I’ve been very busy the last couple of months working on a very large extension/integration of the website, and have now finally released the new code to the Live server, though I’m not quite ready to announce the new systems.

Although almost nothing I’ve been building relates to the parts of the system currently in use, given the extent of the changes, there’s a good chance that some unexpected “seepage” has generated new bugs in the website. So please notify me in the comments of any problems you’ve noticed.

Possibly a bug, or maybe just a time lag or propagation delay? I left this comment this morning, and it is still in moderation: http://www.unz.com/suggestion/suggestion-thread-for-forum-articles/#comment-2044582

Thank you very much, Mr. Unz.

  2. Hi Ron.

This applies to YouTube embeds in my comment history, not comments as they appear in the original threads:

    1) Some comments (that had been edited within the 5-minute window?) have attached code that reads [ " rel="no follow"> ]. This correlates with a smaller thumbnail and obliterates the YouTube video link.

    2) Videos with zero-plus start time markers (e.g. ?t=27s) have the start time stripped from the outbound link.

    Examples in my comment history:

Comment on August 7, 2017 at 12:45 am GMT has both issues.

Comment on August 3, 2017 at 6:30 pm GMT has the start time extension separated from the video link.

But overall, congrats on the increasing traffic Ron.

A curiosity; maybe not a bug, but a new feature?

I published a comment http://www.unz.com/tsaker/is-communism-really-dead/#comment-2045037 containing a Youtube video link, and I did not expect the video to expand, because I know that you set a limit on the number of posts that contain video links that are allowed to expand/embed those videos in a comment. I believe the limit, so far, has been that the first four comments containing video links in a comments thread have the video links expand/embed, but the following ones don’t.

I believe my comment was the fifth comment containing a Youtube video link in that particular comments thread, but still the video was expanded/embedded, but only as a hyperlinked thumbnail of the video, which then could be clicked and one would be taken to the Youtube website to watch the video there. One cannot watch it directly at the Unz Review. The first four expanded/embedded videos in that comments thread one can watch without having to leave the Unz Review. Here an example: http://www.unz.com/tsaker/is-communism-really-dead/#comment-2044642

I am going to re-post the link of the video I shared in my comment I linked to above to test if the video expands/embeds again as just a thumbnail that hyperlinks to Youtube or as a fully watchable embedded video here in this comments thread. If the video is watchable here in this comments thread this would probably mean that that curiosity that occurred in the other comments thread has to do with the set limit on video links that are allowed to expand, and potentially is a new commenting feature? If the video does not expand or just expands as a hyperlinked thumbnail this time again, there might be something uniquely different about this particular video link or there is some kind of very strange bug in the system?

    Here goes the test:

[Edit: The video seem to expand/embed normally this time, as you can see below.]

Yes, one small enhancement I added to the system was that although only the earliest YouTube links fully expand into watchable videos, the remainder now expand into Thumbnail images linked to the YouTube website. I decided to do that because such images are much "lighter" than full videos.

However, someone else noticed a possibly bug in the display of some YouTube links on the Commenting History page, so I'll try to fix that when I have a chance.

Thank you very much, Mr. Unz.

That is a very nice new enhancement, and I hope the bug noticed by the other commenter is fixable. I like that compromise. I know from your previous comments that you have mentioned the ``heaviness'' of Youtube video embeds several times before.

Slightly off-topic; I also like the new ``HOT!'' items section inspired by current events that features previous Unz Review pieces related to the event(s), etc., that I noticed pop up several times for certain special occasions over the last several weeks/months.

Thank you very much, again, and also congratulations from me on the increasing web traffic and the increasing, positive impact and influence the Unz Review has on public debate in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

P.s.: Typo in my above Edit; corrected: `` The video *seems* to expand/embed normally this time, as you can see below.''

Search seems to have a problem with Karlin’s blog.

0 resulsts when I search “all website content” for “wrong person”:

5 results when I search “Russian reaction blog”:

If I may make a suggestion, could some form of this thread always be linked to the front page?

    Keep up the good work!

I noticed another thing that does not seem to be functioning properly.

In Unz Review authors’ article archives http://www.unz.com/author/philip-giraldi/ on top of the page there is an option to “Show” article “Extracts” or “Headlines”, and that option seems to be functioning fine, but the next option “by” “Date”, “Length”, “Comments”, or “Last Comment” does not seem to work at all.

