In early 2016, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his country would no longer bomb the Islamic State. Defending this decision, the prime minister stated: “Call us old-fashioned, but we think that we ought to avoid doing precisely what our enemies want us to do. They want us to elevate, to give in to fear, to indulge in hatred, to eye one another with suspicion, and to take leave of our faculties” [Canada IS airstrikes: Trudeau announces 22 February end date, BBC, May 13, 2018] This was famously paraphrased by Gavin McInnes, among others, as, “If you kill your enemies, they win.” Though Justin Trudeau never actually said this, it encapsulated his worldview so precisely that many people assumed it was true.

Unfortunately, most Conservatism Inc. operatives saying the same kinds of things about technology oligopolies. The Beltway Right acknowledges censorship, demonization, and marginalization by tech mega companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, but doesn’t want to do anything about it. Thus, even though the Republican Party controls both Congress and the White House, the conservative and nationalist online activists who won Donald Trump the presidency in an unprecedented upset are being systematically suppressed and “the Conservative movement” is saying nothing.

For example, in a recent interview with Breitbart, Klon Kitchen, the Heritage Foundation’s senior research fellow for technology, said Facebook has the right to censor whomever it wants. “I think Facebook is a private company,” Kitchen stated. “[T]he Heritage Foundation is going to be very clear about a private company’s right to organize and conduct its business as it sees fit”. [Heritage Foundation defends Facebook’s ‘right’ to censor, will oppose regulation, by Allum Bokhari, May 3, 2018]

In a separate piece, Breitbart’s Bokhari denounced both Heritage and the Libertarian think tank “TechFreedom,” another group opposing regulation of Facebook and other social networking giants [Bokhari: ‘Free Market’ Defenders Of Tech Giants Are Useful Idiots, Breitbart, May 6, 2018]. Bokhari argued Establishment conservatives are failing to understand the core issue:

None of these free market geniuses have grasped that Google and Facebook aren’t just monopolies (any first-grade economics teacher can tell you that a market dominated by monopolies is not “free”), they are unique in the vast power they have over the flow of information. No other organization in history has had the power to shape opinion, control public discourse, and influence democratic voters.

As the last Radio VDARE argued, the power of these megacompanies creates the potential for a “managed democracy” such Vladimir Putin’s Russia is alleged to be.

Indeed, the situation in America is more tyrannical and more dangerous. In Russia, the people at least know who to hold responsible if the system fails them. In America, because the actors controlling the flow of information are not technically part of the government, there is an illusion of a “marketplace of ideas,” when there is actually just one narrative being promoted. Only a cynic can speak of “democracy” when the public’s access to information, and therefore the public’s view of reality, can be determined by the push of a button.

As even Main Stream Media journalists now concede, Facebook (and its algorithm) now has the power to direct massive amounts of traffic to whatever companies it wants [The Facebook Armageddon: the social network’s increasing threat to journalism, by Matthew Ingram, Columbia Journalism Review, Winter 2018] Because no one actually knows what the algorithm is and because it continually changes, Facebook essentially has the power to destroy any company it desires. Given the company’s Leftist views, this means every conservative website is on the endangered list. [How Conservatives Are Being Destroyed by Facebook, Twitter and Google Without Even Realizing It, by John Hawkins, January 13, 2018]

Even before Trump’s election, a study found Google’s search results have a liberal bias. [Google search results can lean liberal, study finds, by Jack Nicas, Wall Street Journal, November 21, 2016] Now, Google is using the Southern Poverty Law Center to police content on YouTube, which Google owns. [Exclusive: YouTube Secretly Using SPLC To Police Videos, by Peter Hasson, Daily Caller, February 27, 2018] Google is also censoring its search results to please various pressure groups, such as the Islamic lobby. [Google changes search results to conceal criticism of Islam and jihad, by Robert Spencer, LifeSiteNews, August 2, 2017].

Needless to say, modifying search results could have a massive impact on the upcoming midterm elections [Beyond Cambridge Analytica: How Tech Giants Can Impact Elections, by Haelena Bondi-Camacho, Capital Research Center, April 19, 2018].

Michael Brendan Dougherty, writing at National Review, quotes Niall Ferguson’s post-election prediction that “2016 will never happen again” because tech oligarchs won’t let it.

