The following graph shows extrapolated mean IQ by selected demographics from 2019 NAEP mathematics and reading results among eighth grade public school students. Estimates are computed by averaging mathematics and reading scores and then converting those to IQ scores, assuming a national average IQ of 96 and a standard deviation of 15. This does not take home-schooled or private school students into account:

Eighth grade girls don’t just outperform boys in reading. They also do marginally better than boys do in mathematics. The patriarchy works in mysterious ways.

    I assume you force the national standard deviation to be 15. Could you then report the standard deviations of the various races? Also, the way IQ was originally defined was that white IQ was set to 100 with a standard deviation of 15. So it may only be appropriate to force the white standard deviation to be 15 rather than the national standard deviation.

    One can never be certain about whether one has all the data or not, but the data I’ve seen from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth (NLSY) 1979 seems to indicate that the mean IQ for white men was 103.9 +/- 14.6 and that of white women 102.7 +/- 13.6. This slight deviation of standard deviation from both 15 and between men and women has always intrigued me. Perhaps I am not using the data properly. I have not seen the NLSY 1997 data, but norming across cohorts is tricky due to the Flynn Effect. Nevertheless, it would shock me that IQs of white 8th graders today are 3.5 points lower than in the cohort born around 1960 (my generation), which is contrary to the Flynn Effect.

  2. Thanks for putting in very solid work, AE. This makes much more sense than the last PISA (2015) report which showed white Americans outscoring Asian-Americans, a complete reversal of previous PISA editions. That exam has had a major methodological revision, which is why I was skeptical of it.

    These results re-confirm the old pattern and make the PISA results even more of an outlier.

    About the boy-girl issue, girls mature faster than boys, so this is normal. A 14 year old girl is comparable to 15-16 year old boy. There are clear differences in reading at age 15 but they disappear after age 20.

    At age 17 boys become better at mathematics and after age 20 year they become equal at reading. Same could be observed for many other scores.

    So when one looks for gender (or sometimes racial, there are reasons for that too) differences, it is not advisable to be looking at children, but at adults. In this light, NAEP data from 8th graders is probably underestimating racial differences too, since they are smaller among children than among adults.

It seemed obvious from looking at the chart that white racists are putting a stupidifying agent of some kind in the free lunches given to poor children of color, so I investigated and found that these students are being served tomato products containing citric acid, which apparently causes “retard spoilage”.

    It’s printed right there on the label!

  7. girls 3 points higher than boys is the most interesting result here. large amounts of evidence point to the adult difference being men about 4 points higher than girls. so something is happening at the grade school level, somewhat in line with the general train of thought that public education is becoming more female, that is to say being more oriented towards female traits.

    i’m not sure what the dropout level is like, this would certainly affect the numbers when the students are 18, but like AE says, testing students when they are 13 or 14 gets around that issue. if all the dumbest boys have dropped out by 18, and aren’t around for SAT or ACT, but most of the girls are still sticking it out, then that could explain some, of the observed 7 point swing between boys and girls when college age performance begins.

  8. the difference between the europeans continues to get larger. now it’s bigger than 10 points. this is creating a bifurcated population of people, one group who is around 104 to 105 versus another group around 97 or 98. that’s a 7 to 8 point difference – enough to be noticeable, even by the average person. we already have evidence from other sources that this divergence phenomenon is happening. where the trend is that the smartest europeans in America are slowly still getting smarter, maybe 1 point per generation, but the dumbest europeans are getting dumber faster, maybe 2 points per generation.

    this creates a complicated future. it’s not simple Idiocracy. it means that the smart fraction people have a capability and output that is still slowly going up, but there is a growing underclass of people expanding at a faster rate.

    no, there aren’t enough teenage jewish people in America to affect the numbers much. these NAEP numbers are a pretty good reading of just the europeans. if anything, the numbers might be 1 point lower, due to latin americans and MENA people being put into the same category. there’s a lot more of them than jewish teenagers.

    per my 3/5/7 rule of intelligence: 3 points is the first meaningful detectable difference on tests. 5 points is the first noticeable difference to careful observers of national capability and output. 7 points is the first noticeable difference to average observers who visit an area. a good rule of thumb for nations in europe, and now the trend in America.