When one tries to search by “Comments”, for example, the order of the articles does not change, but remains the same.

I don’t know if these options were disabled on purpose, or maybe since these search options don’t seem to really fulfill a purpose, they could perhaps simply be removed?

I also noticed another thing, on this web page http://www.unz.com/columnists/ some Unz Review columnists like for example, Mr. James Thompson and JayMan, are missing or not featured on that web page.

If I counted correctly, 21 columnists are featured on that web page, including Peter Lee and Eamonn Fingleton whose columns seem to have been archived, but on the “ALL COLUMNISTS” list at the bottom of the front/home page I counted 27 names, including yours Mr. Unz and some retired/archived columns, e.g., Peter Frost, etc. Did you purposefully limit that web page’s featured columnists to 21, and/or has it just simply not been updated yet, since new contributors like Mr. Thompson were added to the team/roster?

    Thank you very much.

Fixed. Normally, the Columnist page excludes the "permanently retired" columnists, though since some of them go dormant for extended periods, the definition is a little fuzzy.

The Text Search module is complex and I haven’t looked at it closely in a couple of years. There’s something strange going on, but at least I think I’ve eliminated your particular sort of problem.

    @Triumph104/#10

Complaint: I have Anonymous on ignore. Whenever Anonymous embeds a Tweet but does not type a comment in the post, I see the Tweet.

    FIXED.

    @eah/#11

When I click on my moniker all approved/published comments do not appear in the list.

Locating and displaying all comments from a given commenter is very server-load intensive, so the queries to generate those pages are cached and only updated once or twice a day.

    /#13

that option seems to be functioning fine, but the next option “by” “Date”, “Length”, “Comments”, or “Last Comment” does not seem to work at all.

    FIXED.

I’ll try to see about fixing some of the remaining problems later today when I have some time.

That is what I figured. I have been aware of this situation for a while, but I thought now would be an opportune time to bring it to your attention, even though it is not technically/exactly a software bug.

One more micro bug; again, maybe this is just due to a propagation delay?; on Mr. Giraldi's latest article http://www.unz.com/pgiraldi/the-lobby-british-style/ in the ``Of Related Interest'' section Philip Weiss' featured article's -- titled ``Bill Making It a Federal Crime to Support BDS Sends Shockwaves Through Progressive Community'' -- thumbnail image seems to be broken/missing. The image/thumbnail still shows up in his articles archive, though: http://www.unz.com/author/philip-weiss/

I guess Ron wants to be fair to all controversial points of view. I can see a number of benefits to this, especially regarding the coming times when gov't or $PLC nerd-goons start gunning for unz.com. Believe me, this shit is coming. sbpdl.com has been off the air since just after Charlottesville. I don't think Paul Kersey just up and retired.

I agree that there are some true nutcases showcased here, with a prime example being this Godfree Roberts, a guy with no knowledge of history, who just wrote an article in praise of the butcher/tyrant Chairman Mao. What I like though, Wmna, is that the comment sections are pretty wide open for disagreement, with the exception of Paul Craig Roberts*. It's great to be able to get a word in here to these cntrl-left imbeciles, rather than accidentally read their screeds elsewhere and have all your replies get censored, right?
    .
    .

    * I am hoping this was part my doing (the fact the P.C. Roberts asked for no more commenting here on his articles). I think he is a great libertarian, but he had two completely asinine posts about Global Climate Disruption(TM), and I tore him a new one in the comments. I would be very proud of myself if this were the case!

Well, the stated purpose of this webzine is to provide convenient access to perspectives mostly excluded from the mainstream media. I'd hardly put pro-Free Market activists in that category.

This seems to be your first and only comment, so it sounds like you'll be much happier spending your time on the websites of National Review, the Heritage Foundation, or the Rush Limbaugh. Bye-bye...

Not a software bug, just a minor website aesthetics improvement suggestion.

In the “ALL CATEGORIES” section http://www.unz.com/categories/ there is a category bar titled “Articles”, just above the “History Articles” category bar, which has no articles underneath it, plus the link which ends in “arts” is a dead end, i.e., it leads to nowhere: http://www.unz.com/tcategory/arts/

Maybe remove it completely, or (re-)open an “Arts Articles” category, (again)?