Dougherty suggests the tech oligopolies are currently trying to swing an upcoming referendum in Ireland on abortion by restricting online ads on the issue. Because the pro-abortion side of the referendum enjoys the all-but-universal support of traditional broadcast and print media, the tech oligarchs are effectively preventing the less-well-funded pro-lifers from combatting media bias. Dougherty calls the situation “extremely serious” and asks:

If they [tech companies] feel the need to appease center-left critics by preemptively disarming Irish pro-lifers, whom will they seek to silence, and throttle, next?

[Silicon Valley Deletes the Pro-Life Campaign in Ireland, May 9, 2018]

The answer is obvious—us.

The war has already begun. Joseph Farah, the head of one of the oldest conservative websites, WND, argues Google and Facebook are conducting a “scorched earth campaign” against independent media—and that the U.S. government’s regulatory agencies do not understand the new online environment:

The U.S. government has long recognized its responsibility in preserving a free and open environment of debate ever since the dawn of radio and television, by ensuring that the means of distribution of such content did not fall into the hands of monopoly control. The Federal Communications Commission has prevented media consolidation in individual markets. But, with the advent of the internet, local media consolidation poses less of a threat than national and international media consolidation.

[Google-Facebook control of speech is threat to nation, WND, April 1, 2018]

The good news: at least some conservatives seem to be awakening to this reality. Thus Senator Ted Cruz, in a recent op-ed for Fox News, argued that Facebook should be considered a “neutral public forum” that cannot engage in political censorship. It must be “neutral” in order to enjoy the protection of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA), which prevents social networks from being held liable for illegal threats made on their platform.

Needless to say, Facebook could not function without such protection. But with this legal privilege comes the responsibility to protect freedom of speech. As Ted Cruz put it:

“[I]f Facebook is busy censoring legal, protected speech for political reasons, the company should be held accountable for the posts it lets through. And it should not enjoy any special congressional immunity from liability for its actions.”

[Sen. Ted Cruz: Facebook has been censoring or suppressing conservative speech for years, April 11, 2018].

Why isn’t Heritage taking up Senator Cruz’s call? The possible answer: as noted, Facebook is seeking to counter accusations of bias by recruiting outside forces to determine what is “biased” and what is not. Instead of an objective standard or the general protection of free speech, Facebook will meet with “advisors”—including, not surprisingly, Klon Kitchen of Heritage. [Is Facebook too liberal? It pledges to investigate charges it’s biased against conservatives, by Jessica Guynn, USA Today, May 3, 2018] The point man for the effort is the useless former GOP senator from Arizona, John Kyl.

The endgame is obvious. Heritage is in a position of huge power because of this decision. As it is, after all, the organization that fired Jason Richwine for realistically discussing immigration policy certainly won’t protect free speech as such. Instead, it will seek protection for Conservatism Inc. by telling Facebook to purge, censor, and deplatform nationalists and populists, thus continuing the defining tradition of the useless Beltway Right. Conservatism Inc. is just as much of an enemy to free speech as are Google and Facebook.

The answer: government or judicial action to protect freedom of debate online. All legal speech needs protection, and as the late Christopher Hitchens famously argued (paraphrasing John Stuart Mill) those who speak differently don’t just deserve the right to speak, “That person’s right to speak must be given extra protection.”

But the fact that the Heritage Foundation isn’t championing a principled view of freedom of speech suggests it is more interested in increasing its own power, not in protecting Americans’ fundamental liberties or, for that matter, any chance Republicans can ever win another election.

As demographics continue to change because of mass immigration, the white cultural norm of freedom of speech will come under increasing pressure. If it is to be preserved, there must be action now.

If there is not action, America will no longer be a free country but as just another autocracy—one with a ruling caste far more unaccountable and hostile to the host population than anything that exists in Moscow.

  1. Good article that brings up lots of things in my mind besides the key issue of monopolies and the public interest. I’ll write 2 or 3 comments then. First:

Due to laziness on the part of consumers over many years, yes the search engine Google has indeed become a monopoly. It’s akin to any kind of sharing-economy website or lots of others, for example, a dating website. If you only have 3 girls on there, and they’re not that pretty at that, what guy will pay to sign up? Once you get a critical mass of users, and significantly more than the next guy, the ball will start rolling fast.

I can remember when google became the leader in these “search engines”, as they were called then, with 5 -10 being used with no one as a particular monopoly. There would be different leading sites every few years or so, say lycos, yahoo, altavista, etc. By the end of the 90′s, it did seem that google was the one that worked the best. They had the best algorithms for USER satisfaction back then; now it’s the best algorithms for GOVERNMENT satisfaction.