  9. considering that the smartest europeans have largely abandoned the public school districts in certain cities, the smart fraction europeans might be higher than 104 or 105 now. i’m not sure there is any way to calculate or know these numbers. possibly by grabbing published ACT or SAT numbers. i know Pennsylvania had that last year. the private school students were indeed reporting test scores that translated to wechsler 115 to 125 on average, and these are not small 400 person high schools, but 1200 person high schools.

    for now we can only know that in such bleak school districts, the europeans trapped there are like the people trapped in West Virginia – the less capable ones would couldn’t escape. even in West Virginia, the escape continues – test scores continue to go down there 1 point per decade.

    it’s really terrible that Washington DC is attracting so many smart people. millions of europeans working HARD, every day, to make sure that America ends. it’s idiotic nonsense. all those people growing up to vote 90% democrat. what total garbage. the biggest misuse of brainpower in the history of the world.

    The primary reason for the decline of white IQ in the US is that “white” refers to a different population today than it did in the past.

    Until the beginning of the 20th century, the white population in the US was overwhelmingly Northwestern European. Since then, the immigration of non-NW Euro whites and intra-white mixing between NW Euros and non-NW Euro whites has resulted in a white population in the US today that is much less NW Euro than it used to be, lowering the IQ level of the “white” category in the US.

    Girls typically do better than boys at the 8th grade level. This isn’t something new or surprising. They mature faster and that helps for the lower level academic work. Just about every purported example of girls having this edge comes from looking at this age range. Boys gain the advantage in the late teen early 20’s age.

    This graphic has some utility for gaps that are large so don’t change proportionally when intelligence crystallizes later in life. But for something like gender differences, it’s real. It’s also not that big of deal either because the genders’ performance is so close to each other anyway.

    Since girls study more than boys, more girls will reach the point of diminishing returns for studying than boys. This could mean that girls’ scores on tests of educational achievement correlate more highly with IQ than boys’ scores, since it’s reducing non-IQ variance.

    Of course maybe that is cancelled out by other factors. Test anxiety may be higher for girls, adding noise. Smaller variance in IQ for girls should cause other factors to matter relatively more. Of course, if there is also smaller variance in personality for girls that may cancel out.

    That measely 23% reduction in a massive gap, if it is real, has come at great cost — and for what purpose? So that you and they can feel a little less unhappy about the real, average intelligences of human races?

    Shall we spend (borrow) a few more $Trillion so that even more millions of illiterate, innumerate, unmarried black women can produce even more free lunch recipients?

    BTW, as soon as you take away our massive economic and social support, that magic 23% reduction will disappear.

    At 8th grade my performance on such tests would have been very unremarkable.
    On the GRE (taken at age 23) my performance suggests I was easily one of the smartest kids in my fairly large suburban H.S. graduating class.

    Large cohort testing of teenagers reveals something, but what it doesn’t reveal is probably larger.

    “Smart people” all now seek “self-actualization,” which under today’s dominant ersatz religion translates to “saving the world.”

    Smart people, like stupid people, largely arrive at their beliefs by absorbing the beliefs of their perceived peer group. Smart people are also better at providing rationalizations for the stupid shit their peers appear to believe.

    We today exist amidst industrial-scale rationalizations for collective stupidity, but hey–Brawndo has electrolytes.

    PS: The most vocal members of an on-line “High IQ” society I accidentally joined were all frothing-at-the-mouth leftists. These are folks with IQ’s 140+, i.e., 1-in-500 or rarer in intelligence as measured by IQ tests or accepted surrogates (in other words, 10 times more selective than MENSA.) As described in Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow, the cognitive processes that light up on IQ tests appear to subdivide into “algorithmic” cognition and “rational” cognition, AKA common sense. A whole lot of people who test very well have a poor ability to notice when their own thinking is bat-shit crazy.

    Unfortunately NAEP doesn’t provide results broken out by both race and sex. I’m assuming 1 SD = 15 IQ points, but I’m using the SDs reported by NAEP for all students who took the test. The granular data might be there to break out SDs by sub-group, but to be candid I don’t think I can justify the opportunity cost of trying to go and calculate them for differences that I assume will end up being pretty marginal.