  22. Ron, I’m glad you or someone deleted some of my testing of what I thought was a bug. It took me a while to think about trying stuff on my own site at which point I realized my tablet was somehow changed to displaying (I guess storing too) regular double-quotes as fancy double-quotes (don’t know the proper term for them). That was completely screwing up all links as the links would contain the ASCII values for that character.

I ran out of time to do much more as soon as I realized the quote deal. Again, sorry for doing the testing here, as I really thought there was something wrong with the code behind the editing window.

The minor stuff people are writing about sounds fine, but I am happy with the way things work on here.

Not a software bug, just a minor website aesthetics improvement suggestion.

In the ``ALL CATEGORIES'' section http://www.unz.com/categories/ there is a category bar titled ``Articles'', just above the ``History Articles'' category bar, which has no articles underneath it, plus the link which ends in ``arts'' is a dead end, i.e., it leads to nowhere: http://www.unz.com/tcategory/arts/

Maybe remove it completely, or (re-)open an ``Arts Articles'' category, (again)?

    Thank you very much.

One more micro bug; again, maybe this is just due to a propagation delay?; on Mr. Giraldi’s latest article http://www.unz.com/pgiraldi/the-lobby-british-style/ in the “Of Related Interest” section Philip Weiss’ featured article’s — titled “Bill Making It a Federal Crime to Support BDS Sends Shockwaves Through Progressive Community” — thumbnail image seems to be broken/missing.

    Fixed.

    Thank you, Mr. Unz.

The second problem seems to persist, and now underneath the ``Articles'' category bar there are three blog posts of Mr. Karlin's from September 2013 featured: http://www.unz.com/categories/

I also noticed that the hyperlink of the ``ALL CATEGORIES'' header at the bottom of the front/home page has been disabled, which more or less renders this web page http://www.unz.com/categories/ obsolete, since one can only access it now with a direct link. Perhaps just scrapping the entire web page is one or the best option in this case, now?

    Thank you very much.

I'm thinking of dropping coffe when visitng unz these days, what's next? A national socialist manifesto? Central banking 101 for marxists, marxoids and neomarsixsts?

Fuck Petras, and and the rest of the human garbage that get a voice there, but is there no line someone formerly committed to defense of private property willing to cross?

Well, the stated purpose of this webzine is to provide convenient access to perspectives mostly excluded from the mainstream media. I’d hardly put pro-Free Market activists in that category.

This seems to be your first and only comment, so it sounds like you’ll be much happier spending your time on the websites of National Review, the Heritage Foundation, or the Rush Limbaugh. Bye-bye…

    Reporting software bug:

The strange thing about this bug is that it does not seem to affect all commenters’ commenting histories/archives. It actually just seems to affect my commenting history/archive, as far as I can tell.

In my commenting history/archive the “Summary Cloud of Authors” and “Summary Cloud of Topics/Categories” search options are broken. The summary clouds don’t show up/load: http://www.unz.com/comments/all/?commenterfilter=FKA+Max

In your commenting history/archive, Mr. Unz, for example, they show up/load just fine and those search options seem to function without any problems: http://www.unz.com/comments/all/?commenterfilter=Ron+Unz

    Thank you very much.

I don't know if the ``ALL COMMENTERS'' page had the summary clouds (on purpose, due to the large number of comments?) disabled/empty before, or not?

It seems the problem was not just limited to my commenting history/archive page.

    Thank you very much.

  29. I just noticed this annoying bug/feature fifteen minutes ago: whenever I open a page on The Unz Review (or even click on something, like the “next new comment” button), it has a very high chance (not 100%, but close to it, like 80 or 90%) of stopping whatever audio had been playing in the background before. Since usually I read The Unz Review in my leisure time, and usually I listen to music while doing so, this is a most unwelcome development.

It is usually caused by sites with a lot of embedded multimedia content, which I hate because I rarely have any use for such content. I don’t need the music, and videos or podcasts are always very slow (I can read the same information much much quicker).

Is it possible to fix this problem? iPhone iOS 11.0.3

(I don’t even understand why the browser has to stop background music. Why can’t I override it to *always* give priority to my music? If a site has audio, it can just not play it. Why am I forced to play any audio without explicitly clicking on it?)