I bring up laziness, because there are other options. Yes, the others may be coopted too, in some way (I don’t trust MS, on which is based and am told duckduckgo uses the bing dBase – or is it their software?). Still, people go the easy route and don’t want to spend the time to find alternatives. I will admit that, even though I don’t see it as spyware and it doesn’t output propaganda, Windows is something I use out of laziness. It really pisses me off that I have to learn new stuff every coupla years to do the same job I could do fine before. Additionally, I resent paying for these new versions that force me to re-learn stuff when I buy a new machine. A piece of software is a tool. I don’t have to relearn how to use my table saw every few years. I don’t have to pay a fee for more features either? Why should I have to do that with MS Word!? Still, here I am using it instead of Linux on one computer at home (not this one.)

  2. That last comment was getting long in the tooth, but here’s something that kind of goes with it. I don’t do facebook. Don’t try to FIND me, don’t try to FRIEND me. and don’t try to LIKE me (that goes expecially for you Attila-the-Hen. ;-}. You’d be wasting your time.

All it would take to stop Zuckerberg’s spy-engine would be for the population to ditch that stuff. It’s not like most people aren’t aware by now about the spying and censoring by now. If you put up with this, you are part of the problem. How important is it, anyway, to know when your spouse had her last bowel movement and to see what your friend had for brunch?

It’s not the same thing as google. Most people can’t get normal stuff done anymore, not even mentioning reading news and stuff, without google. It’s a big part of people’s lives, especially with the mobile devices. You can’t bet anyone on some point of fact anymore without him asking his phone.

  4. The author fails to connect the Khazars who control all media and pathways in the country and most of the world. There is no such thing as Conservatism. The Republican Congress and these so called Think Tanks are nothing more than Corporate Controlled Fascists. This is no longer the party of Teddy Roosevelt. They hate middle America and they hate Western Civilization contrary to what they say. They care only for themselves and their bank accounts.

The Protestant Robber Barons sold out to Khazars and are nothing more than whores. They showed their true selves as nothing more money hungry bastards. The people with ideas and with some balls like Henry Ford are eschewed now by Conservatives.

Our Congress is owned by Israel and cower before Bibi. When Zuckerberg testified before Congress recently the idiot Congressmen basically fellated the lying little prick and he walked away laughing at them. Facebook’s initial monetary input was from the intelligence agencies. The suck asses in Congress know this and it was just a dog and pony show for the dim witted populace.

The original backbone of the internet was government, military and government-university paid for research and that’s why it should not be controlled by Google and the rest of Jeworama. There is only one way to stop this and it won’t happen. It’s simple: get a bunch investors together with some real money and put up your own facebook like site; the same for youtube and the rest of the stuff. The reason it won’t happen is because like the Robber Barons who sold out…we have all been sold out to the Corporate Fascist Military Industrial-Intellligence Police State controlled by the Khazars. This is another Communist Revolution by Jews just as it was in Russia and in Germany. The only way this succeeds is to stop all free speech and the Khazars are on their way to do it again.

  5. For those who understand German, look for Udo Ulfkotte at Youtube, he explains how he, when he was a journalist with Germany’s prestigious newpaper FAZ, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, manipulated in writing pro western stories.
Germany has a new word, Lügenpresse, media of lies.
In the Netherlands the official news, NOS, has less and less impact.
So the EU, Brussels, tries to control the news that does not please them.
Suppose the CIA did not foresee these consequences when they designed internet in such a way that it cannot be controlled centrally.
By association, dit the Roman empire foresee that the christianity it supported to undermine jewry would be the end of their empire ?

  6. “… the U.S. government’s regulatory agencies do not understand the new online environment.”

They understand it, but they are part of the cabal, so they have no interest in regulating or stopping the abuses.

“Senator Ted Cruz, in a recent op-ed for Fox News, argued that Facebook should be considered a “neutral public forum” that cannot engage in political censorship. It must be “neutral” in order to enjoy the protection of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA), which prevents social networks from being held liable for illegal threats made on their platform.”

A better approach would be to declare these platforms Common Carriers that must take all traffic under the appropriate FCC regs.

Heritage Foundation is a business that makes selected players quite wealthy by tugging on the heartstrings of a gullible audience, unfortunately to the delivery of little social good … kind of like Planned Parenthood.

