalist Sabrina Rubin Erdely published her searing Rolling Stone story about "Jackie," a woman who was allegedly the victim of a gang rape at a frat party at the University of Virginia, there's been an ongoing and much-needed public...
  • Before you right that Taki’s Mag article, at Slate, they just posted a follow-up by Rosin and Benedikt to their podcast interview of Erdely. The interesting part is their description of UVA anti-sexual assault student organizations. They apparently have a rule against ever questioning a self-identified rape victim about the veracity or details of their alleged sexual assault.

From what I gather, ‘Jackie’ has been somewhat open about this incident, it seems to a group in the double or triple digits. Since the alleged incident took place 2 years ago, it may be possible that some much less fantastic rape did take place against Jackie, but that as she shared her story again and again, she changed the details and exaggerated because she was never called out for the inconsistencies. One or two men turn into 7, etc…. By the time Erdely comes along, Jackie could still be suffering from the traumatic after effects of a rape, and thus justify Erdely’s conviction that “something happened”, but the supporting details are wildly inflated and bogus.

  • A key number for understanding the election as mayor of Newark of black nationalist Ras Baraka (son of Sixties poet Leroi Jones / Amiri Baraka) over Cory Booker's well-funded designated successor is 10.9. That's the number of miles from downtown Newark to Wall Street. Another number is 18: that's the number of minutes from Newark's...
  • 691 says:

My impression is that Newark isn't really in danger of gentrifying. A key fact is that after the riots in the 60s, the city razed a lot of the older housing stock and industrial buildings and built new, cheaper, ugly housing in their place. So Newark destroyed its supply of dilapidated fixer-uppers for whites to buy on the cheap and renovate.

  • I found an election report from Oct 1994 by the International Republican Institute. At the bottom of page 119, it cites an article from the Sunday Times (South Africa) on May 8 1994 that seems to jive with your recollection. Although the motive seems to be to cover up large voting irregularities and administrative incompetence that might have completely jeopardized the legitimacy of the election.

  • I googled "mandela vote rigging" and the first result is a UK Telegraph article "Election won by Mandela 'rigged by opposition'", which mentions a book by Peter Harris.

  • In public discourse, there's a common assumption that women in the workplace is this amazing new idea that was just invented last week.

Could this be a consequence of many career women opting out of the career-track in their mid-30s? Lots of women (including my mother) took enormous effort to establish themselves in a professional environment, then after having kids slowly eased out and let their husbands be the breadwinner. This makes them invisible to new generations of women who have lots of career energy in their 20s; there are thus too few female mentors to establish some cross-generational perspective and wisdom.

  • Steve, I should add that Wiles actually proved something called the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, which itself implied Fermat's Last Theorem, and was named after two Japanese mathematicians.

"But the work is objectively more difficult. It just is"

I disagree. Mathematics is merely far more sophisticated today than a hundred years ago or more; the terminology and concepts are incredibly subtle. But they are also far more powerful, allowing you to prove far better results.

Chomsky's Shoenberg analogy with modern music is very apt although I disagree that it's simply a quirk of the mind that allows you to do it. There's a lot of "hazing" you have to go through to get to the point where you can do modern mathematics, spending several years sucking it up and learning vast amounts of knowledge. It certainly takes aptitude as well but there is a steep learning curve you have to push yourself over.

"You have to stand on the shoulders of a lot of giants now. It's not going to be too terribly long before you will be 44 years old when you've learned what your field is about."

You should be able to get to that point by 25 if you're good and committed.

  • The games of the last decade have certainly been more interesting than much of the 90s. You have to go back to the Bucs-Raiders in SB 37 to find a blowout. SB 35 between the Ravens and Giants was a blowout too.

The story of the last decade, however, is spectacular finishes. It all starts with SB 34, where Mike Jones tackles Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line to prevent the winning score as time expires. Then you have TD drives in the final few minutes or FGs as time expires (Vinateri and the Pats). More dramatically, teams scoring touchdowns with a few minutes left (Patriots; Cardinals) and then the other team (Giants; Steelers) driving for their own winning score.

Of course, not all the games went down to the wire; they were interesting games but no significant lead change happened near the end. So I think it's mainly random chance accentuated by a few very dramatic finishes.

Steve, I think a lot of your analysis about soccer player development in the US falls apart when you consider the sport of tennis.

Tennis players must train from a very young age at professional academies in order to have a chance at playing professionally. They can break into the pros at a similar age to soccer players (16) and their careers die around the same time (late 20s). There is in fact a greater risk to playing tennis, of completely failing despite spending your whole life on this, since in order to make money you need to be top 50-100 in the world. There aren't several leagues of several dozen teams in each country to find a job with.

Why will lots of parents pay through the nose to send their sons and daughters to tennis academies and not do something similar for soccer?

  • The biathlon is actually great television. Today was a little different because it was an individual event, which means it was a time trial and didn't have the same race feel. But the rest of the events are perfect. The athletes are racing each other skiing, then come into the shooting and have to make five shots. Each miss means a penalty lap and a loss of about 20 seconds so the shooting stage is very tense. Once most of the competitors have finished shooting, they go to commercial and when they return, it is just about time to shoot again. The cross country skiing is boring but the event is set up perfectly for TV to avoid it. It's like watching NASCAR without most of the 500 laps but keeping the pitstops, drawn out to fill a half-hour television slot.

Also, the point of "cumulative judging" is to lower the statistical variance of performances because an average Olympic athlete has about 30 to 60 seconds once every four years to perform and win a gold medal. You cannot have any mistakes and slipping eliminates you. Manning gets 16 games of 60 minutes each every season and can screw up a drive every once in a while; Bonds got 162 games with four at-bats a pop so he can strike out often. Over such a long time and with so many opportunities, the variance is much lower.

  • Interesting idea Steve. But are blacks strong enough to take down the Democratic party from the inside? Will the whites who have controlled the Democratic Party forever really give in to the black faction?

However much white Democrats parade their own moral superiority to Republicans, they are still very racist. Not in their language – they are very PC – but in their actions. When it comes to finding a town to live in, picking a school to send their kids to or which social circle to pursue, they want nothing to do with blacks. They are very practical in their racism and when it comes to serious issues, they know that involving blacks is a bad idea.

What this means for your strategy is that I doubt the white elite of the Democratic Party will let the black faction take charge without a fight, that they will not be tricked into it by flattering their postracial egos. All Democrats know that black politicians are clowns, but they pretend otherwise for their own political gain. Democrats have not had a problem ignoring black politicians who want to make a mark nationally.

The other path is that blacks assert their position in the party by force. I find this unlikely. They cannot credibly threaten to withdraw their support from the party. So in 2016, they will be ignored just like they have been time and again.