Unfortunately, I can't see what could be causing that new multimedia problem on your iPhone. The couple of months of software changes were loaded on the server a few days before your problem seems to have appeared, and offhand I don't see any changes that were made in the code over the last few months that could be relevant. Is there some chance it's due to some change at your end, perhaps with your software settings or the version of the iOS?

Possible. I upgraded from iOS 10 three or four days before I noticed the problem (and I think I noticed it immediately, as I wrote, basically the music is playing constantly), and Apple did screw up a number of other things with iOS 11 (even though I waited a couple bug fixes until 11.0.3), that is actually how I know when I updated. On one of the two browsers I use, Unz Review always comes up in Mobile mode. Nothing I do or can do resets the mode to my preferred Desktop — referring here to resetting the Version from Default (to which it always reverts) to Use Desktop. This behavior has been true since August ’17 & has not been observed on my other browser. I hesitate to delete all the cookies on the browser to fix one isolated problem.

That's a strange problem, and it seems to work properly on my own browser. As far as I can tell, the code in question doesn't seem to have changed since mid-July, though perhaps there was some change elsewhere that impacted it.

The particular cookie that saves those User Settings is called "UserSettings", so maybe if you're able to delete it, the problem will go away. Which browser works at your end, and which gives you the problems?

Did this happen on purpose?, because there is a tremendous Youtube video archive available at the Unz Review which cannot be accessed by readers and new visitors, who are not aware of this website feature and/or don’t have the direct link to it: https://www.unz.com/video/

Did you perhaps stop linking the video archive into the “Menu” due to the “heaviness” of the Youtube video embeds, or is this video archive a brand new Unz Review feature which I, accidentally, stumbled upon?

    Thank you very much.

Actually, as I mentioned above, I've been very busy the last couple of months on a major extension of the website. Since I've been preoccupied on this and had never announced the Video section, I decided to hide it away on the menu until I was finished with this other lengthy project, and could polish it up and officially release it. Now that I'm almost done with that other project, I'm hoping that will be quite soon.

    Stuck on Mobile ?

On one of the two browsers I use, Unz Review always comes up in Mobile mode. Nothing I do or can do resets the mode to my preferred Desktop — referring here to resetting the Version from Default (to which it always reverts) to Use Desktop. This behavior has been true since August '17 & has not been observed on my other browser. I hesitate to delete all the cookies on the browser to fix one isolated problem.

    Thanks!

That’s a strange problem, and it seems to work properly on my own browser. As far as I can tell, the code in question doesn’t seem to have changed since mid-July, though perhaps there was some change elsewhere that impacted it.

The particular cookie that saves those User Settings is called “UserSettings”, so maybe if you’re able to delete it, the problem will go away. Which browser works at your end, and which gives you the problems?

Apart from that pernicious ‘select text’ linkit from unz’s bizarreness presenting, I’ve got an important question. Is this a hardcore marxist site?

I’m thinking of dropping coffe when visitng unz these days, what’s next? A national socialist manifesto? Central banking 101 for marxists, marxoids and neomarsixsts?

Fuck Petras, and and the rest of the human garbage that get a voice there, but is there no line someone formerly committed to defense of private property willing to cross?

Well, the stated purpose of this webzine is to provide convenient access to perspectives mostly excluded from the mainstream media. I'd hardly put pro-Free Market activists in that category.

This seems to be your first and only comment, so it sounds like you'll be much happier spending your time on the websites of National Review, the Heritage Foundation, or the Rush Limbaugh. Bye-bye...

    R. Unz,

I was reading commentary on Giraldi’s America’s Jews article and I saw the UR referred to as an avowed anti-Semitic site. You haven’t avowed that have you?

    Hi, Ron.

One feature that I really enjoyed was having the ability to click on “Earlier Items” or “Later Items” at the bottom of all my archived comments pages (in addition to the top of each page). This greatly facilitated locating previous comments and was a real time saver. Not sure why this feature was removed. It would be nice to have it back.

Also, something else I noticed happening in a few articles is that when I would click on a word in a paragraph using my iPad the entire paragraph would turn green in colour and it appeared as though I was in some kind of programming/edit mode. Not sure if others experienced the same phenomenon.

    Well, that’s it for me.

    Hope this helps,

    Geo

The highlighting feature was something I’d added a few months back, mostly for HTML Books, and since it seems to annoy many people, once I have a chance, I might make it non-default otherwise. Unfortunately, right now I’m very busy finishing up a different project.