  7. Jake says:

The concluding paragraph needs a slight edit to: If there is not action, America will no longer be a free country but as just another autocracy—one with a ruling caste far more unaccountable and hostile to the host population than anything that ever existed in Moscow, many times worse than the worst Tsars combined and much worse than Stalin’s reign if only because of technology.

American has evolved into the Evil Empire.

  8. Re the Irish referendum: I’m always amused that the very same American groups and, often enough, the same individuals, who piously swear that our EU membership “violates out sovereignty” regularly violate our sovereignty themselves by attempting to manipulate, or even rig, our elections and referenda!

  10. I have no love for Fakebook, nor any account therewith. I’m also old enough to remember the dark ages BI (Before Internet). In those times, the gatekeepers of acceptable information were CBS, NBC, ABC, and (to some extent) CNN, plus the prestige dead-tree newspapers and their many local imitators. (I’m actually old enough to remember, too, when “talk radio” was either sports or liberalism … and that’s been a while now.) And while I agree with much that the author is saying, I’m not seeing how today’s tech oligarchs differ from yesterday’s non-tech oligarchs. Both have a stranglehold on “respectable” public discourse. It may be that the first couple of decades of the internet were a brief window of discursive liberty, now in the process of slamming shut.

I also think that much of the power of the Fakebook platform is due to laziness on the part of those who use it. Turn your back and walk away from it.

I am not even comfortable with a contention that whatever I write or post to some article is now the owned by said venue that posts articles. It feels like they are claiming ownership of intellectual property.

As long as the referenced companies maintain their corporate tax standings and operate as private entities then they may do as they choose and in the case of public stock companies, one assumes they are abiding by the holders wishes. As such, I think the only obligation is honest advertising — they should state up front that they have a bias and will direct their companies efforts to feeding that bias —-

In large print tagged to every page,

“We don’t like conservatives and we wish they were dead”

    should suffice.

  20. As demographics continue to change because of mass immigration, the white cultural norm of freedom of speech will come under increasing pressure. If it is to be preserved, there must be action now.

    I say:

The GOP ruling class must be smashed before patriotic White Core Americans can deal with the globalizers in the Democrat Party. A two-front effort to smash the GOP ruling class globalizers and the Democrat Party globalizers at the same time would split forces that would be better put to use destroying the treasonous rats in the GOP ruling class. First things first.

GOP presidential primary voters started the ball rolling by staying the hell away from Jebby Bush and the Bush Organized Crime Syndicate. In New Hampshire, there was a gut level rejection of the Bush Organized Crime Syndicate that was fun to watch. I was very proud of the New Hampshire voters for rejecting Jebby Bush and his treasonous rat thug buddies.

The GOP ruling class still pushes mass legal immigration and amnesty for illegal alien invaders. The GOP ruling class still pushes wage-reducing, sovereignty-sapping trade deal scams and other transnational schemes. The GOP ruling class still pushes for more endless overseas war on behalf of Israel in the Middle East and West Asia.

Yawn, Hitler was a vegetarian, so then ….

But no surprise. The fake ‘holocaust’ narrative was conjured up to win every argument Jews engage in and of course, to rake in tons of cash.

The fact that the impossible claim of ’6,000,000 Jews & gas chambers’ are easily debunked frauds rather changes the ‘Nazi’ thing.

  22. As demographics continue to change because of mass immigration, the white cultural norm of freedom of speech will come under increasing pressure. If it is to be preserved, there must be action now.

The Jew-controlled corporate media must be destroyed.

    Viacom/CBS is a Jew-controlled media corporation.

    Comcast/NBC is a Jew-controlled media corporation.

    Disney/ABC is a Jew-controlled media corporation.

Fox News/Murdoch is a media corporation that could be described as certainly coming from a Neo-Conservative Jew perspective. You can’t say Fox News/Murdoch is Jew-controlled, but it sure seems like it.

The European Christian ancestral core of the United States must dislodge the Jew-controlled electronic media. White Core Americans could attempt to make a deal with the Jew-controlled corporate media, such as Putin did with the Jew oligarchs, or White Core Americans could use their power to take over the corporate media outlets.

Mass immigration is being used as a demographic weapon to attack the European Christian ancestral core of the United States. Mass immigration has brought a slow motion WHITE GENOCIDE to the United States. The WHITE GENOCIDE attack on White Core Americans is now accelerating towards its eventual end in conflict among the various nations within the United States.

The mainstream media has always been dishonest. From the “yellow journalism” of the late 1800s and early 1900s to today’s “fake news”, journalism has shown its true (communist) roots.

From the lies about the Spanish-American war to the New York Times’ walter duranty hiding the truth about and denying the artificially engineered and forced communist “famine” in the Ukraine, to the lies about the 1968 Viet Nam communist Tet offensive (a military victory for the South Vietnamese and American troops) reported by walter cronkite as a military defeat, cronkite and his ilk were successful in prolonging the Viet Nam war for years, giving “aid and comfort” to the enemy, who bragged about being supported by the U S media.
Look at NBCs doctoring of GMC truck gas tanks, rigging them to explode, and the deliberate mischaracterization of George Zimmerman’s conversation withe the 911 dispatcher, deleting a key phrase, as well as showing Trayvon Martin as a 12-year-old rather than his more recent “thug” facebook picture.

The media has become a “fifth column” of the government and is not to be trusted. The CIA has had its hooks in the media since the 1950s. In fact, Hollywood script writers were paid to insert anti-drug messages in their scripts during the “drug hysteria” period of the 1980s through 2000s. Today, we have “crisis actors” embedded in our government and media, the same “crisis actors” who keep showing up, being used in every (fake) “crisis”. The mainstream media keeps parroting these impostors, thinking that we are stupid, not being able to see through their lies and deceptions.

To our advantage, we now have the internet, which gives the ordinary citizen the ability to see through the deceptions and lies, and the capability to be real “journalists”, quite often getting and reporting the story TRUTHFULLY before the mainstream media.
In fact, there are calls by “mainstream media” to “license” journalists, in an attempt to keep these “citizen journalists” out…twenty years ago, any journalist suggesting such a scheme would have been thrown out, but nowadays…

“The impression of an independent press in America is part of the illusion. In 1898, at an annual dinner of the American Press Association, John Swinton, the one-time editor-in-chief of the New York Times, was called upon to toast journalism and America’s free press. He responded in a surprising way:

‘There is no such thing in America as an independent press, unless it is in the country towns.38 You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write his honest opinions, and if you did you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid $150.00 a week for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with—others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things—and any of you who would be so foolish as to write his honest opinions would be out on the street looking for another job. The business of the New York journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to revile, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his race and his country for his daily bread. You know this and I know it, and what folly is this to be toasting an “Independent Press.” We are tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks; they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.’39….

“Thanks to Amendment 1’s provision for the freedom of the press, the media can say or write just about anything with immunity (until they stand before the judgment seat of God). The media slanders and libels and is very seldom required to prove its allegations:

‘In developing a truly free press, newspapers found they had a powerful ally in the supreme court, which turned a single phrase, “or of the press,” (contained in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution) into a potent shield for press freedom.’41….”

One wing of Modern Talmudist thought on the Messias is that the true Jewish anointed savior cannot come until the land of Christendom is overrun and Christianity is utterly destroyed there. Religious Jews of a particular mindset – perhaps a growing number of religious Jews – adhere to that interpretation and so want Europe filled with Mohammedans even as they act simultaneously to lead Europeans deeper into the pit of despair that clearly is ending in cultural suicide. And Mohammedans always figure out how to use Jews and Jewish notions against Christians and others they wish to force to convert to Mohammedanism .

part of the problem isnt that you’re just lazy youre cheap too. And this is what exploited its free and if they get first mover advantage its free of a time investment where as moving costs at least time. additionally we are all aware that no matter where you go the NSA is recording every bit of it.

What I see transpiring is that kosher conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation will conspire and collude with Facebook and others to shut populist right, pro-white and those questioning Jewish power and influence out of the conversation. They are a threat to kosher conservatism’s market share, after all. Heritage and like groups never pass up a chance to virtue signal to the radical left.

Leftist and black radicals espousing genocide of whites, the theory of white privilege and hatred of American and confederate history won’t be inconvenienced at all or lose any privileges on major platforms.

Absolutely right. As a teen and young adult I read my city’s newspapers. One story ran about twice a week with different characters. The story was

“ evil prejudiced White male police officers who live in the all White suburbs, hate blacks and belong to the neo Nazi KKK arrested a poor unfortunate victim of slavery and prejudice for no reason other than being black and were mean to him”

    Things never change

Agreed on the NSA part (with a few exceptions if you really understand the electronic world). How’s it make me cheap to not want to freakin’ learn the new way to use Windows, Word, and other MS stuff every few years?

Linux is free for lots of versions. What I like about it is that one can get more done and one is not forced to keep upgrading to different versions of the same tool, because the good GNU people make this stuff for the love of it. Believe me, I don’t mind paying for software that does a job, but I don’t want to be forced to change. Like I wrote, for a power tool, you don’t pull it out of the garage and find out that you need to pay money and read new instructions again ’cause it works differently as of the new fiscal year.

Also, you should learn English grammar, because I am responding to points that I’m guessing the meaning of somewhat.

its deeper yet than you express.. It began in 1789 when the US constitution was ratified.. That ratification quashed the then sitting American Government.(the articles of confederation government: it had 11 presidents; it hired G. Washington to be the general of that Army because he was the second richest man in American and an ex British Officer). If you really start reading the US Constitution you will discover it quashed democracy in America.

the paragraph from the Article above “Klon Kitchen, the Heritage Foundation’s senior research fellow for technology, said Facebook has the right to censor whomever it wants. “I think Facebook is a private company,” Kitchen stated. “[T]he Heritage Foundation is going to be very clear about a private company’s right to organize and conduct its business as it sees fit”. [Heritage Foundation defends Facebook’s ‘right’ to censor, will oppose regulation, by Allum Bokhari, May 3, 2018]” clearly states what the American Declaration of Independence was about.. Corporate control of government and monopoly endowed corporations that were scalping Americans of their profits and denying them a means to make a living. ” <sounds just like the words of those in British Parliament in London at the time.

I can think of no words that more clearly state that the corporations have reestablished the conditions that brought on the American Revolution. than those just quoted..

    Thanks for the article.

Trudeau was absolutely right about not bombing I$I$.

That he was a bit less than forthcoming in his reasoning should be excused by the fact that he seems not suicidal.

Once the Free West™ stopped financing I$I$, the need to bomb them swiftly disappeared – and I think Trudeau’s breaking ranks contributed to that very welcome development.

He is still furious that in the 1500s Spain had the audacity to hold on to one of its low country provinces when the English paid the Calvinists to rebel.

His teeny tiny Spanish province with the help of England did win its revolution. And Jilles is still so proud.

Google is a government supported and controlled social manipulation organization. The search results returned by google are clearly and obviously manipulated by google – which means that anyone referring to his phone for google-determined “facts” is a fool. The only real question left is to what extent it is now a foreign government (Israel) that is manipulating Americans.

  54. Only if the fight is always a reaction to provocation. However, most castles eventually fall. Defensive positions are never truly safe. The old phrase, “The best defense is a good offense” applies here just as it does in sport.

The question to ask by a Conservative is, “What, that I value, is worth conserving ?” Those who wish to conserve something should be able to define that which they wish to conserve. It should have some value. For example, Freedom of the Press. O.K. Bad example.

The relationship between those who wish to conserve and those who wish to change things is the relationship between predators and prey. Generally, those who wish to change things wish to change the ownership of money or other things of value from those who possess it to themselves. In exchange for nothing.

  56. Much is made of the fact that the GOP controls both houses and the presidency and yet can’t get anything done. This is just a hollow talking point. Trump ran against the GOP as much as against the Democrats. He was strongly opposed by the party establishment not only on personal grounds but on ideological grounds as well. His success illustrates the populist predicament: you can have the support of most of the country but if the elite opposes your agenda you will have a hard time legislating. Apart from finding ways to weaken the elite, the counter is to declare that the elite is trying to sabotage your presidency and take your case to the people, using roll-call votes to force opponents to go on record with their unpopular positions. Trump does not seem willing to take this route. Instead the erstwhile ‘tough guy’ seems willing to compromise his agenda in return for some modest successes and a sliver of respect from the elite. Some say he is playing 3D chess, but that is just a way of saying we don’t know whether or how he intends to make good on his campaign promises.
The “mainstream right” are nearly as opposed to Trump as the left. In fact, some progressive commentators such as Jimmy Dore make a point of defending Trump against the more absurd accusations of the mainstream Dems. This is another feature of populism and even nationalism, that they appeal to anti-establishment elements of both left and right.
As we think about furthering Trump’s MAGA agenda going forward, we need always to recall that it is unpopular with donors and hacks of both parties and even Trump himself might have only a nominal commitment to it. Our task is to find ways to tilt the balance of power between the elite and the “deplorables,” one way being to induce some political sophistication in the deplorables, so that they will detect and resist attempts by Trump to sell them out. Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson are doing great work in this regard, but we need more like them.
